What does "DVD-rom capability" give you?

And how can you tell if you're getting the most recent version if you order for Buy.com or somewhere else??
If you buy from a place like BestBuy, chances are it's going to be the latest version (3001-R, which is what you want, it has the revised laser). Buy.com is a tough choice, they probably dont' move as many ps2's as other stores, so their units might be older. I'd still guess you're going ot get the most recent version.

Can you link me to one of those auctions? I'm guessing it's just lies to get you to buy from that particular dealer, as the ps2 DVD remote does not require a memory card to function at all. You plug it into a controller port and use it like any other remote. All the ps2's should function the same as far as DVD's go. The newer laser is more reliable, that's the only major change.

Edit: I just found an auction like you mentioned. It's a load of crap, any ps2 will play DVDs (with or without the remote), you don't need a memory card to watch them.

Right now ebworld is selling the PS2, brand-new, with an extra Sony Dual Shock 2 controller for $199. I'm pretty sure that they don't charge tax either. If somebody can stack another coupon on top of that, you could have yourself an extremely hot deal. I think there is a $50 rebate when you buy the system and an extra accessory, yet I'm having trouble finding it. If someone finds that you could have a brand-new Playstation 2, with 2 controllers, for only $150 + shipping.

<-------- Remembers when Playstation 1 used to cost $300!!!!

Microsoft drops prices on xbox to $200

Who will win? Sony!
Why? Because it costs Microsoft so much more money to produce the xbox. They were losing money when they were offering the xbox for $300. Sony can justify its price reduction because it just found a new way to reduce ps2 cost: combining the CPU and the GPU into one unit (less material = less money spent). Xbox is forced to drop its price to compete.

With all these budget ps2 games (GT3, Twisted Metal Black, Onimusha1...) flooding the market..plus the $100 price drop, the PS2 is going to drown out the competition.

I was considering buying an Xbox in addition to my PS2 but with all these good news favor of PS2, I'm better off saving my money for more PS2 games.

Sounds like you've bought into exactly what Sony wants you to think, that now microsoft are the baddies since Sony jumped the gun and lowered their price first, when, only last week they were still saying they wouldn't lower their price.

So, why lower the price? Well, you know sony dosen't want to have the most expensive console, especially when their addons come out. Since, they need these addons to have the things that the xbox has built in(broadband and hard drive).

I'll wait for the xbox drop, which has already been speculated without any microsoft lying, and maybe get that for $199.

Gee....when I was tipped off (incorrectly it turned out) that the PS2 was gonna drop to $200 after Xmas, a lot of trolls here were screaming that I be banned and that Sony would NEVER drop the price so soon.

Well, lookee here...they cut the prices and now the time is right to buy...an X-Box.

Dollar for dollar, it's the best box around and if you aren't a total PSX/2 ho, it's a better place to start.

Hmm..too bad I already have a PS2. It's a great deal though.

I'm still trying to figure out if I should buy an XBox or not; there just aren't that many games that I want for it.

Can you tell if ts a 3001-R without opening the box? I'll probably end up getting it from BestBuy anyway if they every send me the $10 coupon code for pre-ordering Oceans11.

But then again I still have a $75 coupon from Buy.com from the Vaio fiasco. Decisions, decisions...

Got my PS2 about 40 days ago knowing they would drop it at E3 (it was obvious!). $100 price guarantee from American Express and I gamed for 40 days for $199. A winner is me! Also must price guarantee the controller and the memory cards ($10 dollars each ;) which I think was the minimum).

Also for those that dont know, the GC controllers have dropped price EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY to $24.99 as expected. Wavebird will now be $34.99.

Ok back to RE.

If you guys already bought the ps2 at Best BUy and got the replacement plan... just call it up and tell them it's skipping cd's or something lame and get your 300$ back and get another ps2 and some games.

They're talking about the official Sony PS2 DVD Remote. The Sony remote has a lot of buttons and is easier to use than most of the third party DVD remotes. However, to use all the buttons on the Sony DVD remote, you need to load the new version of the DVD player software from the CD provided with the remote (the version in the PS2 rom is older and can't be upgraded) onto a memory card and power up the PS2 with the memory card plugged in. I think it takes 1-2MB of an 8MB card. The new DVD player software is supposed to give a little better quality and play some DVDs that the old software had trouble with.

The newer PS2 revisions have the new DVD player software already burned into their ROM chips so there is no need to download the software to a memory card when using the Sony DVD remote.

I think that Sony started putting the new DVD player software into the ROMs with the 3.0001 R models. Just look for the white sticker on the top of the PS2 box. No need to open it.
