My brother bought one of these a few months ago, It's good quality, and seems to be as versatile as the bowflex. So far he loves and it seems well worth the cash, which is considerably less than the Bowflex.

**edit** forgot to mention that the belt you get with it is crap, it broke the first time he used it, but that seems to be the only week spot.

I clicked this thread thinking "wow walmart sells crossbows?" Imagine my disappointment.

Anyway, I haven't heard the greatest thing about these types of machines..bowflex in particular. The problem is more with the type of exercise than the specific product. But lets here some experiences.

Are there different types of crossbows?

The one on sale for $60 off this week at sears is more expensive but has a lat attachment and extra lat bar:

linky

The one at walmart is cheaper but it looks like you get less

linky

I don't know how legit it is (there are so many "review" sites just trying to make money off referals) but here are some users experiences:

Linky

Looking around for alternatives I found this:

Body By Jake PC-875 Power Cage with Pec Deck for $129 at sports authority
linky

Combine that lat/pec/squatrack machine, a $50 cast iron weight set, a $100 bench and you can probably do just about any exercise plus save a few bucks.

If it only didn't have that silly JAKE in big letters and look like it would fall over if you sneezee.....

Same here. Thought I was going to be able to get medieval on someone with my new bow:)!

O'k I was also suckered into the crossbow reference, I should have read the word Weider, since I do know they make workout equipment.

So what's better for about that price?

I have a bowflex, which is about the same thing and it was a waste of money. If these things were that good then people who use weight training as a supplement for playing sports or people just looking to shape up their bodies would have these all over the world.

Free weights and exercise machines you find in gyms defiently feel different and more effective. The level of resistance on the bowflex and crossbow is different at different points. The least resistance occurs when you start and the most resitance occurs when you come to the end of the range of motion.

If you try doing you max on an exercise such as the benchbress you will find the machine to be very unstable and shakey. The amount of weight for the leg press isnt sufficient for most people. BTW I am a track runner 130lb 5'8 and i can do all the weight easily.

Half the exercises aren't as effective as their stand alone machine/free weight counterparts. You can't do a standard benchpress or an effective lat pulldown without buying the attachment.

Conclusion: Instead of wasting money on this by a multifunction bench press and some dumbbells. For serious people, the gym is the best option and it always will be because of the variety of exercises you can do.

PS: The total gym is also BS. Without added weights it feels like nothing.

Ok just wanted to update everyone....I called Sports Authority and got them to pricematch to walmart (since there's no 15% off coupon anymore) and the total came to $566.62 shipped....not bad compared to $599.99 plus $94 shipping regularly....

I must contradict the "wasting money" comment.

I also have a Bowflex, and I'm happy with it -- I gives me a pretty good workout. Of course, it's not as good as a WHOLE GYM full of free weights, but who has the budget or space for that? For most people it's not too limiting with "only" 410 lbs of resistance. If you are having trouble with it being too light, there are workarounds...like for leg press, use one leg at a time! Mltsao, I bet money you can't "stack" the 410 with one leg!! At first, some exercises like "bench press" felt shaky, but I realized that as I worked with it more, my stabilizing muscles became more effective, and now it's not shaky AT ALL. IMO, NOT a waste of money at all. CONCLUSION: If something allows you to work out regularly vs. not, it's a GOOD INVESTMENT.

EvilTwin, I completely agree with you. I've worked out for about 6 years and not too long ago my friend got a bowflex. Well it is "shakey" when you do certain exercises it isn't because the bowflex or crossbow are poorly made, rather your stabalizar muscles are underdeveloped compared to your core muscles (pecs, triceps, etc. ) You have to do less weight to do it correctly, but it works hella good. These are great machines for great prices, unless you have enough money to buy your own gym, or rather go get a membership.

I went through this a couple of years ago when I got into weight training pretty religously. My opinion (take it for what it's worth):

I looked at the Bowflex. Even used one at a local 'play it again sports'. Didn't like it. Resistance wasn't consistent, and motion was very jerky trying to use heavy resistance (benching 150 for example). I suspect the crossbow is the same but haven't looked at it.

My advise is to buy a set of Powerblock dumbells (adjustable in weight up to 110lbs per hand, awesome) and a good bench. takes up less room than a bowflex, costs a fraction, and you can do just about the same number of exercises. The only thing you'll be lacking in is the leg exercises.

So, we shouldn't work our legs then? ;-) It cracks me up to see some dude at the gym that thinks he's cool 'cause he can bench a zillion pounds, but has calf muscles like a 10 year old girl...

Dumbbells are great for many things, but kinda impossible to do lat pulls or any leg exercise. Plus, 110lbs per hand is not enough for some exercises! FWIW, I'd like to have some of those for supplemental exercises, but they're not an adequate replacement for a multi-function home gym.

Another HUGE bonus with this type of machine: NO SPOTTER REQUIRED. Don't try that with free weights!

Shows up as $463 for me.
BTW i use a bowflex system and i think it works well given the fact that i can do it at home and importantly at the time i choose.
I am sure serious weight trainers will thumb it down as not being as effective as visiting the gym and they are probably right. The point is that i am not interested
in running for Mr Universe anytime soon and and the bowflex allows me to be in decent shape.

I'm just starting out but I get a pretty good workout of the legs using dumbbells. Lunges, squats deadlifts, calf raises, leg curls etc, but as the weights get higher the dumbbels become dificult for the squats.

This guy is doing good with a set of dumbbells, a weight bench and a weight set:

Linky to john's site, he's posted in OT before

"My weight training equipment consists of a bench with butterfly and leg attachments, a barbell and a complete set of hex dumbbells (5-70 pounds in 5-pound increments). "

The thing I like about the dumbbells is you can buy them on the installment plan. It's great to "outgrow" your weights and go shopping for new ones every couple of weeks.

Before running out and buying a $557 coat rack pay $14 on something like this:

Linky to home workout bible

Or this $13 on something like this:

Linky to Home Body Building

I nice alternative to the powerblock are probell's

linky but I'm getting spoiled by my hex dumbbels as I hate changing things mid workout.
