Why do nicer hotels like the Ritz and Four Seasons always charge for the internet? This annoys me and I can't be the only one. Cheaper places like Motel 6, Days Inn, and Best Western offer free internet. Isn't internet a basic necessity now? It should be offered free like the daily newspaper.

Then why don't they nickel and dime you for the daily newspaper, slippers, or bath robe? Or add it to the room fee so I don't see it. Things like $5 for 8oz soda doesn't bother me. But internet should be complimentary like newspapers and TV.

why do they charge $25 a day for parking in their garage? Because they can.

Do you think most business people can expense stuff like that? They throw stuff like that in because it is extremely cheap to do so and gives the appearance that you're getting a great deal and treated well.

Because it's hard to expense a newspaper, slippers, or a bathrobe.

See, that doesn't bother me. I expect to have to pay to park especially in a busy area. But internet is basic need now like free CNN, ESPN, and HBO. This isn't 90s or even 2000 anymore.
 
I tether my phone. I also park in a parking garage (there's usually one within a block or two in major cities) to avoid price gouging, then I head to a carry-out and stock up on drinks/snacks. Saves a good $200 for a weekend stay in those places.

Oh I tethering all my devices to my phone. I paid $34/night for parking, ordered room service, and drank couple of those $5 8oz sodas and $6 8oz water. I dont have any problem with that. But there's no way I'm paying $18/day for internet. It's less about the money than the principle.

this. I'd always stay at the Hilton or Ritz in downtown Manhattan, $500+/night, and it's like $15/night for internet. It's highway robbery, but they know people on a business trip will pay it (or, more accurately, their clients will pay).

The internet always sucks too and is super slow.

I don't stay at places that charge for internet.
I've noticed that some hotels in San Diego and Los Angeles charge to park.
 
Well, the Hilton in NY gives you free WiFi. I was very surprised. However, that is not the majority. more upscale hotels have people pay because lots of the clients are business people who have everything done on a company dime. You think those people staying care if the company has to pay $15 extra?

I travel for business but don't stay at those hotels. My employer shouldn't have to pay extra for internet.

I get a flat rate depending on where I stay.
Most places, it's $84.
LA/San Diego, $110
Bay Area, $140

I just booked rooms in LA and I had trouble finding a hotel that would take $110.

So you have no problem paying $5 or $6 for a drink you can walk to the 7-11 next door and get a 20 oz version for $1.50 because of the "principle"? How about the principle of getting ripped off, which is what they're doing to you when they gouge you at a mini-bar?

I remember when I was in Seoul on business, they wanted to charge me $6 for a can of Diet Coke and I almost flipped, but I didn't have much of a choice since I was in freaking Korea. I'd never pay that much for a can of Coke here.

My current employer has a nasty habit of putting us in more expensive hotels where the internet isn't free. One year I just tethered to my Blackberry because I refused to pay, but in other years, I didn't have a choice.

I'd pocket the money, and stay in a van :^D WalMart lets to lot camp free ;^)
