that's for external firewire enclosed drives only

/edit: you edited at the same time 😉

Yep, wrong form. Be carefull at Fry's when buying that they give you the correct $50 rebate form. Lots of people are complaining that they are getting the firewire one at checkout.

just picked up the 120gb drive. my total came to 193.94 after tax. minus the $80 rebates, i get $113.94. i was thinking that the 160gb drive isn't a hot deal because it comes out to be just about a dollar per gb. however, the ata100 controller probably makes up for this. anyone know if any new mobo's have this built in?

I just got back from Fry's with the Drive, will have my inlaws give it to me for xmas, great deal. I do like the fact that fry's in Woodland hills had a ton of them in stock.

Yesterday evening, I bought a Western Digital 120 GB "special edition" from Fry's - everyone should know what this drive is. In store cost was $179.99 with two mail in rebates, one for $30 and another for $50.. OR SO I THOUGHT.

I check out, and the cashier gives me TWO rebate receipts attached to two forms. The rebate receipts clearly state that one rebate is for the amount of $30, and the other amount for $50. When I go home I look more carefully at the rebate forms. The $30 dollar one appears to be fine, but the form for the $50 dollar rebate is for the 120 GB USB 2.0 EXTERNAL hard drive! I know that this must be wrong, so I call Fry's and I ask them to fax me the correct one. The lady was very nice, said she would fax it ASAP. Guess what - the fax me the same frickin' rebate form! Therefore, I call up Fry's again and I told them that they got it wrong again. The lady says: "Oh no, sir, we have it right. The rebate form may appear to be for another product but it is actually right. You need to send in BOTH rebates together, in one envelope, and it will all work out."

This sounded very very fishy to me. Why in the world would you have TWO rebates if you send them in together? So, I call the 1.800 number listed on the rebate form and guess what.. they tell me that Fry's f--ked up - THE 50 DOLLAR REBATE DOES NOT EXIST. I'm like what the hell, so I call Fry's and demand to speak with a customer service manager.

The Manager says that there was an error, but Fry's has an agreement with the rebate people about the $50 dollar rebate. He repeats the same thing as the lady, to mail out both rebates together. This is what I say: "OK, I will send in both rebates together as long as you fax me a letter this instant that states your name and position at Fry's and you sign a letter stating that this rebate is indeed valid." He hung up on me.

WHAT CAN I DO? It's only $50 dollars, but I am determined to fight this one to the finish. I am planning on making a physical trip down there in about an hour or two. Suggestions?

Any idea on the price of the 180GB? I bought one last week for $179 after rebate, but would definitely go PM it if the price is lower this week (as it seems the 120 and 160 are).

So.. My question is, for us people who don't have a Fry's near us, anyway to get a similar deal through outpost. Whats going on with th $50 dollar rebate? Does it work at outpost?

the rebate has both the fry's electronics and outpost.com emblems on it and also says, "Offer valid only at Fry's Electronics or Outpost.com 12/20/02 thru 12/24/02".

so... buy the drive from outpost.com, get the rebate (call outpost.com and get it from them, call fry's and get it from them, contact western digital as it appears to be a manufacturer rebate, or have someone give you a copy/scan), and there you go.

of course, the rebate says "fry's or outpost.com" on it, but ymmv. heck, with any rebate isn't it always kinda ymmv? ;-)

dang, people are really having rebate form problems with this deal. sorry, let me correct that... FRY'S is really having rebate form problems with this. ;-)

i don't know what ignorance/stupidity fry's is feeding some of y'all, but the rebate form right here (gonna mail it tomorrow) is for fry's (or outpost.com), $50, model WD1200JBRTL, dec 20-24 2002, and requires completed rebate request form, capacity label COPY, and purchase receipt COPY (though fry's prints out a rebate receipt for each rebate in addition to the regular receipt).

it's for a "Western Digital 120 GB 7200 RPM retail packaged hard drive (WD1200JBRTL) from Fry's Electronics or Outpost.com during the promotional period of 12/20/02 thru 12/24/02." (and do i really have to tell you that that's a direct quote from the rebate form, with the quotation marks and all.)

hope that clarifies the situation for everybody. (why can't stores include this specific information in their ads, both in print and online?!)

no rebate problems for me. i dont go to frys often....takes an hour to get to one. it was funny walking around the store. although surprised with they amount of computer parts and no worries of theft, the frys employees were fighting with each other. as i walked by some frys guy talking to another guy: "why you so fing lazy", and the other guy was like "f off, im tired and dont give a sh*t" then i was over by the dvds and these 3 guys were arguing and then one guy "im just going to walk away" i thought(wished) a fight was going to break out. so much drama in that place.

rebates forms were correct though, and the $50 one says valid at outpost.com as well. but no mention of outpost on the $30.......

I went to pick this drive up at Fry's. So far, I am on my second dead drive now. What are the chances of that?

ditto. it's a hassle to get to the store, but the biggest hassle is inside the store. bad customer service. bad setup (wrong/conflicting price tags). just bad. BUT occasionally they have a deal good enough (and i have a need big enough) to drag me out there and through the store.

the $30 rebate i have (actually a 100/80/30/40 rebate: $100 for 200 & 180 GB, $80 for 160 GB...) doesn't have the outpost.com emblem on it, but clearly says "Offer valid only at Fry's Electronics or Outpost.com..." on the front and "Purchase... from Fry's Electronics or Outpost.com..." on the back. though i'm pretty sure, even if it isn't this very one i have, that the $30 rebate form at outpost.com is valid. ;-)

how many different rebates is fry's handing out?! this is almost humorous (if i knew it wasn't causing customers grief).

had the same happen to a friend. two bad drives in a row. he didn't try a third time. (well, for the third time he tried best buy.)

i was sure to get a retail drive (skipped the oem 80gb drive they had for $90 [no rebate] earlier this week), gotten out of the middle of the stack, appearing to still be in the original shrinkwrap, and definitely without a "customer return, quality checked" (YEAH RIGHT!) sticker.

the first thing i did when i got home was run wd's disk check program (comes on the floppy disk included in the packaging) in both quick and thorough modes. right now running badblocks (a linux/unix program, if you haven't heard of it) on the entire drive in read/write mode (destructive; fine since there's nothing on the drive yet) and will probably leave it running when i go to bed.

thank God (literally) that i didn't get a bum drive, especially considering how far away fry's is from me and that it's so close to christmas (went at 9:30 pm and only waited 60 seconds in the checkout lane). now just hoping that the rebates come through.

With the way the prices have dropped on this drive since summer, I'm assuming that these current units only have the "new" 1 yr. warranty period ???

hehe, im in Escondido. i picked up 3, for 3 different people. could have picked an extra one up. the 15 was a mess going down there. they are going to open a frys out in san marcos. still a half hour or so for you? but better than mission valley eh?

Can someone post a link for the $50 rebate. Since there are no Frys near me, I would like to get this from Outpost.com and just use the 30 + 50 off.

outpost.com has this drive for 119 after a 30 dollar and 50 dollar rebate is there anyway to PM the fry's price to the outpost.com price?

and is there a way to PM the outpost.com price to like CUSA, Staples or the like so we don't have to deal with rebates =P

thanks a lot all ai to heiwa 🙂

Damn, the $50 rebate for the 120GB was only good through the 24th. The $30 rebate is still good through tomorrow though.
