sorry but you should have gone w/the v6s... also if you have v6s swap the pads to beyer velours. I've owned my v6 for about nine years now and every year I try out new headphones trying to switch but can't find better sound anywhere. Of course, it's a matter of personal preference, but I love 'em. Plus closed ear is good for me.

For the price of so called "high end" JBL or Sony speakers you can get a pair of Sennheiser HD 580s or 600s with a decent amp. That will kick the crap out of every speaker until you hit the very very high price range. If you want it to be closed and still sound good both the Sennheiser HD280 and the Sony V6 are good choices. Sennheiser is a good brand but unlike other companies such as Grado you have to choose selectively, they have a lot of crappy models as well.

The HD 495 aren't as good as the 497s. They require an amp to sound their best because they are not as easy to drive.

Out of Stock unfortunately
Sony MDR V6
59.99 + shipping
Etronics is a reputable cheap dealer, they make up some of the cheap in the shipping charge but still cheaper.

I have a pair of V6s and I think they are ok. Their long term comfort is lacking(I will fix this later), midrange is lacking. But the bass and treble is excellent. Their design is great and foldable.

Get the beyer pads to make them comfortable. If you think that is bad try the Sennheiser HD 497s. After a while they hurt my ears, one of the reasons why I went for the 580s even though the performance difference is not that great it's very comfortable.

Well I'm gonna make this short as I'm pretty tired:

I went back to Fry's and exchanged the 570's and paid the extra ten bucks for the MDR-V6. I've only had an hour to test them out, but here are my findings so far:

1. Although they aren't uncomfortable the Sony MDR-V6 is nothing like the Senn 570. Wow! Those sennheiser 570's were like wearing velvet, and you had a straight cord instead of this coiled/ringed crap sony uses (both cords same length)> winner comfort = Sennheiser 570

2. The Sennheiser 570's were NOT made for quake and therefore don't hold even a candle to the Sony V6> winner quake3 = Sony V6

3. The Sony seem to be much more durable the the 570's and likely to last a long time. The sennheiser 570 felt like it would not survive travel very well, almost delicate. Winner> Sony

4. Music sounded great on the 570's with its acute, and honest sound reproduction. The Sony's go a little easier on an mp3 (an mp3 will "sound" better), but the Sennheiser 570's kick its (Sony V6) ass when listening to instrumental/vocal/...whatever you want Jazz I threw at them (note these were jazz off a CD, and therefore a higher quality than an mp3).

Conclusion: If I enjoyed more Jazz, and listened to all music at my computer through cd's and casually played computer games the Sennheiser HD-570 headphones would be a great/welcome addition (also sounded pretty good while watching the Lord of the Ring DVD).

Unfortunately I listen to mp3s and I play computer games. So the Sennheiser HD-570 were not the headphone for me. I am happy with the MDR-V6, but can't wait till I get more cash under my belt so i can seek out the next tier of higher-end headphone audio.

Good Luck

Rather than replacing the pads with ones from Beyer, get Beyer headphones instead. From my experience for closed headphones the Beyer 250 is definately better than the Sony V6 and Sennheiser 280. The Beyer 250 has a very sweet midrange, and has a better defined lowend.

dang. i feel old... i bought my V6s in 6th grade after reading that headphones were the best gaming audio solution. going to Frys i saw that the sonys looked nice. (120 then) almost 8 years later i'm on my second pair of the V6s and the second pair was only 90? i think. i got them both at frys. becareful with wires. ALWAYS. cuz i messed up my v6s by pulling on the wires too hard near the headphone parts. and i broke my klipsch 2.1s by trying to jam a 16 gauge wire into the small small terminal. hehe.. well. both times I just took them back and got an exchange :) i shall try to learn from my mistakes.
only gripe with v6 is that the stupid cord is so heavy.and it makes my hair look funny after wearing.. hahaha.. :pi wish they had a tighter spring or something so i could put the band behind my head... :T

i love my 4.2 and v6 :)

ooo btw. cant we use dvds to test the audio capabilities?.. hrm.. and i think if i listen to music from now on. i'm going to leave my rear 2.1s on. so i can have some bass :)

oh. and why is anantech so slow nowadays...grrr.

KrayzieKMF, The Sony MDR-V6 is 79.99 + tac @Fry's Electronics. They come in a Gold bozx with an almost maroon fabric behind the headphones.

I was upset for a second because I just ordered mine (at a Yahoo storefront) and paid $10 more.

But then I checked out EtronicHaven, saw that it was setup as a Yahoo storefront, did a search of all Yahoo! Merchants and can't find this place even listed. I did the search to see if it had *any* stars at all (Yahoo's store rating system) but was interested to discover that I couldn't even find the store in their listings.... odd...
