Well, I just placed an order for a QuickCam Pro USB at JustDeals.com for $34.95 -- about half what everyone else is charging for these units.

I know nothing about JustDeals, other than that they appear to only have a store front on Cnet's Store.com service (similar to Yahoo! shopper). So, certainly, that doesn't make me feel good. But I figured why not.

This is an OEM version, which means no retail box, but they claim it's new. The parallel version is $5 more.

I've seen this cam in action, and the quality is amazing. It's one of the only Web cams that actually delivers 640 x 480, and it's the best cam logitech makes.

I'll report back if/when I get my order from Justdeals. Note that shipping from these guys is a flat $8.95 on whatever you order. I didn't really see anything else there I wanted.

There are MANY webcams out there, which deliver that resolution.
I had the QuickCam Pro USB, but then got the intel, and it was definetly better. The intel uses a CCD element.
I could sell the QuickCam Pro USB on eb_ay (why is this word forbidden??).
But even better than that was the 3Com, but that is very expensive.

Healey: Most commercial sites iwth Web cams aren't using something this simple, but almost all of the "fish cams" and dorm cams you see people set up are using something of Logitech-level quality. The quality on this one is far better than the quality on the original WEb cams (now called "Express" I think). If you're on a high-speed connection, you can get a great quality picture running in a large window.

I'm not worried about the quality of the images, but more the quality of the merchandise from these jokers.

Attention: That's just not correct. Most of hte manufacturers have one camera in their lineups (always the highest end) that runs at 640 x 480. All of those dlinks and most of the logitechs and such are all much lower resolution.

As far as I know, only 3Com's top of the line HomeConnect model runs at 640 x 480, and it's like $125. At that price, I'll take my chances with this one.

I'm in. Thanks MB. After looking at cams for awhile, I know this is a good deal, OEM or not. I recently ordered the low end Express because I just didn't want to spend the money on the "nicer" cams. Well, I'll be giving that as an Xmas present and keeping this for me.

Why do you say that? Not only have I checked it myself before purchasing the Intel cam, but I opened it later and saw the CCD element. It has actually more than 640x480 pixels but is reduced to that standard.
I don't know about the dlinks and have not mentioned it.

I suggest to you to first educate yourself about the facts, before stating what is correct and what not.

The price mentioned here is definately a good deal.
My intention was only to inform about the fact that there are indeed several webcams with 640x480 pixels.
And about the differences between some of them as I had the opportunity to play around with the 3 mentioned ones.

Well I got my QuickCam Pro USB back in the Value America days for probably next to nothing... anyway, I'd have to say that I was a little dissapointed with not necessarily the quality (it takes great stills) but with the frame-rate. You'd that that its being USB would help out a LOT with that, but it goes a lot slower than I would have liked. Granted if you stick it down on insanely small resolution you can get about 30 frames/second or more, but the medium size is only so-so and 640 is way to slow to even show any moderately speeded movement. I guess I'll have to get one of those cams with a video capture card or something.

The 3Com HomeConnect, which is a Vista Imaging cam (www.vistaimaging.com) DOES true 640x480 and the 3Com HomeConnect is probably the best CCD webcam out there, but it does cost you $120(-20 rebate). I'm buying a QC Pro USB frm these people for my g/f to see how well the Logitech compares, but I've been told by people who hands on both, the 3Com is far superior in terms of adjusting the lighting conditions (it works in virtually zero light, ie; light from my monitor is enough to make a picture come up very nice)

Rats, missed it! Appears to be gone.

And don't expect to be broadcasting from your house at 640x480. You need high end broadband to go that high, not the 768/128 DSL that I have. I forgot the exact numbers, but I think you need 768 going out to do 640x480.

if you guys missed the deal, you can catch a slightly cooler one by snagging one at onvia.com i guess, it's about $81 there and with rebate it's $50

not quite as good but i'm guessing justdeals had a typo because that was a HELL of a price. shipping alone was like $9 extra though, and with tax the final price was all the way up to around $45. the rebate took it down to $15 though. just giving you a comparison

I don't think that rebate will work with this oem product. The part number that I received in my confirmation email doesn't appear on the list of qualifying products.

That doesn't mean I won't try anyway though.

attention: Hey, chill out. You misread my post. I wasn't suggesting the Intel HomeConnect cam wasn't 640x480. Of course it is (in fact, I noted that it is in my post.) I was challenging your suggestion that 640x480 is common for Web cams. It isn't, and I stand by that. Only a few web cams do 640x480, and they're all high end and expensive.

And if you're arguing that the $125 Intel cam is better than this $35 cam, I think we all agree with you. If I were interested in spending that kind of money, I'd certainly buy the Intel. But for 1/4 the cost, this camera will do just fine.

I agree with the earlier post about not being able to get a high frame rate at 640 x 480. My friend had his set to medium resolution, and it still was pretty far from live action. But it was much better than the little clip-on jobs that deliver half the size at the same speed.
