~~~ HOT!! Thermaltake Big Typhoon -- FREE After $35 MIR @ Fry's B&M ~~~
I picked one of these up at Radio Shack for like $6 when they ran a clearance. Have it sitting on an old overclocked P4 and cools it nicely. This cooler is very heavy so maybe not for everyone. When I upgrade to something newer it will transfer to LGA 775 no problem.
Edit: The weight is 813g
I called my local Fry's in Burbank, Ca., and the CSR said there were lots of them. When I got there, I found one repackaged unit on the shelf. I asked a CSR where they were, and he pointed to cartons of them above the stock shelf.
Object lesson -- Call ahead, and don't hesitate to ask if you don't find it right away. 😎
I got something mixed between returned and new... Mine had some crap on the bottom of it. It was also kinda-open already and had a tear in the plastic.
Works fine right now though... $40 spent... Waiting for my $35... Going to have to send that crap out ASAP.
That is because the online price before rebate is $39.99
subtract the rebate
you get $4.99
I know that these were the bomb back in the day, but how good are these in comparison to the new stuff?
Still better than the stock heatsink on some of these CPUs, if you have the space.
It's more than adequate for overclocking many 45nm duos or quads. 48C load with BT + E5300 @ 4.03GHz/1.37BIOS + Prime95 @ 76F ambient. The temp goes up to 54C load with BT + Q8200 @ 3.70GHz/1.34BIOS + Prime95 @ 75F ambient.
The best air-cooled CPU cooler may reduce load temp by another 5C. That would only be an advantage if you're stuck with a bum chip, 65nm CPU, or an i7.
I upgraded the stock fan to a 120 x 38mm medium speed fan to provide more air flow to the PWM and NB heat sinks under full load.
