HOT!!?@ SLK-800 $29.99, SK-7 $19.99, MORE!

nice find magnux! I encourage people to jump on the SLK-800, that price cannot be beat. Well, unless you steal it...

ARgh! I'm torn between the SLK-800 or the SK-7. That $10 saved can buy a nice fan for the SK-7! 🙂

Terrible price/performance ratio. The AX-7 gave extremely good performance for an incredible price, and it was cutting into higher-end sales. People were choosing to buy AX-7's at $15 and take the few degrees C increase over $45 for the SLK-800.

It's all good, though, since they replaced it with the SK-7. The thermal dissipation of the SK-7 is only slightly below that of the SLK-800, and with it on sale at $20, it's a solid replacement for the AX-7. I ordered one to replace my AX-7, in fact, which will be retired to my best friend's box when I get his new K7S5A/T-bird 1.1Ghz system finished.

Save the $10 and get the ThermalTake Smart Case Fan 2. Adjustable speed, good noise ratings. The YS-Tech adjustable 80mm has some good specs, too, but the TT Smart 2 appears to have lower decibels (less noise) at the same speeds, and MUCH higher airflow at top speed (50% higher). It's ugly, but nothing a little paint won't fix.

That's what I'll be running, anyway, when my SK-7 arrives. Bought the TT Smart 2 last week, and at 4000 rpms, it's outperforming the YS-Tech adjustable (which i was using for several months) at full speed (and noise), with less noise. On the SK-7, it should be even quieter (better fin design means less resistance, thus less noise) and provide better cooling than my AX-7 does now.

It doesn't get any better than this, ladies and gentlemen. If you want that CPU cooler, you either pick up an SLK-800 and an ear-bleeder, or get a watercooling rig. Or a peltier or refridgeration unit, both of which require you to insulate the CPU and cooling plate, and that's a LOT of work to get running properly (condensation issues).

SK-7 looks like it will fit AMD processors much better. Doesn't the SLK-800 need extra feet added to work with AMD?

ya it is 🙂 I don't think I have willingly paid over $8 for a cooler 🙂 I am a cheap bastard 🙂

Yeah, stick with the oem ones. Overclocking is overrated anyway. Dont spend too much money on cooling, their value is over rated, at least for me.

But gotta say this SVC is a good company.

If you want to have a quiet case you need to sacrifice airflow slightly and a good quality heatsink is crucial, then, in keeping a cool processor. A 60 db fan will cool any cheap heatsink enough to keep your temps down, but getting an 18-20 db fan to do the job requires a little help.

Hah! That's the fan that my Volcano 9+ came with. I just ordered the SK-7, so I'll just use the fan on it. Excellent. Now I don't lose my "Coolmod". But I will just have a V9+ heatsink lying around, lol. 😀 Thanks.

no sh@t, I noticed that people buy AMDs cpus because they are cheaper than intel's and then spend $30-$40 on a heatsink fan.... In meanwhile my Northwood is doing a 900mhz overclock at default voltage with the stock intel heatsink fan which also happens to be quiet

Heh, AMD CPU + HSF still costs less than an Intel (and in most cases, outperforms it, too). Everyone has a preference, that's what makes this world so great. 😉

Youre right about preferences, its just funny how people buy lower-end AMDs for cheap(like XP1700) then spend $30-$40 on a heatsink in order to overclock it to XP2000 level which on its own only costs about $20 more than the XP1700

No, it works just fine like it is...

I use the SLK-600 and SLK-800 in cases with poor ventilation so if I had chosen an intel or AMD I would've needed a good hsf cause the internal temp will run high (of course it runs higher on AMD).. They suit my needs and I'm happy 🙂

I'm really tempted to get one to replace my GC68. Those SK7's and SLK-800's are really cheap. I bought one SLK-800 for 43.99 just two months ago...

hey all.. i could use some advice... i just bought the gc68 before this sale last week
http://www.svcompucycle.com/newsvcgc3280.html
the reviews on it are pretty decent, and it's only 5 bucks.
Here's the thing though... tell me if i'm crazy of if this could work... I want to put a panaflo on it, and then strap Another panaflo on top of that one (for more air, since the panaflows are slow).
Okay, here's the thing, I'm Not running an Athlon XP... I'm running a good old, hotter, T-Bird, AXIA stepping. It's 1000 overclocked to 1200 ( I can do 1466, but I wont try with this setup of course =)

Any advice/opinions? Is this doomed to fail? Will 2 panaflows make the difference?

More noise, no increase in airflow unless the top fan is moving more air, and at that, the bottom fan will hinder the flow from the top fan instead of helping it. You'd be better off creating a shroud that would hold two fans side by side, or 90 degree angles to each other in a triangular formation on top of the sink.

you should put 3 or 4 panaflos on it
rolleye.gif

what you should do is get a fan that produces more cfm and get some arctic 3

oh yeah...you will get an increase in cfm if you use 2 panaflows...but those L1's ony spin around 1900 rpm...you may only get the both of them spinning around 2200 or 2300(guessing)...svc has a variable speed fan for only $5...you should think about using one that you can manually adjust the rpm

I currently have a GC-68 with a Panaflo L1A (I just recently switched to quiet my computers down - which they did considerably - my wife is very happy 🙂 )on both my Athlon XP1600 and AthlonXP1700 and they run about 118F under load. Will putting the SK-7 with the Panaflo L1A give me much better cooling? How many degrees are we talking?

i have given up on trying to make my computers quiet....i am planning on building a box that will hold 2 computers and using THICK sound dampening material all over the inside of the box....i will use panaflows for bringing air in & out....hopefully this will restore my sanity

has anyone done this here? what were your results??

But you're missing something: for example a 1600+ at 2000+ speeds performs MUCH BETTER than a 2000+ because the fsb is at a siginificantly higher speed, especially in memory tests.

grrrrrrrrrrrrr..... i tried out the gc68 on my Athlon Tbird 1000 (MB=Abit KT7ARAID)..... i was Very careful about seating it properly, but it just did Not fell tight.... the clip seemed to exude hardly any pressure at all! I should have none something was up, but I tried it anyways. I never even saw a post on my screen. Even though the chip didnt smoke or anything, I can only conclude that it fried because some of the Arctic silver turned yellowing, and the warranty label on the bottom of the chip had a burn mark (the die looks just fine though). Wtf? Arent these things rated for up to XP1800+ ?
I would have though that it would have at least POSTed before croaking. Has anyone else who as used these had any experiences with the clip not fitting tightly?
