Oh yeah...

Is it possible to use two wireless routers/access points together? Say one as the one connected to the net and the other as a repeater?

How about bridging two wireless routers together to act as one connection? I'm asking because I have both DSL and Cable at home but in different rooms. Currently, the cable is wired and wirelessly fishing the whole house. The DSL is only for my system cuz it requires high bandwidth (1.5Mb).

I just disabled bi-directional communication and it works fine, just doesn't tell me when my ink runs out,
Right-on, however, not the same as bi-directional port(s). I assumed that you were after full functionality - most are.

As for these two printers, I had one client where we had to use other HP inkjet printer drivers to make 'em work.

Ok, how about extending the antenna? Or making my own antenna? Is this possible?

What is the antenna made of? Can I just get some speaker wire and rope it around the house? :)

Looks like I'm out of the running - I placed my order last friday and the email confirmation said that it was supposed to be delivered yesterday. If I go to the preview website and enter my order # and phone # to track it I get some sort of error. I tried ordering again yesterday and the same thing happened.

It sucks that they send me a confirmation email and then nothing ever happens. I'd call customer support but I'm not sure how I'd explain the lengthy process I went through to be able to order it when it was OOS in my area :)

Don't explain anything to them. Play dumb and simply indicate that you placed your order on-line at the NEW OD web-site.

As it turns out, OD delivered mine via a regular OD truck. Thus, even though I ordered from an out of state zip code, I guess the order either got xfered to my local OD warehouse or was sent there in the first place. Perhaps OD conducted an internal warehouse 2 warehouse xfer, perhaps my local warehouse actually had the item in stock.

out of curiosity, my rebate forms PRINTED out at the B&M OD when i puchased all 3 routers. she rang up one at a time so i have 3 rebate forms. didn't anyone else's forms print out during the purchase???

once again my question remains. I checked my reciepts and the only thing that's on there is my CC#, there's no name. Can i use 3 different names and physical addresses to get all 3 rebates?
Can I use a po box?
Thanks

Hi there I got in this deal in the beginning but stupid me I didn't save the rebate form. For some reason they took the form off the site. Could someone email me a copy or post where I can download it. Thanks for the help.

PS been running the router for a week now and haven't had a problem with it at all.
of course I havent been running with WEP 128. Is everyone havin the same problem with the slowdown? Good thing someone noticed
the note about only upgrading version 1 of the router. I was worrying there was something wrong with mine.

This router is a joke for firewall part of it :(. It only has three modes: allow all traffic, deny all, and block selected services. For firewall what you really need is block all traffic except selected services, called tech support, and was told that allowing selected services is only available for business class router. What a joke! So I will return it.

If you had wanted a firewall, I suggest ZAP.
I think most of us bought this as a Wireless DSL/Cable Router (or some part thereof) and most never thought of this unit as a firewall solution.;)

this item is great for in-lan use...who even really uses it as a firewall?
Most peeps using this should already have a firewall in front of this...$30 to add wireless capability is
what this deal is all about...making this a great deal.

Zap is indispensable in every PC! Your second layer of defense after the router's firewall. I would opt for the SMC barricade though as far as the router's firewall go.

I got in on this deal and just now started trying to use the thing. For some reason I can only get an active link if I touch the antenna of the router to my pcmcia card. I have tried two different cards, Orinoco Gold and Linksys WPC11. I can just barely get any connectivity if I am sitting right beside the router, but the connection isn't consistent. Has anyone else had problems this bad? Did I happen to get a lemon? I am using channel 11 and I haven't turned WEP on yet.

I'm surprised that this wireless technology is still not quite there yet. From what I've read on various tech forums, it would appear that a lot of people have wireless connections that suffer from frequent and intermittent ?drops?. I just installed my Speedstream 2624 with the Compaq pc cards and have found that my connection drops every 45 seconds or so (varies). The wired LAN side works perfectly. The solution, as confirmed by Siemens tech support (yeah right!) is to disable the WEP security. ?You don?t really need it? the girl said. This advice obviously contradicts all the other advice we are given about keeping our networks secure, and we are now leaving ourselves open to even the most casual of hackers. In my case, I found my connection stays ?up? with WEP enabled, but at 64bit rather than the preferred and more secure 128bit. There?s no way that I?d use this technology without at least some WEP security.
I?m sure this technology will eventually mature to a point where it delivers what it promises. Until then, I guess we?re all stuck with wasting hours of our time trying to get the darned stuff to work. But hey, we're used to that aren't we
;)

WOOHOO!!!! :D Office Depot came through for me and delivered my router today!! This was my second order, last saturday, my first one never went through. They shipped it from Detroit to my house in Bethesda :)

I'll be trying it out tomorrow when I bring my work laptop home. Hopefully I won't have any of the problems that some of you have experienced.

Anyone actually gotten an HP printer to work on this thing or is it just me?

I'm not sure where you stand w/ your PRINT SERVER issue; however, I finally got around to hooking up my SS2624 an hour or so ago (I had it sitting around for over a week) to replace 2 existing routers (1 wireless w/o a print server, 1 wired w/ a print server). Anyway, my NEC Laser Printer worked w/ my old WIRED router (D-Link DI-704P) but initally DID NOT WORK w/ the Siemens SS2624. It took me about 20 minutes to diagnose and resolve the problem on my system; however, my problem was due to the SOFTWARE FIREWALL I'm running (NIS2003). If you're running a SOFTWARE FIREWALL on your system, here's the fix:
[*]Permit INTERNET (or TCP/IP) access to C:\Windows\System32\spoolsv.exe
[*]If you're running Win 2K, it's C:\WINNT\System32...
[*]If you're running Win98/ME, find the Windows Spooler program yourself! :p

As for my opinion of the router... I've only been running it for about an hour and as such haven't reached any conclusions about its speed. My initial impression (via a WIRED LAN connection) is that web pages load FASTER w/ this router than my Netgear MR814 (which is a VERY SOLID router). The wireless aspects seem to be pretty good too. The Siemens SS2624 comes w/ a smaller antenna than my Netgear MR814; however, I seem to be getting roughly the same 90%-100% Link Quality & Signal Strength indicators I was getting when connected to my MR814. This is based on a connectipn going from the basement (router location) to the 2nd floor (laptop w/ 802.11b PC CARD). The MR814's larger antenna has the same antenna connector as the SS2624 (which means the MR814's antenna will fit on the SS2624); however, I haven't yet tested the SS2624 w/ the larger MR814 antenna. I'll try that later and see if it makes a difference.

*EDIT* Forgot to mention... I enabled 128-bit WEP immediately. The 90%-100% Link/Signal Strength mentioned above is using WEP 128-bit.

P.S. My SS2624 router is Version 2 (the one w/ the Normal/UpLink button).

Update:

The wireless capabilities of the Siemens SS2624 are unfortunately not nearly as good as my Netgear MR814's capabilities. A desktop PC located on the 2nd floor using an 802.11b USB Networking Device constantly loses the connection to the S2624 sitting in the basement. I've even connected the larger antenna of my Netgear MR814 to the SS2624; however, it simply reduces the problem, doesn't eliminate it. Although it's a great price, I'll be returning my SS2624 shortly. Fortunately I followed my own advice (posted earlier in this thread) and didn't cut the UPC code off the box yet.

P.S. My tests were conducted excusively w/ 128-BIT WEP. Even if the router works ok w/ 64-BIT WEP or NO WEP at all, I'm not interested in keeping a router that only works ok in a less secure mode. I guess I'll continue to use my Netgear MR-814 in conjunction w/ my D-Link DI-704P (for print server capabilities).

from the various off topic threads regarding WEP, activate it.

Does this router not have NAT?
If it does, all services that are not assigned to an internal IP address get dropped.
Is that not sufficient for firewall ?
