In terms of web cam quality, the best are (in no particular order), Kodak, Intel PC and PC Pro, and some model I can't remember from an issue a few months ago from PC World (print edition). I do remember the article saying that if you can shell out the $249 that it's the BEST web cam available in terms of quality.

I would personally purchase the Intel PC Camera, I've heard nothing but good things about it. Right now you can buy 2 Intel PC Cameras for $80 after MIR

As always it's a good idea to read the reviews at CNET.com also pay attention to the users opinions (they usually provide good real advice on products reviewed).

Here is some information for the mis-informed.
This information comes from a 3Com Home Connect
PC Digital Camera 0776, Product Number 003718-10
Main Board PC number 1.012.0776-B, "optical head"
part number 1.012.0777-B.

The CCD sensor used the camera is a Sharp LZ2413H.
Again, to clarify it is the LZ2413H and *NOT* the LZ2423H!
1/4" 270k-pixel CCD Area Sensor.(512 horizontal x 492
vertical). This sensor has thirty optical black pixels
two on one side and 28 on the other. 512x492= 251k, the
thirty black "pixels" are accounted for under the 270k
(add thirty to the 512 number=542 x 492= 266k (guess it
depend on if you call a k 1000 or 1024-in electronics it
is 1000, btw).

details at http://www.sharpsma.com/products/ccd/html/pc_cameras.html

FYI, 640x480= 307K, for which a 320k sensor would be used
for true 640 x 480.

True resolution tests will also show you that the camera
is not truely 640x480, and that lossy compression schemes
are used, which is the reason I investigated.

Repeated inquiries to 3Com have produced zero response.

In my personal opinion, I had the Intel Pro camera sitting
side by side with this 3Com. As much as I *hate* to say
it, the Intel camera looked much better, and much sharper,
with not as much loss, even after working with *all* of the
settings and getting the latest drivers/software. The
3Com camera would be more pleasing to someone who was not
interested in details, liked warmer tones, and liked their
pictures soft. The 3Com cam does a bit better in low
light and has better response in near-IR, allowing you
to see objects that are hotter than 400F, once you remove
the plastic blue IR-cut filter.

I had the Intel Pro camera sitting side by side with the quickcam pro, and no doubt:
As much as I hate to say it too, the Intel was really better.
Better colour, less noisy and sharper.

One thing I must admit though: the Intel software is really slow and that may be in part because of the higher resolution.

I really try to boycott Intel after they started to embedded a "privacy code" in the Pentium III's and plan to do so woth other items too.

But the camera was really better and had no "i.d." code.

By the way, that $30 logitech rebate isn't going to work on this camera, or any camera. It's a $10 rebate on up to three cameras, for a MAXIMUM of $30...

it's $10 for the Express, $20 for the Web or Home, and $30 for the Pro.

Limit of 3 rebates per product

ZeroBurn: I stand corrected. Looks like they changed (or clarified) the terms... before it appeared it was $10 a cam, $30 max.

It's unlikely we'll have a UPC code to send them from this deal, but if we do, it becomes mega hot. Really, they should accept the rebate here, since obviously this is some arrangement with SpotLife.com and has little to do with Logitech.

ZeroBurn - Good choice, neither is perfect but people will usually agree that the quality of the pictures and the software bundle is better with the Intel PC camera.

i don't care about software as much as hardware, software can always be improved but the hardware is what you're really stuck with i think.

Only thing I have to warn you about this deal... There are 2 Quick Cam Pro USB models... White and brown bezel. The difference in speed and quality is notisable, I have both. Now the other major difference... The white bezel is NOT supported under Win 2000!! The brown bezel is. I bought the white bezel at a steal for $40 when OM had it misadvertized and pricematched it at BB. I had checked the Logitech web site prior to the purchase and they said the new drivers for Win 2K would be out soon. THey never cam out, so the new camera in the box collected dust. In August they stated they would never have a driver for the white bezel and they put up the first Win2K drivers for the Brown bezel. I called the company and all they would do after much moaning and groaning is they would upgrade to the brown bezel if I shipped my New white bezel with a $30 check and money for the shipping back for the brown bezel. Major BS... Another way to get a deal on the brown bezel is to do what I did, I searched the web and found it for $75, did a PM at Staples and the $30 rebate which made it $45. About the cost of shipping my old one and trading it. If you have a choice go with the brown bezel....

Just my 2 cents

Looks like JustDeals has now raised the price ont he QuickCam Pro to $59.95!!! (Even though their home page still says it's $39.95.) They've also dramatically shortened the description.

I assume no one who ordered one has received anything yet.... hope this isn't bait and switch....

Would this deal be valid?

Buy 2 Quickcam pros from Buy.com for $76.95 = $153.90
Apply $30 off $150 coupon
Get $25 off $100 rebate from Logitech
Get $30 rebate for each camera from Spotlife (need a friend to reg the other quickcam)

Total cost after rebates and coupons is $38.90 or $19.45 each

Staples came through on the PM again, I took the homepage with the $34.95 price in and they pricematched it on the spot. The Windows ME freebies after rebate are alos a really good deal too. I've gotta quit coming to this forum, it is breaking me.

Well, I was starting to get worried... I emailed JustDeals to see when my order would ship, but no response. Tried calling, but never any answer. But I did just get this message:
----------------------------------------

Dear Valued Customer,

Please be advised that your order has been shipped via UPS. The tracking
number is ##############.

We would appreciate very much a positive feedback from you to CNET
concerning this order transaction.

Thank you very much for your business. We are looking forward to doing
business with you again soon in the future.

Sincerely,

Justdeals.com, Inc.

---------------------------

So, who knows. I checked and it's a legit tracking #, so hopefully I'll get the cameras. I see they've now upped the price all over their site to $59.95, but there's also no longer any mention that it's OEM.

Just thought i would let you all know.

I called staples.com and tried to do the pricematch, and after waiting about 20 minutes, she told me that they were out of stock.

shot that idea out of the water

killabeas - To my knowledge the only differences between the Intel PC Camera and the Intel PC Camera Pro pack is:

1) The Intel PC Camera Pro Pack has video in. I guess so you can import from your camcorder or VCR?
2) The Intel PC Camera Pro Pack has more software.

Personally since I don't need the video in (I only intend to use it for video chat with scantily clad women overseas and for taking eGay pictures of pictures) nor the extra software I'll save the extra $ and just get the regular PC Camera. Otherwise hardware wise I have been told that they are exactly the same.

CompUSA had a great deal, two for $80 after rebate. Not sure if that has expired yet or not.

The rebate does not apply towards OEM quickcams. They do not have a upc code on their packaging.
