i am looking around for an affordable budget notebook and i came across this website. their notebooks are much cheaper than any other site out there. they even have 1 ghz notebooks for less than $1600! are those mobile processors even out yet? what are you opinions on this site? and feedback would be appreciated.

I don't even see notebookcomputer.com listed on ResellerRatings.com plus who would trust any e-commerce web site with a Yahoo.com e-mail address? Granted they are a Yahoo! store front but I would be very cautious with these people since I have never heard of them.

The deals seem to be on the IBM i series ThinkPads, and the Sony Vaio's. Anyone ever hear of these people?

I didn't even know they were making 1 Ghz laptops yet...

Some of the items say refurbished so that kind of explains the price.. but i'd be careful buying from a nobody website...

I can't find confirmation that the 1 ghz is available, but pro-star.com, who have been making notebooks for at least a couple of years, have them listed as avaible, and within the price range on the referenced site. I can't find anyone else selling anything faster than an 850 however.

could it be desktop cpu? (since they didn't mention anything about speedstep). do companies actually install desktop cpus into notebooks? if that's the case, wouldn't you have issues with heat and battery life? hmmm.... makes me wonder.

not sure how legit it is, but it is a yahoo shopping member/site. and yahoo makes you go through a process before allowing you to sell, also yahoo's price is pretty high too....this is what i got off of yahoo "Standard protection covers purchases of up to $750. Premium protection, available only when the transaction is completed using Yahoo! Wallet, covers purchases of up to $1000." so if you make a yahoo account and enter your cc into yahoo wallets, they cover up to $1000 supposedly. Yahoo Shopping Buyer Protection. So i say legit?

Some of the time these low budget notebooks use regular desktop processors and as such battery life suffers. Not sure if this is the case for these. If anyone is looking for a good dependable notebook try Comp4Sure they have some KDS ones for a reasonable price.

I dont know ifa nyone has ever bought from them. I would call them up and if i do use a CREDIT CARD i would use the AMEX one where i can change the # everytime just to be safe.

I believe most ProStar notebooks use desktop and not mobile versions of Intel's processors. I bought a notebook from ProStar, not realizing they use desktop versions to keep prices low and speeds high. It had major heating problems (pretty much melted the LCD controller which had to be replaced) and reliability problems (the LCD hinge broke, had to swap out components several times). I wouldn't risk money on a ProStar.

does anyone out there own one of these notebooks? if there are, please provide your input. i am tempted to order one but i am worried this is a fraud. maybe if you use it long enough, the notebooks would meltdown. oh wells...

i dont think why they wouldnt be legit.
prices are pretty normal to me...

if you goto an auction site, they will be about the same, and a bit lower.

I'd be willing to bet that this company is legitimate. I purchased a Prostar laptop through one of their resellers about a year ago. I found the reseller through e*ay. The price seemed too low, and I questioned their validity, so I decided to call them. I spent quite a while talking with the person before making the decision to purchase the laptop. It turned out that they only added $50 to what Prostar charged them. By the way, the prices listed on Prostar's website is what they charge the public. They charge less to their resellers. Anyway, I purchased the laptop and was extremely satisfied with it. I kep it for about 6 months, and then sold it for $50 less than what I had bought it for to buy a new laptop. All in all I was very happy with the transaction, and highly recommend Prostar computers.

As I stated above, I think that this company is probably legitimate. Perhaps someone could give them a call to talk with them if they have their phone number listed and respond back to this thread with what they said.

Two comments on this thread:

1. I have a Prostar notebook and I will never buy another. Very poor quality and battery life, desktop processor not mobile.
2. I have a buddy that just ordered a Sony Vaio from MedNet and they CLAIM that they won't charge his credit card until the unit ships. I told him to watch his credit card account online and see if they charge him early. Also, MedNet is still a Yahoo! vendor.

1ghz processors in laptops are available, but as CJZ said, they use desktop processors and not mobile processors(which is cheaper, yet they produce more heat and use more power). The mobile 1ghz PIII's are supposed to be available next month. You can tell if a laptop is using a mobile processor if it says it has Speedstep technology.

Since we are on the subject of cheap laptops, here is a superb deal:

It is the same computer as a Dell Inspiron 5000e(literally the same, read about it on powernotebooks.com), just for about $600 less then what it would cost you to buy it similiarly configured from Dell. These are great machines and they aren't cheap like Sager's or Prostar's.

Guess I'm dopier than I thought.
What advantage is there to using any particular CC??
