Sony cuts price of PlayStation, PS2

(Rewrites with official confirmation, adds Sony interview)

By Ben Berkowitz

LOS ANGELES, May 13 (Reuters) - Sony Corp said on Monday it cut the U.S. price of its PlayStation 2 game console by one-third and halved the price of its older PlayStation One, a preemptive move expected to touch off a round of discounting by rivals.

Effective immediately, the PS2 will cost $199 in the United States, down from $299, while the first-generation PSX will sell for $49, down from $99. Prices for accessories and extra controllers will also be reduced, Sony said in a statement.

Sony will also consider future price cuts on its game software, an executive said.

The cut comes as analysts, game publishers and retailers anticipate that Microsoft Corp (NasdaqNM:MSFT - News) will cut the price of its competing Xbox console, also currently $299, at the industry's Electronic Entertainment Expo, the major video game trade show, next week.

"It's not surprising that they want to get in front of Microsoft," said UBS Warburg analyst Mike Wallace. "Why else would Sony do it now?"

Sony said it was making the price cut now, as opposed to September as had been expected by some industry watchers, because it wanted to build momentum at the new discounted price well in advance of the year-end holiday season, the make-or-break period for video game sales.

"This way we can have some time so we can plan out the rest of the year with our retailers," Kaz Hirai, president of Sony Computer Entertainment of America, told Reuters.

At $199, the PS2 will be priced the same as Nintendo Co Ltd's (7974.OS) GameCube, which does not have the DVD playback capabilities of the PS2 or as extensive a game library. The GameCube, like the Xbox, came out last November.

PS2 KEY TO SONY BOTTOM LINE

In early April, a senior Nintendo executive told Reuters the company would reconsider its GameCube pricing if Sony announced a price cut, especially to the $199 level.

Sony said last week it has sold more than 30 million PlayStation 2 units worldwide, giving it a more than 10-to-1 advantage over rival Microsoft in terms of installed game machines.

"We felt that, based on that great milestone, it was good for us and good for the platform to come up with a pricing announcement very close to that," Hirai said.

Sony earned an perating profit of 83 billion yen ($649 million) from its game division in the business year that ended in March, allowing it to post a net profit at a time when other consumer electronics makers were losing money because of the collapse in technology spending.

While the hardware is key for Sony, related software sales are just as important. The company publishes a number of games for its own console, which sell for up to $49.99.

Sony's Hirai said game software price may now be under consideration as well: "I think that as we move on the pricing for the hardware, I think we need to take an aggressive look at the software pricing too."

Another part of the PS2 strategy has been its expansion capabilities.

While the console does not have the built-in networking capabilities of the Xbox, Sony will release an adapter in August that will allow users to add online gameplay. Nintendo announced similar adapters for GameCube on Monday.

Sales of video game hardware, software and accessories topped $9 billion in the United States last year. Analysts and industry executives have said the industry is in the first year of a multi-year growth cycle driven by the three next-generation consoles.

I wonder if the PSone's LCD screen is going to come down in price... Now that would be a killer deal the PSone & screen for $100...

If you want a lil incentive Ebgames is offering the PS2 with an extra dual shock controller for 199.00 so you get 2 controllers instead of one...

get the XBOX NOW...buy it from BB (or CC) and get them to pricematch the new price by 110%.

That way you pay 299-110=189!

That's what i might do!

I just went over to fleabay to see what these were selling for over there:

I found that some auctions brag that they are selling the most newly-released Playsation 2 (ver 3.0001) that has DVD-rom capability and allows you to use the DVD remote without having to download an additional memory card.

What does "DVD-rom capability" give you?

And how can you tell if you're getting the most recent version if you order for Buy.com or somewhere else??

Sony drops price on ps2 to $200
Microsoft drops prices on xbox to $200

Who will win? Sony!
Why? Because it costs Microsoft so much more money to produce the xbox. They were losing money when they were offering the xbox for $300. Sony can justify its price reduction because it just found a new way to reduce ps2 cost: combining the CPU and the GPU into one unit (less material = less money spent). Xbox is forced to drop its price to compete.

With all these budget ps2 games (GT3, Twisted Metal Black, Onimusha1...) flooding the market..plus the $100 price drop, the PS2 is going to drown out the competition.

I was considering buying an Xbox in addition to my PS2 but with all these good news favor of PS2, I'm better off saving my money for more PS2 games.

Um, no video game company, PERIOD, makes any profit margin whatsoever on their consoles. Sony is not making profit on the PS2 @ $300 and certainly won't be @ $200, even with whatever the hell you just said. Microsoft isn't making money either but they're a giant - they can afford to. With both of them dropping prices, the people who win most are the consumers.

Passivex, no offense but you have not been reading the news lately or even the first post on this topic.... "It's not surprising that they want to get in front of Microsoft," said UBS Warburg analyst Mike Wallace. "Why else would Sony do it now?" It has been rumored for some time that Microsoft was gonna cut prices on the X-Box. Sony did this only to combat Microsofts move. And while it may be cheaper now for them to make PS@s, it is also gonna be cheaper for Microsoft to make X-Box as they will be moving from Intel to AMD to supply the X-Box's CPU. I personally would get both if I could get them for $150 and get mod chips :). But I may go with the X-Box. The games look better, and they will only get better as time goes on. Forget saving money to get more PS2 games. Get the X-Box, better DVD (though you should get a full on DVD player.. APEX anyone), built in HD and Broadband capabilities. Getting the PS2 up to the X-Box in terms of features will set you back $100 (modem and hd). So in the end you are not saying much money. I personally like both systems as they have their advantages and disadvantages. I still prefer the Dreamcast (it's still a great system), but as Sega is getting more and more behind the X-Box, I may end up there.

Nicely said. The consumers (US) are the winners in all of this. Thanks to the price cut I can probably find an X_Box or PS2 on "E" Bay for $150 or less. Looks like my Dreamcast is gonna have a new friend come the summer time.
