4 years ago i had v dsl and it was slow as hell.. i switch to cable but its mad expensive.. 2 weeks ago i try to switch back and both my phone # says dsl is not available.. im like wtf.. they yank it out of the area ?

Do you use their local phone service, or VoIP? I've been using cable internet and Vonage for over a year. For the heck of it, I ran my number through Qwest's DSL checker, and it said my number either didn't qualify or I needed to establish new service. Either way, I had Qwest initially when we first moved in, and I remember *almost* signing up for DSL... you may just need to call and speak to someone.

i've heard bad things about verizon dsl...

I've been with them about a yeaer and a a half and am quite satisfied. When I had cable modem in central massechusettes it would be down for approximately 5-10% of the time it seemed while Verizon DSL has almost never been down. But what made me stay with VOL while paying a little more than I would pay than if I switced to the least expensive DSL option e.g.. SBC) was their excellent news server which, until recently, would allow me to download from binary newsgroups at *full* download speed and had an excellent completeness. However, the newsgroups have slow down considereably (the body in charge of newsgroups for VOL is trying to get more bandwidth for their news servers).

But I have a question: has anyone who recently signed up for their 1 year commitment contract for the standard 1.5mbps/348kbps at $29.95/mo been able to switch over & get the upgrade to 3mbps/768kbps for the same price, or am I stuck with 1.5/348 for a year?
I coulda swore we had an agreement thing with them when we signed up in August or so, but when i asked on teh phone she said we were month by month and they upped our service on the spot and wacked off 5 bucks from the monthly bill. I can't wait! Should be active by tomorrow or friday, spend the weekend downloading porn at 3Mbps 🙂

just called, spent 6 minutes on hold took about 5 minutes to upgrade, so much easier than dealing with verizon before. the csr explained that they are going to actually advertise this to compete with cable starting friday, so id call it in now to beat the rush of people starting friday.

Interesting .... just got off the phone with VZ and having known my previous distance to be 11,250, it was more or less a crapshoot. They confirmed the upgrade for my location and dropped my bill from $37.99 to $29.99, plus doubled my UL and DL. This goes into effect tomorrow after 4:30, so I'm a happy fella. Smokin' hot deal and thanks for the post, OP !!

WooT: speed test confirms my jump. I'm a shade under 2.5mb a second now, which is a very nice jump from my previous mark. Considering I was supposedly out of range at 11,000+ feet, I'm satisfied.

their customer support blows ass and their CSR's are so stupid it makes a panda bear look like albert einstein.

ROFLMAO

After I saw this I wanted to switch bad but there is no Verizon DSL in my area. So I called my cable internet ISP's customer retention unit and got a promo for $38 per month for one year. Thats' a saving of $266 a year over what I was paying!! So thanks OP for the inspiration. 🙂

i just got the 3mbps/512kbps from sbc for $29.95/mo, wonder if i could pricematch? Especially since sbc messed up and delayed the line upgrade for another week (which was up today, got the new speeds today). Took a dozen calls to find out why i didn't have my new speeds on time.

Are you getting the promised speeds?

What do you mean? If you mean tht it isn't available in MA, just call back and you'll probably get a rep who knows what they are talking about. This speed/price isn't official till Friday so some of the reps don't know yet.

maybe they meant verizon dsl isn't available in their area. as such is the case with me.

just about... but they say to leave the modem on 10 consecutive days for them to tweak and optimize the connection/line after getting dsl or upgrading. fastest i've noticed downloading so far is a tad over 300KBps but I just got the upgrade this morning. but if i don't get ~375KBps i should be getting (roughly), i'll be calling them up. I haven't monitored upload speed yet, but dslreports speed test said 414kbps, which equates to about 52KBps, again, about 100kbps less than what I ordered. We will see though.

something funny too - the final time i had called sbc tech support (long story) last week they eventually told me some guy that deals with the actual line testing and configuration would call me back in 4 hrs. He did call eventually and had even uncapped my line to 2mbps (back last week when i still had 1.5mbps plan, same long story), and was seemingly willing to let it remain uncapped if it fixed my "speed problem."

So i'm wondering if i have him call back up or whatnot have him uncap my now 3mbps speed, if i'll get more lol 😛

Bah, all you lightweights and your Verizon DSL will bow before me and my powerful Verizon FTTP! 😀

If it was available in my area you have no idea how fast I would be on that...

we checked our neighbors # before moving... DSL available. Now, it's not. 🙁

And there there's Bellsouth...

Price: As low as $29.95 for the 1st 6 months and as low as $44.95 thereafter per month plus upfront costs
See pricing details to learn how you can qualify for the lowest price with BellSouth AnswersSM. Regulatory Cost Recovery Fee will apply. Taxes and fees assessed by governmental entities may apply.

i live 20 miles from boston with a verizon building i can see from the back of the apt bldg and they say i cannot get the upgrade because i'm not with in "1100 line feet" of the service? wth does that mean? she said it doesn't matter, the line might have to loop all thru the center of town and then to me so i don't qualify.
i guess i'll try again in a little bit. i've always been happy with verizon dsl. she was happy to upgrade me until telling me it wasn't available. i dunno.

edit-- seems like it would be a ridiculouly limited offer if this "line feet" is for real.

hmm. i should look into this.

Earthlink (supplied by Covad) did a free upgrade of d/l speeds to 3Mbps, of which i max around 2.5Mbps, but they left u/l speeds at the same 3xxkbps. would love to double that!

I have had VOL since it was available here and have had no problems that come to mind.

But I have a question: has anyone who recently signed up for their 1 year commitment contract for the standard 1.5mbps/348kbps at $29.95/mo been able to switch over & get the upgrade to 3mbps/768kbps for the same price, or am I stuck with 1.5/348 for a year?

Just got off the phone with a very nice CSR, she verified that my phoneline was good for the upgrade (Which I knew as I had it a couple of months ago) that the monthly rate would remain at $29.95 (I upped for a year last week) and processed my order! All in all it took less than 10 mins total. So the answer to your question? Yes you should be able to get the upgrade. 🙂

Still not available in our area. Which is understandable since we were under GTE before. The worst of the baby bell in term of technology.

Finally got around to calling today. Supposed to be up tomorrow AM.

Right now on Toast.net I get 1532 down/ 448 up.

I'll check back after they switch over.

BTW. Thanks OP
