Got this from someone in the OS forum. Seems like you can't go wrong for only 7 bucks. Shipping for 2 of them to NJ was about $6. This will be a good solution to my dual booting woes! Also it says ATAT 33/66/100, anyone know if it should work with an ATAT 133 controller? 'm thinkg as long as you have the right cable it shouldn't be a problem.

Enjoy!

these are pretty nice trays... i have 3 of them in my Antec S1030 home server. One for the boot drive, two with my RAID1 drives in them. They are very solid (for plastic trays) and look nice when you have a bunch of them in a server. I paid just under $25 each at Fry's for them....
Just remember not to unlock the drives while your computer is on.... Not that I've done that of course... Heh... I've, uh, heard about it happening... Yeah...

If you use these enclosures, can you post hard drives (size and ATA mode) you are using?

A couple years back, I bought similar device (eagle nest) from ubid. It listed compatible to any ATA-33 drives. But when I receive the device, the manual said it is only compatible up to 6GB drive.

I am gonna use it with an 80 GB ata-100 drive.

TIA.

Not trying to scare anyone, but I bought about six of these, and 3 of them broke already. There were a few times when I got new drives, and swapped some with other so I can put them in these enclosures. Well, all of a sudden, they don't work. The lights in the front don't go on, and they become like useless. I try to return them, but it was after 30 days already. I still have a few, but I hesitate to use them now. Probably just my bad luck... but yeah... when I have sometime, I try the other 3 I have....

That sounds exactly like something I would do. In your best estimation, if say you did do something like that, would that fry the drive? Not to say that you did do it, but if you did do you think it would fry the HD? ALSo does anyone know if these will be compatable with ATA 133? I just got a HD and 133 card comboe and I hope that it works with it.

Not a BAD price, nor bad enclosures, but I have one of these (got it for $10 online), and later on found a bunch of other semi-nicer enclosures cheaper at computer shows for about $8. You can probably easily find them at the same price at shows as that seemed to be the going rate...

These drive canisters are cheap -- both in price and quality -- but they do work as advertised. Be warned, however, that they are constructed entirely out of cheap plastic and don't compare to the industrial strength metal cannisters that you often see in servers, RAID arrays, etc.

I've had no problems with any size or type drive I've installed in these, including 2.5" and 3.5" hard drives, as well as an IDE-based CompactFlash reader with a number of different size CF cards.

Lastly, with regard to coupons, there's a 10% off coupon that can be used on non-sale items at ComputerGeeks. You can find it here.

kevman, apparently, from what i've heard, unlocking the drive while the computer is on does not fry the drive... not that i'd know personally... heh...

Tried using similar enclosures to swap between OS (Win XP and Linux - Mandrake 8.1). Works great, but the weakest part that I noted was the 40-pin plug and the ribbon cable. I was trying out different drives and broke the portion where the plug and cable meet. :disgust: Paid about $11 ...... each. :|

i have about 4 of these myself. it was back when compugeeks ran a sale on them with 10% off with credit card. i havent had any problems with them breaking. just a problem if the key isnt turned all the way off and the key falls out . it doesnt want to go back in. so you have to push the lever in once you have the drive out.

I have been using this type of device for years now and have only
good things to say about the idea.

It's great for me for experimenting with different OS's.
I also use a 3 gigger that I set up with Windoze. Set up sharing on
it and then transfer all my important data over to it.

I usually drop to DOS and run a batch file that I have created. It makes
a fine backup device for me. I then store this hard disk in the garage
or in a remote location. I also back this up to a CD writer too.

Since mine are old they will not support ATA100 but are sufficient for
what I need them for.

I especially like them because I can experiment with different distributions of Linux using them. (Have quite a few 3 and 4 gig HDs around).

I have a few of these that I got from CompGeeks some time ago.
They are worth $7.49 if you need/want them. However:

A) They are very cheaply made. As noted, 100% plastic construction.
The "lock" is very cheasy, as is the plastic generic "key" that
goes with it. The lock does not hold the key very well, so you will
have to store the key somewhere else. That's a bad thing because the
only way the enclosure will work is with the lock set...Lose the key,
and you will have to waste time breaking the enclosure to get the
drive out.

B) I think they're really ugly. Useful, but ugly.

C) These don't come close, NOT CLOSE, to the quality of a good removable
drive enclose. The good ones have metal construction, a better
quality locking mechanism, etc. They also, in general, look better.
And cost a lot more. The ones being sold here will do the job, but
that's it.

CompGeeks has had these (or very similar) for sale for the same price
(or very similar) for months and months and months...No need to rush
on these unless you want/need them now...

Thanks Kwad, I think that pretty much answers all of my questions about it.

Thought I'd add my two cents: I bought a bunch of these (I think it was these) way back when and I'm very satisfied with them. They came in handy when we were upgrading our linux box - quick way to swap the source (old) / destination (new) drives or move them to a windows box temporarily. Also great for dragging the hard drive in my girlfriend's computer down to my monster for an occasional full backup. I have an enclosure in every one of my computers (4 in all) My only complaints:
  1. fan died in 1 - no biggy, just stopped using that one
  2. too large for some of the bays of one of my cases - the enclosure was hitting up against some of the taller components (the memory I think) on the motherboard - probably just a bad combo of case, motherboard and hard drive enclosure, but this prevented me from putting 2 of these in that case.
  3. keys falls out - I would rather simply leave the key in cuz I keep losing them - in which case I open one of the new boxes and dig the keys out of there - but I will eventually run out of new boxes to steal keys from :)
  4. If you swap alot, unless you connect all the enclosures all masters or all slaves or all cable-select, you're going to have to keep mucking with the master/slave jumpers on the drive as you move them between systems.
All in all though I like them. Still, I want hot-swappable hard drives that can still have decent bandwidth (USB 1.1 - no, firewire - maybe, USB 2.0 maybe).

I bought three of these enclosures, one of which I mounted externally on my Panasonic Showstopper as shown here. My only gripe is that the fan, a T&T MW410M12S is rather noisy when used in a living room environment. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good, quiet 40x40x10mm fan?

to kevman and others: i was certain that these were the exact same trays i got at fry's, but i must be wacked in the head... mine are the inclose brand, and look slightly different.... Here's a picture of my home server showing the drive trays The top drive is my boot drive, and the bottom two are my RAID1 drives.

Thanks! I think the price for a tray and sled setup was around $25 each, and extra drive sleds were $11.99 or something like that. Not as cheap as The 'Geeks, but apparently a little nicer....
