This site seems ligit and has a high biz-rate rating,

-they have the hd-650, sennheiser's top of the line, for $305 - normally AT LEAST $400, often $500.

-JR has it's special back on for the Hd-600, sennheiser's second best, only $250

I have the 600's and can say without a doubt that they are the best out there, don't know how they compare to professional recording headphones - the ones that cost several $1000. But for home theater, if you want headphones, you can't go wrong with these.

sennheiser's top of the line

Sennheiser has several models above $1,000. I can't look it up right now, but I believe the Orpheus, which has its own amp, is over $10,000.

It's worth noting that the 600 has the same driver element as the 580, although a slightly different headband. Sennheiser says that the 600's are "pair-matched by hand," but I personally believe it is like Intel/AMD marking the same CPU's with different speed ratings -- once you are well into a production run (which the 580's/600's certainly are!), it is the same thing.

The point is that the 580's are routinely available for $150, and I have seen $125 crop up on Anandtech every now and then. For 99% of serious headphone users, this would be good enough.

I don't know the backstory on the 650's.

Was just going to say this, a high quality amp is pretty much required. If you're going to invest in expensive headphones you need to invest in an expensive amp otherwise it's like buying a ferrari with a 15hp briggs&straton under the hood.

I'm sorry but $10,000 for head phones???? Cripes!

QFT...Im talking about the GPX head phones that i got with my walkman in the 80's

for 10K those head phones better do alot more than play music if you know what im sayin.

Anything over $100 is excessive for headphones in my opinion. I myself would probably never spend over $50 on them. Then again I don't use them very often so idk...

I've been using a pair of Senn 600's for my primary music listening (at home) for the past several years. I got them in a previous Hot Deal for $180-200 and spent about $70 on a headphone amp. Rather than being an extravagence, I rank these as, hands down, the BEST value audio item I have ever bought. They are comfortable (but large) and top notch audio quality.

to each his own, i never understood why people would ever need to pay more than $30k for any car, period 😛
my hd-650 rig, on the other hand, is worth every penny to me. i am yet to come across a speaker system that could deliver as emotional presentation as this one; though it is pretty much given you could probably do a lot better with speakers, but only with some serious chunk of money. heck, the cost of furnishing a listening room alone would be way over that of my entire system.

that being said, nice price on HD-650s, thats about what a used pair in good shape goes for. having owned hd-580, 600 and 650, i would urge you to save up for 650, for the difference is not little. there is a minority at head-fi who prefer the hd-600, while most agree 650 is sonically superior in many ways.

man! don't tell me that! I had convinced myself I that since I already have the 600's I won't need the 650's, but now .... dangit!

speculation: maybe I could ebay my 600's, and use the money for the 650's....hmmmm

for the uninformed, used headphones can be found at head-fi;

norm prices:

hd600 - 175
hd650 - 300-325.

the HD650 looks like a good deal.

btw, 650 > 600 ; worth the upgrade IMO.

For 10 g's they better have a bevy of Victoria's secret models that take a mold of your head and custom make them for you!
