Hot!!! Xircom PortStation USB 7 Port Hub Module $4.99

"Requires End Caps or Starter Kit!"

Good find anyway. The Assessories and Kits look really nice and compact.

I would say you need the starter kit at $19.00 if you want external power. I'm not sure if the power supply is included though, the more info link did not work for me.

Is this intended for laptops or something? What's the benefit of this PortStation thingee. I don't get it. Not trying to threadcrap here, I just don't understand. It looks like it might be neat if I could figure out what it was for. 🙂

That info link on the Starter Kit doesn't work for me either, BTW.

Acme

Acme, this is for people like me who run out of USB ports on their computer. My computer only has 2, and I have about 4-5 USB devices. It just expands them.

does anybody know how to use those extra usb ports that comes with motherboards?
just plug it in the designated motherboard headers, or is there something else?
my motherboard could have 4 usb ports if i it will work. i tried but it doesn't detect new devices 🙁

My buddy bought one of those slot covers with 2 add-on USB port on it... and if you plug the cables into the motherboard headers correctly, they work just fine. I don't think he had to do anything special. And the nice thing about that is that it's cheap . Bad thing is it takes up a slot on your case, which for me is ok, but may be bad for others..... -TAL

Dammit!! I just spent $50 on a D-Link USB hub because I wanted PS/2 to USB connectivity... and an additional $30 on a dual-port PS/2-to-USB converter so I could have even more PS/2 ports available. Special application.

Grrrrr. Oh well. The D-Link hub also has an RS-232 port I needed, which doesn't seem to be available for this cool PortStation stuff.

By the way, these appear to be phenomenal prices. This stuff is discontinued (probably dropped as a result of Xircom's acquisition by Intel) and originally went for literally hundreds of dollars. Very overpriced then, but pretty damned reasonable now.

Yeah, now that USB 2.0 is out these things are going to be dropping in price. I really don't need this, but if multiport USB 2 hubs come out this cheap I'd jump on it. If you've got a lot of other peripherals right now, this is a nice deal.

dongky
you need to wire the usb connection to match the motherboard connection. the usb header pinouts vary from board to board. The Intel specs (like on the bp810) are quite different from the via based shuttle and soyo boards (which work with standard usb pinouts easily btw).
