<< Because you are only 5 frames away from triple digit frames >>

Woohoo! Triple digit frames! I think I would break down in tears if I could ever reach that holy grail. LOL. :)

"There's a point of diminishing returns though. There is hardly any noticeable difference between 800, 900, 1000 speeds. You get a few ,more fps in a game that already gets 80-100 fps? Big deal. It's not going to help your web browsing either. Heh. Most people have no real need or use for 900 or 1000 mhz. There is no reason to dump a celeron system for a duron. If you need a new system duron is the better choice but the celeron does just fine. I had a BX motherboard on my second system. Put a celeron 633 in there and it's overclocking at 950 mhz. Way more performance than I."

This is true for most people regarding performance. I wouldn't need a cable modem or a GEforce2 GTS or 1 gig processor if it wasn't for gaming. Don't tell the wife that though. BTW, there is a clear difference between 100 fps and 160 fps to a hardcore gamer. Not that I am so hardcore by any means, just an observation from a lamer gamer. My celeron 533 oc'ed to 800 ran fine and I probably would not have purchased a new machine except for the fact that someone wanted to buy the celeron from me. :)

As for why would I need more than 100 fps? It's all about headroom. Sure your time demos will tell you that you just ran 100 fps but when you are really playing in a game you will notice much slow downs due to open areas or lots of crossfire etc... Having the 60 frame headroom will help tremendously when you actually need the frames.

"btw, how do i get over 100 fps in quake3? i have only been able to get 95ish...
i have a duron600 @ 897 / 256 pc133 / 3dfx 3000 agp (this might be the cause) "

Yes, I have a duron at 900 running a voodoo3 2000. It really can't keep up with my Geforce2. I would suggest selling the voodoo and getting a geforce2 mx. I ran my timedemos at 800 by 600 32 bit color. Pretty quake is kinda nice ;)

Shonuff, you don't NEED a 1 gig processor or the Geforce 2 GTS for gaming. You can play games just as enjoyably with lesser hardware. You have them because you WANT them, not because you need them. Now, the cable modem is another story. You probably do need that.

I don't buy into this argument that the "hardcore" gamer needs 160 fps instead of 100 fps. 100 fps in Q3 is plenty. 160 fps is all about doing it for the fun of it, bragging rights, and "my fps is bigger than your fps" rather than any increase in the playability of the game.

I would have to disagree with you on that but that's what discussion forums are for. BTW... The durons are a fair deal. Just so that we are still on that particular topic. Next time you are playing rocket arena on a 26 player server. Jump into the middle of a fire fight and you will know what I mean. Or look at the waterfall on this one clan arena map and you will see. Frames will drop to like 40 or 50 frames if I were running 100 fps. This is from past experience. Have you tried playing with a machine that will get you 150+ frames? How do you know it doesn't help? Sure it may be bragging rights for some, but for me personally is playability. I value my hard earned money and just wouldn't drop 500 bucks on a geforce ultra just to brag about it. If you checked my signature you will see that I do not brag about what I have and what I am running. I am just posting this because I had a positive experience with some Duron purchases. It may help those who are on the border line of a purchase. Funny thing about all of this is that you mentioned cable modem being a must purchase. Well, that is what is holding me back from a happy gaming experience. Comcast @ home in my area has been so bad that I can actually play better off my 26.4 modem. I ping over 400+ around 9 pm. JMHO! No bragging rights needed. There will always be someone that is badder. Ask Thresh or Makaveli if they need the frame rate. Those guys are talking a required 200 to 300 fps for competition. Do you think they know what they are talking about? Especially since Thresh is co-founder of a hardware site: www.firingsquad.com

Oh well, everyone has their own opinion and that was mine.

Remember that if you want to what for Monday to order(free shipping) then put the item in your basket because Buy.com loves to raise prices and usually if the item was placed in your basket it will keep the old price. Worked for a different deal for me.
