Awesome price. Keep in mind that the SMC does NOT have detachable antennae if you plan to increase coverage in the future it will be difficult and/or more expensive than with some other solutions. Here's one post about how someone hacked theirs.

Man... I had the chance. The item was in stock, but I decided against it. Oh well, that's alright. :) No need to spend extra money.

For those in the know, how does 802.11a compare to 802.11b? Does 802.11a improve on everything over the 802.11b or does 802.11a have it's downsides? I know cost is one downside of 802.11a, any others?

802.11a is not compatible with 802.11b due to the frequency it operates on... A is 55mbps while B is 11mbps (speeds are max)

802.11g is a proposed standard which will operate on the same freq as b but bring the speed up to 55mbps like a, its not out yet

any wireless (B) cards you have now will NOT WORK with (A) access points and vice versa

I saw the deal last night and placed an order even though it was listed as out of stock. I received an order confirmation email. Right now my order status shows the item as having shipped, although I haven't received any shipment email with tracking number like the site says I should have.

Hope this comes through.

for those have saved the 79.99 page, you can always PM using AMEX blue. What I found it that Microcenter B&M has the same router with free PC card (instantly, no rebate needed) for $199. You can buy it at Microcenter and PM it with tigerdirect. So for $99 +tax you will have a SMC wireless router + wireless PC card.

This is (HOT)!!

Yeah, I got in on that MicroCenter deal a couple weeks ago. I was able to get the router off the clearance table because it was a returned item. So, I got my router and the wireless PC card for $150.
If anyone has the page I would really appreciate a copy so I can try to make this deal even better.

I bought it a few months ago for twice the price. It has been sitting unused since in a box because it dies after 15 mins. I always try to get an RMA but they put you on hold for hours!

Who did you try and RMA to? SMC or where you bought it from?

BUYERS BEWARE!

I bought this router from Tigerdirect last Friday and received it today.

Tigerdirect shipped me a SMC7004WBR instead of SMC7004AWBR as originally advertised on their website.

This is a totally different product, it looks completely different and has ports at the front of the unit instead of the back. I believe it has been discontinued as I can no longer find any information on SMC's website.

In addition, the rebate form I downloaded from Tigerdirect.com is SPECIFICALLY for the SMC7004AWBR model, NOT for the SMC7004WBR model that I received.

I would like to verify that indeed Tigerdirect advertised the unit as SMC7004AWBR. Unfortunately the page is no longer there. If anyone has the saved webpage, would you please post the link here or e-mail it to me at pk6junk@yahoo.com - thanks in advance!

Just wanted to give you guys the heads-up that Tigerdirect might be doing the old bait-and-switch technique. Check to see if you indeed did get the SMC7004AWBR when your order comes!

I've been lurking on anandtech for almost a week and signed up not only for the great deals but to thank luv2save. I followed your link to the router on Sunday night at around 11 pm EST and it was already showing out of stock, but I could still place an order. I know its not the smartest thing to do, but since I've heard good things about TigerDirect, I went ahead and ordered one. Much to my surprise, I got an e-mail telling me that it shipped Monday morning. :D Like collin, I didn't receive an e-mail from them with a tracking number so I called and got one from an operator. It's in transit. Even if I don't get the rebate, its still a great price. Thanks again luv2save.

Fishmonger

The model you got is a discontinued model. It was replaced with the "A" version.

I am in the same boat as fishmonger, I ordered my router yesterday and received it today. (Amazingly fast for ground shipping but I live in Iowa and it originated in Illinois) I did not receive the A version either. I really could care less at this point, though as it will work for what I want it to do anyway. It would be nice if I could get Tigerdirect to reimburse me for $20 though. Unfortunately I do not have the screenshot of the item so there is no way I can prove it was supposed to be the A version.
