HOT Update to Staples Visioneer 8100 Deal! -$3.03 before tax at B&M! YMMV.

I saw that the Visioneer 8100 wasn't on the website anymore, so I went to my B&M and had them pricematch Shentech.com, who is selling it for $55. However, shipping to my area costs $11.97 from Shentech, so my B&M pricematched $66.97. The manager had one of the CSRs go to the website to check how much it would cost to have the scanner shipped to the store from Shentech.

At my particular Staples B&M, there was no rebate tag on the shelf for this item. I'm guessing that no one in the store knew about the rebate.

I looked at the $70 rebate and it says that store purchases are valid also.

$66.97 + tax at my B&M minus $70 rebate = -$3.03 before tax.

That's a sweet deal for those who did not get in before when this scanner was free, thanks OCDuron :)

<< how good is visioneer with their rebate? >>

I received one of mine after about 5 weeks. Staples rebate center handles it and they are usually very good about rebate fulfillment.

Actually, you can save yourself a bit more $. Just don't show the shipping price from the other place. Their default shipping price is $5. It's posted on their website. Thus, you should be able to get it for -$10 + tax.

Did they give you any trouble about pricematching a website. And can you use a coupon?

I'm amazed that in over 300 posts regarding this scanner no one really talks about the scanner, just different angles on how to get a good deal.

Well this is hotdeals but I should think that WHAT you are getting a good deal on should also matter.

Anyway I figered at $15 (with tax) what could I loose. So did not get the best -$3 deal but still not bad for a USB 600x1200 42 bit scanner.

Just took it out of the box so here are my initial comments:

Hot:

1. USB and Parallel Printer cable included.

WOW. I've purchased printers that don't even include a printer cable. Retail price on a USB and printer cable is probably close to the $15 I will end up spending.

2. Got the XP version with PaperPort 7.0.

3. AN OFF SWITCH. This is really sweet. A lot of scanner these days don't have a simple off switch. As I don't scan very often having an ON/OFF switch means I don't have to get off the couch to plug the darn thing in!

4. Dust free (problem with some epsons dust under the glass)

5. Feels solid. Some of the scanner these days feel like they are little toys. this has a nice solid feel.

Not Hot:

1. Scanner has an ADF port. Visioneer makes ADF scanners that are probably just this scanner with an attachemnet. All well and good BUT Visioneer won't sell you the ADF attachement.

2. Paperport is slick and makes scanning a breeze. BUT stores documents in BMP format which I believed is not compressed. Would have preferred a compressed TIFF or GIF or PNG format. (May be a setting I am missing).

3. Spyware???? Paperport installs a program called BMUpdate.exe that tries to access the internet when you boot up your computer. There is no way that I can find to disable or uninstall the bmupdate software other than hacking the registry. I've done searches on google and usenet groups and can not find out what this software actually does. May need to let it talk to it's mommy and do a capture but for now I'm just blocking it.

4. Not supported by vuescan (good photo scanning software).

5. not supported by xsane (no linux support)

Still need to try photographs, so far overall I'm happy with this scanner....

By default no compression is used (".BMP" format).

However, you can set one of the scanner buttons to scan directly into the Paperport Desktop. In the Paperport Desktop preferences, you can toggle compression off or on (JPEG) and then decide how much compression you want for stored images.

The scanner also has the capability to store directly to a TIFF file (compressed, uncompressed, multipage, etc..), PDF file, etc etc. Press and hold the E-mail button on the scanner, click "Eudora" and then click "Options" - there are many more file formats to choose from...

Hope this helps.

This scanner kicks ASS! :D

You can disable the registry key using msconfig or equivalent

MyComputer\HKEY_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\BMUpdate

Also, PCWorld reviewed this scanner a while back and noted that the color output at the maximum resolution(600dpi) was poor.

The rebate mail in form seems to be just a template. Anyone have any link to the actual rebate form?

<< <<Their default shipping price is $5. It's posted on their website.>>

Where????
>>

Direct from Staples price matching policy:

"Shipping and handling charges are included. When comparing our price to another company's delivery price, the equivalent shipping and handling charges will be included. If proof of the other company's shipping and handling charges are not supplied, then $5 will be added to the other company's price. (For example, if you buy an item from us for $100, with free overnight delivery, and the item is available from another company for $90, with overnight shipping and handling charges of $7, then the difference is $3. You receive 110% of $3, which is $3.30.)"

Thanks for the tips.

Pretty Cool

Thanks for the reg key for disabling BM update!

Also I agree: At 300 Dpi the scans look better than at 600dpi. Scanner is suposed to be a true 600 dpi but looking at the output one has to wonder if this is not realy a 300Dpi scanner?

Minor gripes about the software:

MGI photo suite: useless.

Twain driver: Auto Crop does not crop multiple pictures and put them into separate files. This can add significant time to any large scanning project (I want to scan in the family photos) if you desire one picture per file.

On a 800mhz PIII the paperport photo viewing software, page view, is so slow on large files that it is almost unusable. Same files viewed with ACDSee on the same computer fly.

Question: Is there any cheap 3rd party scanning software/twain drivers that can be used with this scanner????

Overall I think this scanner is worth every cent. It's a great first scanner for getting my feet wet while I save up for an Epson 2450 and/or Acer ScanWit. At 300 DPI scanned photographs look swell and the scanning speed is reasonable.

Hmm, I read the posts in here, and I was wondering what store B&M is...

And also how do you get them to price match the website and get the scanner for free.

TIA

B&M - Brick and Mortar, regular store that you walk into, NOT an online store.
You have to print out the website that you will pricematch against and bring it to Staples, they'll take it from there.
