Hot weather - the enemy of distributed computing

I've dropped down from five threads to three threads (i7-860 CPU) which is about 37.5% according to the BOINC software.

I've had to drop the thread count, after it got hot (78F) in the NE region. It was over 95F in my room that night. When the PrimeGrid challenge is over, I'll stop folding for a until late-fall or until the next PrimeGrid challenge comes along.

I caved in and bought an AC unit for my room. Life is now better. Only need to run the AC for 2-4 hours a day, so that isn't horribly expensive.

Good thing all my computers run in the basement with water or I would start to worry now that temps are getting in the high 80s, low 90s around here.

Well, I have started back up after moving. All my rigs are in the basement and it is very cool down here. The Girlfriend calls it the "Man Cave" It's unfinished for the most part. there is a room however, and that is where my computers are. Has AC coming into it so all is good. Much better than where they were at the other house🙂

Had to shut down my GPU rig (Cruncher 1) finally. Getting too toasty. Only computer still going is my i7 970.

Our office AC was turned down over the weekend, when I got to work this morning I had a bsod staring at me. However, I just cranked the AC lower and restarted!

I'm loving my new basement apartment, temps were lower even without the AC on and with the windows closed. 🙂

I might be stopping DC, I don't quite know at this point. Not quite because of temps, but because of electricity. I pay $0.15 per KWh, kinda pricy. My electric bill last month was $95.

Was thinking of replacing my desktop Q9300 / GTX460 rig, with a low-power Zacate rig.

I haven't put my desktop rig to a KAW yet, but I'm guesstimating it runs around 250W under load (CPU + GPU combined). The Zacate would run around 40W under full load.

Plus, the Zacate can watch 1080P video just fine, and web browse just fine too. Dunno about video transcoding, that might be a bit slow on something like that.

Well - I am having to shut down two machines. I will be crunching the last WUs for WGU, only crunch those at night until finished and then shut down. 🙁

i'm in Sarasota, FL. however, i live in an igloo...well not really, but i just can't stand it when my condo gets much above ~70&#176;F, so i always have the A/C on. on that note, i suspect my productivity should be approx. the same year 'round.

Cool, I have family in Palmetto, Bradenton, Cortez, and Tampa, been to Sarasota quite a few times. Do you have one of those FPL controlled A/C units?

well hello Sarasotan...I live there too.
I dislike A/C, or the heater, so I try to avoid these when possible.

Must be rough, especially with the humidity. Heater is easier to avoid using.

while i do make my electric bill check out to FPL, they do not control my A/C usage. fortunately i live in a fairly small condo (~1400 sq. ft.) and have a brand new A/C unit, so it takes no time to cool off my living space. even with the thermostat set to 73&#176;F, the actual ambient temp of the condo is closer to 70&#176;F...

...and yes, i rarely have to turn on the heat in the winter time b/c my main crunching rig doubles as a space heater LOL...

yup the heater is quite easy to avoid...the a/c not so much.

Thanks to rain pretty much everyday, things have cooled down quite a bit here. Decided to take advantage of this period and fire the GPU rig back up!

Did take notice of this... Good to see you taking advantage of the cooler temps ZipSpeed.:thumbsup:

I, so far have a very cool basement, with somewhat cool temps here in the great state of Minnesota, where I have my farm set up at. By far, the best place I have had to run my Rigs at full speed. I still have 2 other Pc's I can run but I have to do some mods to them first 🙂

My wife and I are looking to buy a house within the year so it will be nice being able to move my computers into the basement. Things get way too toasty in an apartment condo when there's 3 computers running full blast!

Got to love them though, It does cool it down a bit. It's the lightning thats the scary part. Especially when you have everything up and running. That is when I know it is time to shut things down until it passes🙂

Yeah, Last night I did shut down about half hour ahead. The storm was intensive enough for warnings to be issued.
