Does anyone know if I'll be eligible for this rebate even though I've exercised a CompUSA/WD rebate in mid February?
The offer number for the rebate in February was #6085, and this one is #9098. Theoretically, I should be able to get this $100 rebate, but I am not sure. I'm just double checking with you guys. I don't want to get burned out of $100.

Its all TCA, put it this way... They sign a contract with Hercules, QPS, Compusa, and what not. If they don't get the money it is because of the writing in their contract, they must not have any negative consequences to not pay. They OBVIOUSLY have a problem with this (on about 50% of their rebates) as most of the time the rebates come well over the 8 week time period.

Also remember, TCA is the same fulfillment company that bounced 200 Checks... They probably already got the money, just spent it all.

TCA Rebates at CompUSA are slow, but they eventually come through. I believe New York State had a beef w/ TCA over slow rebates, and there may have been a (toothless) agreement that TCA would become more responsive.

IMHO, rebate fulfillment has nothing to do with CompUSA. It's the manufacturer that funds the rebate programs; Western Digital has been funding dozens of different drive rebates in the past year alone and they are pretty reliable. The rebates you have trouble with are the smaller no-name companies that won't pay up until you call multiple times.

Note I'm not a fan of TCA Rebates at CompUSA, but every now and then I'll cave into a good deal there. Since you have to pay local sales tax (at 8% in CA) I'd rather stick w/ the Dell deal if I had one coming in rather than go through a bunch of hassle to save $10. Plus since when is Delivery Confirmation FREE? It's free only if you print out a label on the website?

When Compusa runs an Advertisement with a huge rebate they are responsible for what happens to their customers after the fact. If Compusa cared about their customers, they would get rid of TCA. They obviously Don't Care. They knew that QPS was going to go bankrupt (probably at least 4 months ago). They kept running rebates from them, even if they didn't know they were going bankrupt, they knew that they hadn't paid out from their last 2 or 3 promotions. But they continued to push their products with rebates.

If Compusa wanted to they could switch to a much more consumer friendly rebate company, like Staples has. But that would cost them money, in actually paying valid rebates.

Compusa doesn't have to push certain rebates on consumers that probably won't get paid, but they do anyway.

how reliable is wd is the real question here, i know crapusa rebates stink, they still owe me $2 bux from march of this year, not worth going after them for $2 :)

i think the best drives out there are in this order -> seagate - maxtor - wd - ibm

ya, i know this is the SE hd by wd, suppose to be very fast, but long term reliability, i'll stick with maxtor.

just my two cents.

IBM has had alot of problems, out of my friends 3 drives he bought, 2 died in 3 months (OEM no warranty). I bought 2 120GB drives, returned one got another, 2 out of 3 made a clicking noise.

Though, the IBM 13.5 GB drives I had are still working after being on almost 24 hours a day for 3 years.

How reliable is wd? Good question.

Not to say it's not a good discussion topic in any way. But I've noticed whenever there's a hard drive deal, and discussion starts on whether Maxtor is better than WD or IBM or Seagate or Fujitsu, eventually it'll boil down to anecdotal stories that are interesting in itself, but not very helpful for the reader to conclude which brand is the best. Usually, someone will mention such and such brand is crap. They bought 2 drives over the past year and both failed within 6 months. Then another person will say no no mine's has been working fine for 3 years now. And so on and so on.

Until there's any large scale statistical data to prove that certain brand is more reliable than others, I'd say it's pretty hard to conclude which brand of hard drive is the best.

Just my 2 cents.

Edit: Back to the WD1200JB deal at CUSA. Great deal by the way. Even the Dell branded ones cost $151 after 20% off. If the rebate wasn't for $100 but rather $30 or so, I'd definitely go for it. Of course, if the rebate processor wasn't TCA, that would have been even better.

It seems far too many people have reported negative stories about TCA for these to be anecdotal incidents. Whether or not a rebate pays out eventually may have something to do with the manufacturer. But still, a company that bounced back 200 rebate checks, then called off the whole incident as "a fluke", never offered any apology or any reparation (for bounced check fee) certainly is not worth dealing with.

Buying -- or avoiding -- a particular hard drive based only on the brand is just plain stupid. Manufacturers change suppliers and technology constantly. Read reviews on the exact model you're interested in. That's the only way to get informed advice on a particular drive.

This particular drive was the #1 IDE drive at StorageReview.com forever.

Agreed...brand name makes no difference considering the constant turnover in suppliers for HD makers.

Snedman, I went to my US Post Office today to mail off a rebate for my Microsoft Casino game. I asked them if they could provide me with a free delivery confirmation, but she said no. Unless, of course, I buy their priority mail service for delivery confirmation, but that cost an extra ~$5.00. She made it sound like they never do delivery confirmation on regular envelopes. Maybe I misunderstood you? How do you do it exactly?

For all it's worth , I did a similar rebate from CompUsa less than 2 months back on the same drive and going to the same place. And my rebate came in about 5 weeks. Even I was expecting lot of trouble but I got it much before I had even thought of checking the status. So IMHO the rebate should be good. My rebate was for 120$. And I also used the BVG to get the drive for about 60$ before tax.

I have sent many, many rebates to New Rochelle. They aren't always paid on time, but I have gotten each and every one of them! I'm going to use certified mail, return receipt on this one . . .

YMMV

I have the same experience as yours. Sent LOTS and LOTS of rebates to TCA and on about 50% of them had to call many times before I got the checks, but eventually I got the check for all of them. So if you hope to get your rebate from TCA, you just have to start pestering them as soon as 6 week's over.

On another note, can you send a certified mail with return receipt to a post box (TCA's address is P.O. Box 821, New Rochelle, NY 10802-0821) ? Who will sign for it ?

I just sent this rebate today and I used Priority Mail with delivery confirmation. Printed out the label from USPS.com and got a nice receipt with the delivery confirmation# which I can use to prove that they indeed get my documents. $3.85 for a $100 rebate seemed worth.
