If you buy from a place like BestBuy, chances are it's going to be the latest version (3001-R, which is what you want, it has the revised laser). Buy.com is a tough choice, they probably dont' move as many ps2's as other stores, so their units might be older. I'd still guess you're going ot get the most recent version.Originally posted by: icecube
I just went over to fleabay to see what these were selling for over there:
I found that some auctions brag that they are selling the most newly-released Playsation 2 (ver 3.0001) that has DVD-rom capability and allows you to use the DVD remote without having to download an additional memory card.
What does "DVD-rom capability" give you?
And how can you tell if you're getting the most recent version if you order for Buy.com or somewhere else??
Can you link me to one of those auctions? I'm guessing it's just lies to get you to buy from that particular dealer, as the ps2 DVD remote does not require a memory card to function at all. You plug it into a controller port and use it like any other remote. All the ps2's should function the same as far as DVD's go. The newer laser is more reliable, that's the only major change.
Edit: I just found an auction like you mentioned. It's a load of crap, any ps2 will play DVDs (with or without the remote), you don't need a memory card to watch them.
