Today you can get Verizon DSL 3Mbit/768kbit for 29.95 w/ 1 year contract.
EVEN without long distance service.

call 1 877-483-5898 and ask for billing

You can get this if you loop length is less than 11K ft on the east and west coast.

HERE is the Broadband reports thread about it.

hmm...this is getting pretty competitive...although I remember the nightmare that was dealing with Verizon...plus my local provider is now MCI.

I called in three weeks ago to order my DSL, price match it with Dell's TWO months free.

So basically am paying $25bucks a Month for a year. Much better deal.

I live like 30 minutes from D.C. and Verizon hasn't even gotten 1.5/384 here yet. It's ridiculous. We're still paying $29.95 a month for 768/128.

Great... more bandwidth they'll promise and cannot deliver.

Thanks for the post though.

Wow..

that's sweet.
i'm gonna switch over to DSL.

I get 5mb/384k

but i'd much rather have 3mb/768k

I can give up some download speed for some upload speed.

I live in central massachusettes & when I called to upgrade my current Verizon Online 1.5MBps/348 package to the the 3.0 offer with 1 year commitment, the customer service representitive told me that $29.95 3MBps/768 upstream deal is only being offerend in NY State. Anyone know what's up with that?

Dang, I just went with this upgrade (from 1.5/384) a couple weeks ago. They put me on a one year contract, but the price is $34.99. I wonder if they'll automatically change it to $29.99 for me. I'll have to call them to see.

And if anyone is wondering, I get around 2500 down and 710 up. It was a painless upgrade since I already had 1.5/384 with their Versalink modem. I just called, they put in the upgrade request, and the next day I had the faster speed. I didn't even have to power cycle my modem. The extra upload is great for running servers. I could run a 16 person Counter-Strike or Day of Defeat server.

it was just for NY state, but if you look at the broadband forums it says its nationwide as of probably just today. im going to call them tomorrow after work, even though i have had horrible luck with calling verizon in any way, their customer support blows ass and their CSR's are so stupid it makes a panda bear look like albert einstein. but even though they have all those problems, the big speed increase should be worth the trouble as i am only 6k feet from the CO

Just call back tomarrow, more reps will probably know by then or you'll probably atleast get one that knows whats going on.

Probably not. That modem is for Frame relay and not ATM which Verizon uses now. For you to get this to work if it is even possible depending on the area you are in you will need to discuss this with a rep. More than likely they can switch you over to ATM and they would give you a newer Westell modem. Not sure on that though. IT really depends on your location and local systems.

Yeah, what JBT said is correct. The Fujitsu Speedport (RA14) is the old modem which is for the frame relay. You need to be on an ATM to get the faster speeds. Just call them, and ask for the billing department. Then tell them you want to switch from frame relay to an ATM. What they'll do is cancel your current account and put in a new order. That means they'll ship you a new modem. The only downside to this is that you'll have a couple of days of downtime since your service will be cancalled and you'll have to wait for the new modem in the mail. I know this because I had to do it a while ago when I was with the 768/128 speeds and wanted an upgrade to 1.5mbit/384.

I live an hour west of Boston. Just ordered verizon fios today. coming out to install apr 6.
15mbs dl / 2mbs ul. more than 3times speed of comcast and cheaper. $39.95/mo. I hope it is as reliable as cable. My cable is almost NEVER down, but 15mb -- too hard to resist....

37.95 I think but they have upgraded + dropped prices twice in the last year so I doubt it will be that.

If it was available in my area you have no idea how fast I would be on that...

I've been with them about a yeaer and a a half and am quite satisfied. When I had cable modem in central massechusettes it would be down for approximately 5-10% of the time it seemed while Verizon DSL has almost never been down. But what made me stay with VOL while paying a little more than I would pay than if I switced to the least expensive DSL option e.g.. SBC) was their excellent news server which, until recently, would allow me to download from binary newsgroups at *full* download speed and had an excellent completeness. However, the newsgroups have slow down considereably (the body in charge of newsgroups for VOL is trying to get more bandwidth for their news servers).

But I have a question: has anyone who recently signed up for their 1 year commitment contract for the standard 1.5mbps/348kbps at $29.95/mo been able to switch over & get the upgrade to 3mbps/768kbps for the same price, or am I stuck with 1.5/348 for a year?

Pretty sure the contract is really only to be a customer of VOL. So I bet if you give billing a call they would upgrade you no problem.
