Ugh tell me about it. I live in Brooklyn. First I called 86th & Lex BB, "yes we have a few left". 3 hours later when I got there they were sold out. Went back home and called Long Island City BB (Queens), "yes we have a bunch left", went there right away came there (1 hour subway) and they were sold out and turns out the idiot didn't understand what special edition dvd set meant and thought I wanted the regular. So now I came back. So a whole f*cking day of running around and still no UT2k3 (I didn't wanna get the reg edition).

UT2k4 you mean....the latest model comes with some nice amenities this year, like Corinthian Leather seats for the Leviathan!

For all those that have been screwed by BB -- my friend was running around today trying to find a copy at a BB with no luck, and found that CompUSA had it in stock.

He was able to have CUSA PM BB at the Danvers, MA store and got it for $30 out the door.

YMMV, but might be worth trying.

What surprises me is that my best buy only had 10 copies of the 6 CD version, and all of those were gone by lunch time! I'm saving my money for Doom 3 and half life 2. Atari sucks for distributing this game terribly. Activision will do much better for Doom 3! Time to figure out this bittorrent stuff.

If I remember correctly, I think it was actually only 40,000 copies of the Special Edition for all of North America, and 20,000 for the rest of the world. I had a hell of a time trying to find one for myself in San Antonio, but I finally got one after calling literally 15 different places on Tuesday - I imagine it simply isn't possible to get one anywhere at this point; if someone still does (around here anyway), I'll be quite surprised.

As far as I know, there isn't a "regular" (non-SE) DVD version, except in Europe apparently.

Tried at BB, Circuit City, Walmart, EBX, Gamestop (two of those), EBGames. I didn't even get to see a BOX of *either* type until I hit EBGames. I bought their last two copies - including the display copy (my son loves the demo, and he's getting pretty good at Onslaught, so I thought I'd do a legit for him). Both Gamestops said the same thing - sold out first day, expect more SE's next week. Seems like Gamestop is the only one that has any reserves. Luckily there are two of them near me. Unfortunately, I just went ahead and bought the normal version. I just don't want to wait, and I wanted to grab the EBGames deal before it expired. So, two copies - two gift card rebates and 1 2k3 upgrade rebate. Two copies for what I would have paid at my local BestBuy for one (they *never* have the black game GCs out anymore).

This was strike three for BB.com. I have tried three times to order something from them, and not recieved the product all three times. Two of those earned them BBB complaints, only one of which was resolved in any way, and that was just a stupid 10% off coupon. This time I pre-ordered the SE version and got the Sold Out email. When I was talking to the BB clerk in the store and told him that, he said "what the hell is the point of preorder, then?" - HE said that!

Thank you, thank you, thank you! As soon as I read your post I called my local store and indeed they have it in stock and selling for $39.99. I left right away and got there after closing, but thankfully the manager gave me some slack after I told him my story of hunting for this game the entire day and coming from far away. I hooked the manager up with $5 for the letting me in, paid for the game and left happy. So in total the special edition cost me $45, but I get the $10 MIR for owning UT2k3 so total is $35, which isn't bad for all I got.

Again thanks for mentioning CompUSA. Anyone in NYC area, I went to the CompUSA on 5th & 37th and they have about 7 copies left so hurry up tomorrow morning if you want one.

I'm off to play baby, w00t!

Just got that e-mail. Hoping they'll pull through on this one. Talked to a CR earlier today and apparently they've been hammered with calls about this F up.

I'm a little aggrivated with the load times on the DVD edition. I have a 5X DVD drive and it literally takes 1-5 minutes to start playing a game. Bleah! Hope they have a patch for that soon :( Otherwise the game is WICKED SICK!!!

The no-cd patch is already out. I grabbed the regular version, and there is no way I'm letting my son lose the cds. No cd patch and keeping the originals out of reach will work until the first patch. Then I might have to pull the CDs out again until the no-cd gets updated. Might sound like a lot of work, but I don't have those ridiculous load times, and I don't have a CD spin-up dropping my frames every few minutes.

Oh, and I just got the damn BB backorder email. After they supposedly cancelled it. Guess I get to drop something in the FS forum later.

This has nothing to do with your DVD, all the game's assets are on the hard drive, all the DVD is used for is check the copy protection to see that you own an original DVD.
Try unchecking "load all skins" (or load all textures or whatever it's called, can't remember off hand) even if you have more than 512K of RAM. This causes the game to load fewer player skins in memory at the start of a level. The only downside is that if a player joins in the middle of a game with a skin that's not loaded, you may experience a fraction of a second hitch while the game loads the new skin.

Actually, the advice above applies only if the delay is while you load a MAP (when you see the pretty picture with a line of gameplay advice). Ifthe problem you got is when you first start the game before the main menu comes up, then the problem is that your DVD has a hard time readingthe copy protection on the DVD. If that's the case, change you DVD drive, get a no-cd patch, and/or bitch to Atari.

Hope this helps.

Turn off the "Download all Skins" or something like that option, thats whats taking so long.

To anybody in Raleigh NC Circuit City has the SE version there. I did a price match to bestBuy, bring the sunday ad so they will not call and check, and got one. There is at LEAST one more. I put it at the FAR right of the games and at the very bottom, it is covered up by 1 game on top. Should be easy to find for a true HotDeal person.

They had not put them out yet so I found a tote full of software to put up. So if someone beats you to the one I hide, there might be another 1 or 2 in the tote. HURRAY!!!!

I don't recall seeing any special edition stuff on the box, so assume its the normal version.

Special Edition is a silver metal box and it's marked DVD SPECIAL EDITION across the front, so yeah, you probably have the regular version. :p
