I didn't see this posted before, and at FREE it seems to be a hot deal for those who are looking for MS Office type of application suite, but don't want to pay for it and don't want WARES.

Sun Microsystems (yup, the same guys) has an application suite for FREE. It supports several platforms:

-- Solaris? Operating Environment (SPARC? and Intel) 2.51, 2.6, 7, 8
-- Linux kernel 2.0.x or higher and glibc2 version 2.1 or 2.0.7
-- Windows 95, 98, NT, 2000

It also supports many languages.

StarOffice Impress - A tool for creating effective multimedia presentations. Includes 2D and 3D clipart, special effects animation, and high-impact drawing tools.

Well, while it should definitely be noted that for a price of "free", a software suite this good is something to be happy about (I've had this running on my Linux laptop for a long time; I'm quite happy w/ it), it's been a free download for a long time. ;) Good for those that didn't know about it I guess.

Last time I used this suite, it totally changed the Winders' interface. Is it still poorly behaved in this respect, or does it accept the fact that I already have my interface the way I want it? I'd love to use it, but I couldn't stand how much it changed the interface.

staroffice is always free. I don't like it a bit.
it mainly for linux users, since they don't have anything to type on except pico.

Just stick with ms office, it's standard.

I used StarOffice 5.0 on Linux, but I didn't like how it wanted to be everything in one. It took a while to load, but it certainly did a fine job at saving under Office formats. Maybe they made it faster in the 5.2 version. It's free, so who cares. It's a heck of a download on a dial-up though.

EDIT:
Hehe...I tried 602 Pro PC Suite as well. For the most basic layouts (school papers, etc.), it does a good job in saving under Office formats. For a fancy tables-and-images doc file, it can't handle it. Then again, I haven't tried a very fancy tables-and-images doc file in StarOffice yet.

yeah, the entire suite integration makes it a dog.. takes quite a bit of time to load. The new 6.0 version is suppose to fix some speed issues i read. I'll give that a try, but i don't really like 5.2.

this was in windows 98 btw, i never tried it in win2k.

I have been using star office for about 2 years now and like it a lot. It has been able to do many things that I wanted that MS is just no implamenting in office xp. It does load kind of slow, but so does a lot of ms apps now. I think it is great for both windows and linux.

I found StartOfiice very useful at work under Solaris. It does the job well except spreadsheet macro and opening .dot ( word template files) files that has graphics embadded in it. I believe one can order a CD for around $15 or so.

I have 5.2 running on 2000 and Linux, and it works good. The biggest problem I have is remembering two different menu orders, especially for right-click. I use MS OFfice 200 also, and am very used to certain tasks. You can keep StarOffice from taking over your desktop very easily - it asks you during setup if you want to use StarDesktop as default, and if you want StarOffice to be your default Internet client (it's desktop has full browser / file manager capabilities built in, and it can also handle News and Email) The Adabas database, from what I understand, fully supports SQL / ODBC, and offers native Oracle front end functionallity.

I think it is great for the price, and getting better. I set my Church up on it, and saved them about $1000 over MS Office. Something definately worth looking at for schools, non-profits, home, and small business where cash may keep them from full license compliance. Also great for mixed UNIX/Linus/MS environments that share files.

I tried downloading the Windows version several times, a long time ago. One of the zipped installation files would always be corrupt and wouldn't install because of it. Looks nice, if only they would fix that one corrupt file.

Yes, it's been free for a long time.. But, Sun bought Star Office about a year (or more) ago, and have been putting a lot of work into improving it.

It is now called "Open Office" you can download the latest version at http://www.openoffice.org/

It now behaves as a normal application, with each component in seperate windows. The performance and stability is also much improved. This is a GREAT office environment for home users, partly because it's FREE, and partly because it's very functional & meets all the needs of most users.

The only drawback I see is for people using this at work. Most offices standardize on one application suite for everyone to use, and deviating from that often causes problems. This will continue to be problem until there is an agreed upon XML document standard. Of course, Microsoft won't agree to any standard, because they couldn't hold companies hostage & force them to upgrade to a new office suite every year if they did.

My vote goes to 602 Pro PC Suite 2000...

Free, reads/writes M$ formats, and is only about 16MB download!

I already have 5.2, but I went back to Sthe Star Office site and found you can store files for free online there. All my free accounts shut down, so I was very happy to find this. I don't know how how many megabytes they allow. Each file can only be 5 MB or less.

Uhm, you CAN get rid of that Integrated Desktop. Just go to one of the menus on top and it's going to be the last, or second to last option in the pull-down menu (Integrated Desktop). Uncheck it and VOILA! You can use your Windows normally now :) I'm surprise no one knows about this.

I remember installing this almost two years ago. Little late on the deal :)

I agree...it's mainly for people who choose not to use the Win-tel platform.

Or, those that don't want to pay $250+ for an office application & need to upgrade it every time microsoft decides to break compatibility. Or, if they succeed in pushing their subscription services, imagine paying a monthly fee for using it, or even a per use fee.

I am surprised that OpenOffice hasn't taken off more with the home users who want a good Word Processor for typing letters, reports, printing envelopes, etc.

There are actually several FREE office alternatives:

http://www.koffice.org/
Siag Office (Unix Only)Abi Word Processor - Multi platform support
Open Office (Star Office) - Multi Platform
Gnome Office - Unix only, I think

For Windows users, Open Office is probably the best choice. Linux users, try them all..
