I'd like to get one to turn my Tivo recordings into SVCDs. Having to hook both my Tivo drives up to my PC to install the software is a drag though. But I might still do it.

Hardware Installation Also other installation steps here. You technically don't need any kind of adapter to do extraction. You can do PPP over the serial port once you get the shell on the TiVo drive. I don't think it's unreasonable to suggest that you find the extraction info yourself, considering that it's borderline illegal.

This is a thread about nics and tivos maybe someone eles will acually give me info rather then point in vauge directions.. I can start google and find what I need just thought I would ask thanks for all your great input..
Dude, you need to be a little more of a self-starter if you're really going to dive into this. Click on the links and you'll find answers to everything you've asked about. There's nothing vague about that!

If you insist on hand-holding or being babied through this process, you may as well stop reading now. Extraction and the like aren't light topics, and no one needs to turn this into a "Hacking Your TiVo FAQ" thread. The answers to your questions are already listed or linked in this thread. Just be patient and do the reading if you're really serious about it.

To install these on a SA unit you should trim 1/8th off the foot and pin that's underneath the connector or it may slide off over time. Use a small allen wrench beneath the board edge to push the pin out.

You can run a cable through the upper fan twist tab hole on the PS side of the case then tweak the cover tab for a little clearance. You might have to trim the tab protector if it's a molded vinyl cable.

I have two sony Series 1 Tivos.
If I install the TurboNet Network cards, can I then subscribe to Tivo's HomeMedia Option?
(i.e. will it work?)
Thanks!

No, that service is only offered on TiVo Series 2 units.

It's really not that bad...you might have a look here to see what's involved.

Score: -1, MPAA Tool.

There's no difference between ripping video from your TiVo and dubbing from one tape to another with a pair of VCRs. Let's say you dumped a tape full of home movies into your TiVo and wanted to extract the video so you can put it on DVD for your grandparents. Explain for us, if you can, how that's illegal.

Wait, what does that mean? Does this make it so Tivo will work even without a phone line? I don't have a home phone and I thought it was impossible to get Tivo to work without it. But if this card can change that, then I'll be happy to buy a Tivo unit and the card. Can someone please explain for those of us that are newbs?

Yes, you can make TiVo get its program listings over the network connection instead of dialing over the phone line. Note that it's not as simple as buying a TiVo and this network card. You have to open the box and install it. Not a big deal for most of us, but a pretty big deal for the average consumer that's voiding his warranty.

Explain for us, if you can, how that's illegal.

It's not illegal to hook your VCR up to the TiVo input and use TiVo to convert your home videos to tyStream for later extraction to a burnable and distributable format. That was your example. It is illegal to do the same thing with a copyrighted movie. Just as with your VCR to VCR recording example, there are legal and illegal ways to use the ability.

That said, I ordered one and hope to finally get into extraction/TivoWeb on my ancient 40-hr Series 1 SA and remove that phone cord that has to run across the room.

Yeah - I would like to second that modding Tivos is definitely not the same as installing an extra pci card to a pc. It's a LOT of reading and a lot of trial and error - and if you're never had any linux experience before, prepare for a small dosage.

But on the bright side, it's an incredibly fun hobby to mess around w/ yet another electronic gizmo and it is quite a rewarding experience to see that you've conquered such a beast.

No more phone lines connecting your TiVo to your phone. No more worries about power surges frying your TiVo modem (for those older TiVos with potentially flaky modems). Ethernet speeds rule. Of course, this assumes you have a cable/DSL connection to the outside world. I went this route last year when I "upgraded" my TiVo from a mere 30 hours to 255 hours at basic quality (or about 70 hours at best quality) and added the TiVoNet card. However, note that you WILL be voiding your warranty (or wait til your warranty runs out). You really don't need to know much to upgrade your TiVo so long as you're comfortable with opening computers and installing/uninstalling hardware. There's even a CD image that contains all the programs you'll need to upgrade/hack your tivo. Make sure you read all the docs before you crack your case, upgrade one thing at a time, make sure that upgrade is stable before upgrading again ... in other words, the usual precautions for an uberTiVo :) hack

Now, if I can figure out how to download from my TiVo to my computer to save onto DVDs, I'll be set ...
