HOT! Setting your CRT or LCD to accept two PCs!

Old thread

Thank's to Mani's suggestion, I was able to go home and hook up two PCs on to my CRT monitor. It worked beautifully!

What you need is a CRT with a BNC and a Regular video connector, connect them both up with a PC and use the menu to switch between the two.

I guess that goes the same for LCDs with DVI connectors. I think this is HOT to know. Pls don't flame me.

Oh, right, did think about that.....🙂 But your link to the old thread doesn't work.
^
Edit: Didn't I mean....

nothing new.. i don't think it's a hot deal as monitors w/ both dsub AND bnc are usually hard to come by and/or are expenseive.

it's a nice tip if ya didn't know about it... i was expecting a good deal on a KVM..

<<Isn't that basic knowledge?

PS. Most monitors dont' have BOTH BNC and DB15...usually just the DB15. >>

But most LCDs do have DVI and Analog. 🙂 It should be basic....but I start using my LCD for only two hours....🙂

I use this everyday with my Nokia Multigraph 445Xpro 21". It has a big button on the front that I can switch between two different running computers. You can only realize how handy this is if you get used to doing it. I would never buy another monitor without this capability.

Actually dlaw, relatively few LCD's have DVI. Certainly none of the LCD's that pass through this forum have DVI, and you'd be hard pressed to find a DVI model on display in any store. Maybe a $600 15" model or two if you're lucky but I've sure never seen a large, fairly priced DVI on display, and I've been looking - I've bought 3 Planar 17.4" DVI LCD's in the last year. Two of 'em were last week.

Anyway, what the hell would you use this feature for?

I use 1 monitor (and 1 keyboard/mouse) for 2 computers in a small business network switching between the rarely-viewed file server and a workstation. I bought a manual-switch KVM at Newegg for $14 before shipping. Cables, of course, cost more.

I'm using two 17" Iiyama CRT's with BNC and DSUB. I've also got two systems, one with dual-display, one with single. With the single display, I just hook it up to the DSUB on my second monitor and switch over whenever I need to do something on it.

Amen.

Old Thread:
"Dell LCD Deal: $50 off and 10% off is Back!!! 20% Off Dell Branded Monitors!!!"

I have my main working as win2k and the 2ndry as linux server.

ERrrrrr..... I've been doing this for over 2 years.... I guess it could a deal for someone who doesn't know you can use both inputs at the same time. 😉

If both computers are networked and run windows its much easier to run Netmeeting desktop sharing or XPs Remote desktop sharing,
this is what I use at work with 3 computers and one monitor, mouse and keyboard, this is not good for gameing but everything
else works fine.

Hmmm...I don't see how you think running a desktop through a desktop emulator such as XP remote desktop is even the same or efficient as the intent of this thread. Besides the fact the everything runs extremely s-l-o-w, you are clogging up your network bandwidth with unecessary data due to simple laziness. This is why KVM switches exist. XP Remote Desktop and third party remote management software is great for those emergency situations when no other alternative is available, but hardly a permanent solution that you want to implement in any structured network environment on a daily basis. If anyone from our IT dept was caught engaging in this type of activity in a non-emergency situation, I would fire them on the spot. 😉

<< Glad I don't work for GetReal. I'd be fired almost daily. >>

Actually, we rarely fire anyone. However, we do get a lot of imcompetent co-ops who think every day is a holiday.

You can't appreciate this feature until you have two comps doing different things in your home. Typically the second computer is doing something functional but not in constant need of attention, so you don't need to spend the money or desk space for an extra monitor, but at the same time it may require periodic checking.

Examples:

-Server and personal machine.
-Mp3 machine and gaming machine
-seti @home machine and personal machine
-dvd player machine (if outputting to tv) and normal machine
-cd/dvd burner machine and normal machine
etc etc.
