Ugh. Yesterday, I called the local BB (Springfield, MO). The worker I got on the phone said he'd go check the price, and set the phone on the counter. 20 minutes later, still no price. At least I got to listen to a worker trying to sell a printer. Finally yelled as loud as I could 'You could at least put me on hold!' and hung up. Bet the customer got a laugh :D
Later, I had someone call for me, they said none in stock, $179.99. Today, I went in. No shelf tag, none in stock. I printed out the tag showing $79.99, took it to CC. At CC, shelf price of $179.99, $100 MIR. Wouldn't you know it, the worker has to call BB. After being on hold for 15 minutes, she has the manager look it up on BB's website. $179.99. After 10 more minutes, she got a price check at BB, $159.99. By then, the library where I was gonna download some stuff on shared T3 was closed. Back to my dialup. Since I live an hour away, I won't be trying any PMs at other stores. All in all, I'm pretty ******* pissed off. Wasted 8 hours of my time, and still don't have the damn drive :disgust: :mad;

Yeah, should have. I didn't take the time to read past page 3 of this thread, and didn't realize that all those posts were about sunday...

Well, the deal seems to have worked for me yesterday.

As I posted earlier, I went at lunchtime and bought the drive. No PMs or anything then. All I did was confirm the return period (if anything with the deal went wrong), got my receipt and rebate forms, and left.

Then, after work, I went back armed with a copy of the BB shelf tag and the CC PM policy. I found a worker and asked "who do I see about a PM?" and was directed to one of the managers. The manager was a young fellow who didn't look like he was very "into" being at work that day.

I said "I'd like a PM on this" as I pulled out my receipt. I then showed him the printout of the BB shelf tag and said "see, they have this for this price, same item #". At that point I started moving toward a register (didn't want to give him time to process any info) and pulled out my credit card. He told one of the CC workers to help me and soon after I walked away with $109 added to my card.

I just hope that the rebate forms work out now. Thanks for the deal, guys.

Hi. I went to BB in San Jose on Monday to try and get this deal, unfortunately they were out of stock at the time. I did get a raincheck for the 79.99 price though they said they weren't sure when the drives were going to be in stock. Yesterday I got an email saying my raincheck was cancelled (no reason stated). Called up BB and they said the drive has been discontinued and they were no longer carrying it, so thats why my raincheck was cancelled. In looking at my raincheck it states "This raincheck guarantees product price or comparable value when identical product is no longer available" which I would assume means they have to give me another brand of hard drive w/ the exact same specs (120GB, 8MB Cache, 7200 RPM...). But the raincheck also states "All prices subject to management approval". Anyone have any experiences w/ using a raincheck this way?...

Absolutely out of stock at every CC within 50 miles of me. There were two stores about 30 minutes away that showed having stock yesterday, but after logging into the CC site today, even those stores are out of stock. I was hoping to get one more before the deal was dead, but it appears that the deal is dead for me. It was great while it lasted. :)

When I went in Monday, they had the product card still listing it at $79 which I took to customer service to get my raincheck. However when I called today they said the drive has been discontinued (I believe WD1200JBRT has become WD1200JBRTL). Exact same drive, slightly different packaging. I am guessing at the "discontinued" issue, but on BB website WD1200JBRTL is listed but no WD1200JBRT. Called BB and they said they do give comparable item for same price if exact item is not in stock (I did not specifically mention what my raincheck was for or the price, I just said "hard drive"), so I will go down and see what happens...

I doubt it and I think it's a mute point about now. Even if BB did still have it for $80, I highly doubt any BB's would have stock right now. The best bet is to find a CC that has it in stock and hope that they don't call the Best Buy to confirm stock.

I got a raincheck as well, but requested they call me. Haven't heard from them.

Anyway, my GF is an advertising attorney, so I'll as her what the rules are when she gets home (it's always fun to go chase hot deals with her because she can talk legal circles around any CSR). I know that the laws are heavily geared toward protecting consumers, and if someone doesn't explicitly state "quantities limitied" and they are out of stock, they have to honor the price either by substitution or raincheck because stores used to advertise things that they didn't even sell at amazingly low prices just to get people in the door. I bet the problem will be solved with a simple call to BB's customer service line where you mention that you will file a complaint with the FTC using the email they sent you as evidence if they don't honor the raincheck.

Problem here is that the price wasn't advertised nationally, or even regionally. Even by stretching the definition of advertisement to include the shelf sticker, that would be a highly localized advertisement limited to people walking within the store. Seems like your GF will need to prove that the store had it "advertised" at that price--a receipt?

BTW, for those who scored with the PM and the rebates--this is a candidate for DEAL OF THE YEAR!

You think a receipt is better than the shelf tag? No way. A receipt only proves that one person got a certain price. A shelf tag shows that the price was offered to all customers. The shelf tag scan in this thread should be sufficient evidence.

As for what constitutes an "advertised price," people here have been misinterpreting that term.

"Advertised price" is a retail industry term and it does not mean that the price has to be contained in a print or broadcast advertisement. The term "advertised price" refers to the regular published price of an item available to members of the public, as opposed to a special price which is only available to a select group of persons (such as employee prices).

So a shelf tag most certainly constitutes an "advertised price," and the language on your raincheck should guarantee you a fair product substitution for the same price.

Hmm--That definition of "advertised" did not occur to me. I like it! As for shelf tag vs. receipt, I think both are weak because neither of them provides the length of time for which the price is valid. (I checked--the shelf tag does not give the valid dates) I only said receipt because those shelf tags are no longer available to "borrow." A printed ad would have been best, but that's a moot point here.

Just got my 2 delivered today at $79.99 each.

I went on Sunday, saw they were out and then ordered on-line for instore pickup. Order confirmation e-mail stated the instore price. Later on receive an e-mail stating that the store was out of stock (I knew that!), but if I called, they would check other locations or just ship the drives to me for free.

Called them back and asked them to ship the drives. They told me that they would have to cancel my previous order and re-enter it. The first CSR told me that she couldn't give me the $79.99 price. I told her that's not right and told her not to do anything. I called them back 5 minutes later and got a different person. She checked with her supervisor and they okay'd the price adjustment.

For what it's worth, the 2 that I got are in the cardboard packaging, not the plastic. The CC closest to me only has stock of the plastic packaged ones and also shelf tags that show $69.99 after a $90.00 MIR.

All in all, I'm pretty glad that none of the 5 Office Max stores that I went to had the 2MB 120GB drives in stock!

yeahhh... this thread is so dead. I got my drive PM'ed at CC on Sunday, installed and am using the 120GB now, and sent in my rebate forms already. give it up, people. however, I agree about Deal of the Year.

I was so surprised to see this thread still alive I thought for sure people must be talking about something new.

I really dont know why you guys are telling everyone the beastbuy deal is dead.

My BB got in a few drive on their wednesday truck and I picked up 2 more from them yesterday at the 79.99 price. They also had a few WD80gb 7200rpm w/ 2mb cache for $59.99 in stock (no rebate).

The CC down the street still have the 120SE drive in stock when I when to check after going to BB, I purchased two, to try price match again since BB got them back in stock. Went out to my car then back in with my BB shelf tag and recipt. The manager that night at CC wont match BB price on the drive saying they were the same after rebate. I didn't brother and told the guy behind me to go that those HD he was buying is cheaper at BB just down the street. I returned the 2 CC drives and called it a night.
(cc also have the wd120 with 2mb cache for $69.00 after rebate, but they no longer have any WD80gb 7200rpm w/2mb cache in stock to pm againts BB. Those came out to 52 with the price match against BB on Sunday)

deal is not yet dead, maybe zombie like ...
79.99 for a 120gb SE and 59.99 for a 80gb still isnt bad (out the door prices)... :>

good luck you all...

BTW also found a few other items at BB
celeron 1.2 retail box for 29.99
Mintek DVD player for $33.84
Uniden GMSR radios pair for 13.99
( all new in box clearence items)

Seems dead to me. The BB near me are all remodeling but either they don't have it or the one that did have one rang up for like $159 or something not interesting.

Two Best Buy stores here still have them at $79 and others seem to also. And my local Circuit City has an in-store price of $69 AR. I've tried twice to get them to pricematch but they won't do it, insisting that their AR price is lower already. So just because your local store has raised the price doesn't mean this is a dead deal. Depending on where you live, this is NOT dead at all, it is YMMV, as it was from the beginning.

Try buying it first and then price matching it. The rebates won't even come into play at that point. I did that for my second purchase. I bought it for full price at the check out counter and then walked immediately over to the customer service desk to do the price match. The day before in the very same store, I got denied for doing a straight price match because of the rebates.

That's exactly the way I did it two days in a row. No dice. They are keenly aware of the rebates at my Circuit City and will not budge. I don't care to try a third time, but at least the deal is still possible for some.

Vanderbilt, class of 1997.

Very nice how you selectively quoted me also, leaving out the definition of "advertised price." So I'll say it again:

"Advertised price" is a retail industry term and it does not mean that the price has to be contained in a print or broadcast advertisement. The term "advertised price" refers to the regular published price of an item available to members of the public, as opposed to a special price which is only available to a select group of persons (such as employee prices).

And you went to which vocational school? ;)

This deal was extremely awesome. I've come up with a few tips for people regarding deals.
1. Always try to buy on Sunday, (or first day of sale). Corporate will always try to screw up a deal such as this on the following business day.
2. Always purchase first then PM afterwards, preferrably a few hours later. If they check stock at that time you can tell them it was in stock when you were at the other store after leaving store of original purchase. Also, BB will only PM at register not 110% of difference.
3. Always ask for receipt copies at time of purchase including rebate forms. I haven't tried this yet but since some cust reps demand the rebate form back then you already have a copy.
4. Try to carelfully select a cust rep to do the PM with. I prefer to do it with young ladies since many men act anal about PMming and so do some older women. Don't hold me to this one specifically since it's only based on my experiences.
