The gist of it: There is a seller on ebay (Rated at 99% over 16,917 feedbacks) selling new e8500 CPU's, which the cashback deal can be used on (currently at 25%).

$190.99 "Buy it Now" + 9.99 shipping = $200.98. MS Cashback = $47.75, making it $153.23 for an e8500, shipped.

$8.40 minimum for ground at my zip

Yah shipping is a rip-off here, but this chip used to cost $280, so for <$200 it's still a great deal.

My poor E2140 is looking more and more out of date by the day!

I still think at that price the Q6600/Q9300 is going to be more future proof. but still nice chip to have.

Its $212.85 with tax & ship for me
NE has it for $210 less tx FS, so ~$225
a bit tempting, but what I really need is a site like directon with no tx FS to get on the bandwagon
It would also be nice to know just what the official new prices will be on Jul 22

According to the chart on this site (scroll right), the 8600 first comes out @ $266
The 8500 becomes $183
The 8400 becomes $163
http://xtreview.com/addcomment...3-2008-price-drop.html
Im assuming those are USD numbers

I bought 2 8400 @microcenter @$159ea - so I did better than O.K. there
But looks like it may be worth a wait on the 8500 for a few days, but no biggie on $7 dif - just saves shipping cost
The fact that the whole US economy is imploding might help also.

Edit: Just noticed buy.com has it for $194 FS

its $8.90 minimum for me.

Do you really think that's high?

As someone who uses FedEx Ground a lot, let me tell you, they aren't making one penny on shipping.

How much of a difference do you guys think I would see if I upgraded my E6750 which I currently have OC'd to 3.2 GHz to the E8500?

With my current cooling solution my E6750 idles at 18C° so I could probably push it up even more...

I doubt it would be a huge difference, maybe 3-5% in most applications unless they really benefit from that extra 2mb cache. It's not the e8500 stock that will be much better, its the insane OC potential it has. 4ghz OC is supposedly easy on the E8500. That is significantly better then you current CPU.

How are you getting 18C? Sub ambient cooler? If you are really at 18C I would think you have a lot more room to OC to the 3.6ghz range if you can keep voltage reasonable. I'm not an expert on OCing. 3.2 stable is a very respectable OC for a 6750 from what I know.

E8500 OCing review
I think these guys tend to be a bit hard core. I wouldn't expect to get anywhere near their numbers. Maybe 70-80%.

You do realize that they have a corporate account and get a significant discount to shipping costs. I am not saying that they are making money from the SH charge, its probable that their discount just isn't as high as another companies. But they don't pay the same amount that you would to ship an item.

After market cooler I bought for like $10 AR. I don't remember the brand but it is just a basic heatsink/fan. Much larger than the stock cooling with the E6750 though which would idle at 30+ for my OC of 3.2GHz.

It actually took a few times of taking the AM Cooler off and putting it back on with some Arctic Silver to finally start working well. At any rate maybe I will just stick with the E6750 then.

This type of thing comes up often I think. Your temp monitor program is probably if not definitely off. Maybe as much or even more then 10C. Even still, 30C would be really nice for a 3.2ghz OC at idle. I would expect like 40C under load. This is unless your computer is in some absurdly cold meat locker 🙂

Your CPU could take you into Nehalem just fine.

Apologies for going off the thread topic...

The current monitor I am using is CoreTemp 0.95. Currently it is registering:
Tjunction: 85C°
Core #0: 19C°
Core #1: 18C°

I am not sure how accurate it is but even +10 is great considering I dont mind pushing it under load as high as 60C° - 67C°.

I get a discount, too. 😀

But, let's be real. When companies like FedEx and ZZF offer "free" shipping, the shipping cost is just included in the item price.

$9 ground shipping isn't "high." They have other costs as well, boxes, peanuts.

Try downloading the newer version of Coretemp 0.99.1 I had a similar issue when I had an E6750; the Tjunction value for the E6750 which the .95 version of coretemp uses is off and it causes incorrect readings.

Thanks Corpun that fixed the readings. It is now idling at 33C° which seems more accurate.

Running Prime95 on both CPU's is peaking at 56C° so I could probably still get some more frequency out of my E6750.

Not much more though, but some...

56C is pretty hot Nish. I wouldn't push much further, that's me though and I know very little 😛 Still, 56C under prime95 probably means about 50-52C under anything remotely reasonable, like a game or encoding.
