It worked for me. The lady at the Customer Service counter (nice lady) interrupted me as I was bringing up the price match info. "Oh yeah, I know. $149. I've been doing this all day..."

This was in Houston. Went from Microcenter to pick up the flyer, to CompUSA to buy the drive (I really didn't expect it to work). That was Thursday. Friday afternoon, a coworker went to try it at the same store, but the manager was on to it.

Oh well. Maybe other CompUSAs in Houston will work.

:D

Yes I know I dont have a Microcenter in Wisconsin but I had to try anyways. I first called the order number and tried to talk to the rep. Rep said its ultimately up to the store manager. So I figured since the stores in IL were out for Compusa. I fill the story that I drove up from Chicago to get the pricematch since it was the only store in the area that had them in stock. Manager ultimately refused and said that he wouldnt even pricematch that if it was the store next door as he will not allow the store to lose money. We then proceeded to have a run around. At one point he said he would give it to me but wouldnt subtract the difference but give it to me as a store credit. Also made the statement that he didnt have the stock on hand to do the deal. Gee 10 in stock. More than plenty. I think he realized what he said and switched sayings really quick. Since I was going to buy 3 or 4 of them. He then said that his cost was $289. And that he still wont allow to lose money. I replied that well you are already losing money since your selling them for $229. As with the corporate offices and the manager they couldnt give me a clear info on what they would or wouldnt pricematch. So I went down like a flame of glory. Its all ok. Im sending cash to a buddy in Ohio to pick them up for me. And Im making a trip to Chicago since they got them in stock later today.

I really find it hard to believe that this was a misprint in the ad. If it truly is then they need to fire their entire advertising department on the grounds of gross incompetence. Before everyone starts jumping all over me I'll explain. Yes on page 3 of the ad it does have the picture of the 2mb cache box and just a little line stating "8mb cache" that I can see as a misprint. However on page 25 of the ad they have the same drive for the same price and there is a small paragraph giving the specs.

"WD Caviar Special Edition 7200RPM EIDE hard drive delivers data to users faster than any desktop hard drive has before. Perfect for high-performance applications like games, digital video editing, and file server applications"

The last time I checked, Western Digital only has one Special Edition EIDE drive and that is the 8mb cache drive. In my opinion this is a case of bait and switch if they renege on the price at this point. It is posted twice in the same ad. This is just my two cents though, I could be wrong.

Rebate form clearly states limit of ONE rebate per name/address/family or some such.

I went to CompUSA in Woodland Hills California and totally didn't expect this to work. I had no idea if there were any MicroCenters nearby. I had no ad. I knew there was a Microcenter in Fountain Valley some 70 miles away. Told the CSR I wanted to Pricematch Microcenter and said I left the ad at work. He called information to get the number of a local store, but there were none listed in San Fernado Valley, so he asked for Fountain Valley and called them! They verified it. Manager apporoved. I bought two of them! Hell of a dealio! Thanks!

I had to go return the one I had already bought from Fry's!

didn't know they had a store in fountain valley tho....
i just checked microcenter's website and the link they had for the drive is indeed the BB version 2MB cache...not the 8MB cache...but if this all works out...great for all of the people who got it...

Heh, so I became a member just to reply on this thread.

I was able to get the HD two days ago. I did what other people recommended, going to get the flyer, bringing it to CompUSA, and then bargaining. So here's how it went:

Standing in line, heart racing cuz I know it's supposed to be a fluke deal.
"Next please?" - some overweight guy named Dennis, whose tag says "Front End Service Coordinator" or something whacked like that.

There's a nice big poster next to me that says "Lowest Price Guaranteed." So banking off of that I begin (nervously stumbling over my words), "... so... you... have low price .... match.... guarantee, right? ... was wondering if you.... pricematch... this..." Handed the flyer over, pointed to the ad. (I felt and sounded so stupid.. =P)

Good 'ol Dennis mumbles, "lemme see here..." Turns around to store system computer, checks it turns around and says, "uh, I can only sell it to you for our base price ($229)."

(AH-HA! This is when I knew he was lying out of his ass... trying to lie to me cuz I sound stupid... hrmph)
"But, you guys have low price guaranteed... what're you trying to pull?"

"Uh, there are some restrictions that apply..." (and he points at the sign which is partially blocked by another sign...) "oh, hold on..." lumbers around the counter, moves the other sign and points to the bottom that reads "(Some restrictions apply...." I'm thinking (riiiiiiight).

"So.. what's the restriction?"
"I can't sell it to you lower than base price?"
"Is this written?"
"No."
"Then how do you know?"
"It just is"
"Are you sure? Cuz I've bought other things from CompUSA over the phone and they pricematched no matter what..."
".. uh... yeah..."
haha... (by this time I got my 'cool' back) so I just smile and read the next part of that nice little line he so graciously pointed out to me "... See manager for details.)" "Dennis, are you a manager?"
"I'm a manager..."
chuckling, "nononono.. are you the manager."
"... no.. but..."
"May I see/talk to the manager?"
".. yeah.. hold on..."
goes back behind the counter (where he belongs) tries to stall saying... "... but it's so cheap..." and I smile saying, "yeah... that's why I'm here." So good 'ol Dennis calls the manager, Chris.

Chris comes up looks at me and I smile at him, and he goes, "May I help you?"
"Yes I was wondering if you pricematch." (show him the flyer)
Quickly glances at the ad and responds, "Yes, just have our man, Dennis, call up the local retailer and if it's in stock then we'll pricematch."
I smile REAL big, shake his hand, "Thank you so much."

back to Dennis, calls up Microcenter (where I'm hoping he doesn't ask about the cache details)... and I'm golden. The BIGGEST reason for success is I didn't mention the rebate, and it wasn't even posted ON or NEAR the Harddrive sections.

Rings up about $160, and I go home, print up the rebate, fill it out, chop a big whole in my harddrive box, mail in the stuff (let's just hope that part comes back. =P)

This was all in Cleveland, OH area. Unfortunately, my suitemates went back (who are FOBs (and I love FOBs by the way)...(Fresh Off the Boat = Asians who may speak 'okay' English, but not born in Canada/States)) try their bargaining skills and the manager gets all pissed and was like, "No, I'm not going to do this. I'm not going to sell this to you." LOL!
they go, "But but but but... our friend just came in the other day and got it..."
"no! He shouldn't have done that... our price is cheaper after rebate" (dumb suitemates obviously must have mentioned the rebate and they pretty much tell the manager that they want to get the harddrive for $60... oh my gosh)

(heh, the best part was the manager didn't even bother looking at what it was I wanted to get and for how much). Poor suitemates.

hahaha... man, I love Anandtech, don't you? =D

I was in Microcenter yesterday in Columbus Ohio and there was a sign above both the 2mb and 8mb drives stating there was a pricing error in the ad.

Oh what a difference a shift change makes. Went to the store I was first rejected at on Friday and the previous manager who argued about the rebate in conjuction with pm wasn't there. So it was easy as; "I'll just call Microcenter and confirm they have them in stock" and I had myself a SECOND 120GB drive for 161! Now I just have to let my dad know that the rebate he'll be getting at his office is really for me :)
I think 420GB of storage on one system is enough for this seasons various tv caps :)

Not that I'm condoning this practice, but CompUSA is starting to stink. Why not buy the drive @ CompUSA, grab the rebate certificate, make a copy of the receipt and then return the drive without opening it, so you're not responsible for any restocking fees. Then, go to your Micro-Center and buy the drive for $149.00. Send in the UPC label, CompUSA receipt and CompUSA rebate certificate. 2 can play at their "games".

This is one hell of a pricing error. To have it in an ad once with the wrong cache would be one thing. I can understand typing 2 instead of 8. But to have it in the ad again for the same price and to refer to the drive as a Special Edition drive is just gross incompetence. Both are the same price in the ad as well. This is beginning to look like the Best Buy Visiontek scandal all over again.

Because you need the UPC from the 8 mb cache "Special Edition" hdd to qualify for the CUSA rebate.

For the sake... I know it's over today. I just wonder anyone got it work in Orange County, CA?

I drove to Mission Veijo CompUSA store... the manager is TOO smart. Failed... the cashier called Micro Center and i thought I have it... but the manager then went online to check against the SKU#... god... I was so close to snaping the deal.

Then I drove to Fountain Valley CompUSA. The cashier said "we don't match with micro center, only best buy, blah blah blah"... even they do PM... they already realized it's a price-misprint on Microcenter Ads. Maybe someone did this trick to that store already...

Last, I didn't drive to there. I called Anahiem CompUSA, asked if they PM ... they say no PM microcenter... so i just don't bother to go and head home sadly.................

=(

Am I just out of luck or what?!

I got that same thing at the Anaheim store as well... They said they only price match at certain places... which is BS! CompUSA?s Retail Store Low Price Guarantee. So i made a big stink in talking with the store manager "Percila" about it because the only reason she gave me was that Micro Center was not a store they Price Match with. So I went home checked out the policy online and called back to read it to her (I had also called 1-800-COMP-USA and they were surprised that a manager would say they only PM at certain stores). So she took my info and said she would talk to another store manager Sam Shinda first and call me back. She calls me back and says they don't do that Hard drive deal cuz it is not the same one (Which is fine). But i ask here again... why is it that she is changing her stance on the PM policy with Micro Center? She will contact there corporate HQ and get back to me on Monday. I plan to also call there corporate HQ in Texas on Monday (1-972-982-4000) and ask them about her. For a manager to not be knowledgeable as to how the stores (and corporate) policies work is very sad.

Good going! That's exactly what you need to do. Just keep handling their objections and they will cave because it's not their policy. They just tell you something and hope that you'll say, "ok" and quietly leave the store.

You can get this from BestBuy store for $29.00 after $120 BestBuy rebate and price match with Microcenter store.

Or buy it from OfficeMax online for $49 after $100 OM rebate (expires 9/21) and price match with Microcenter with your Amex Gold card.

I know this is a hot deal but Comp USA is the most miserable place Ive ever shopped at. I wouldnt even go there if they wanted to give me the drive for free. Ive had some really bad experiences there. Sorry, just had to say that.

No this deal is now DEAD. For rebate to apply, it had to have been purchased by 9-7-02. Sorry.
