They are normally $80 a pair at Circuit City, and they get great reviews. So, this is a hot deal!

Do you need an amp to drive these for computer use? Any recommendations?

Actually they're $99.98 per pair online at Circuit City...so this is definitely a good deal.

You beat me to it jokersmoker! I was going to post the exact same hot deal!

Oh well, I picked up a pair to match my R30's I purchased earlier.

Now you just gotta find a hot deal for us on a good center-channel speaker to match :)

You wanna post some links? Most audiophiles (myself included) view polk as really respectable speakers, and usually an excellent value for the price. A steal at these prices. :)

Ok, I broke down and ordered a pair, dang this forum. $71 with shipping and tax is still a great deal. These will be nice rears with my RT7s for my "temporary" setup until I can afford some monitors or something better. Now somebody find a nice voice-matched center channel for these. :)

Yes you need a receiver to drive these. If you're trying to keep costs down, sherwood makes nice receivers for cheap. Best buy used to have a pretty nice 5.1 sherwood for about $100... not sure if they still have it. I think it had optical input too, so if you have a card with digital out it would be a good combo. You could also get a really cheap card (chaintech AV-710 at newegg for $30-ish) with optical out if you're looking to go get away from computer speakers.

Outpost has great deals on the R50s and R30s too right now. It seems the only thing they don't have is a nice center on sale to go with them. Maybe they're getting rid of their cherry finished inventory?

A set of R50s up front with a pair or two of R15s or even R30s would be pretty sweet... just need a matching center.

Don't say Polks are great just because you and other 'audiophiles' own them and think they sound great. They are infact incapable of taking rated wattage (although not many, unless you're a true audiophile and have an a/c receiver or h.o. receiver, will find this out) and better quality can be had for less.

Just take one apart and you'll see why they're cheap. They rattle at certain harmonic frequencies, they are foam pad (as in a shipping-quality pad) filled to prevent vibration and hold bandpass resistance and are usually made in China, which says a lot about quality control...I mean, speakers are delicate instruments, which should be made in stringent environments (Japan, Germany, USA, Canada)

Swans are made in China, I wouldn't say they're cheap.
Chinese quality control have improved much since centralized planning went under.

That applies to optics as well, in recent years the quality of stuff coming out of China has gone way up. There is still some junk that comes out of there, but the same applies to any manufacturer or location. You can no longer say that Japan > China in all cases.

And I'm not talking about just personal opinion on these speakers I'm talking about actual reviews and I'm yet to find a single one that claims they are not a well built speaker.

http://www.hometheatermag.com/...minstallation/105polk/
http://www.audiorevolution.com/equip/rm6500/
http://www.soundstage.com/vide...olkaudio_ht_system.htm

I'm not saying they are the best speakers out there by any stretch, if I had 20-40 grand to put into a system I seriously doubt there would be any Polk in it, but in general they are a well built speaker that more often than not outperforms anything else in the same price range.

Oh and as far as not holding up to power ratings that is highly subjective. Most amps don't put out anything near what they're rated at and if you drive any speaker into distortion then it's going to self destruct. It's more likely that you would blow one by over driving it with a cheap amp than from "too much" power.

looks like a good deal considering outpost is selling the black ones for $130.

i'd be all over these if I didn't already have a home theater.

The Polks are decent for the price you pay. What audiophile speaker are you planning on getting for $50? Please. For a fun non-demanding HT, I think they are fine. The R30's go deep enough in my room - I don't feel the need for a sub. Good enough for a fun HT. I would probably get a R15 for center channel rather than a horizontal mtm due to dispersion issues.

not bashing this $50 deal, per se, but i do second the claim that polk makes sub-par speakers for the price in general. i wouldn't say they're down there with sony's (sinfully bad consumer audio products). i actually saw and listened to these at fry's the other day. the midrange is almost non-existent. then again, i'd never really buy bookshelvf speakers over floorstanding towers unless i have issues with space and er.... money.

however, if you must buy something in this price-range, i would recommend taking a look at the Acoustic Research PS2052s. Crutchfield (or through Amazon.com if you prefer) actually has them onsale now for $50 + $5.99 shipping. You may even get the "scratch and dent" (tolerable cosmetic defects, would presume) for $40. here's a review of the PS2052. you can also find the R15 reviews on the same site.

I really don't think you can be too demanding at this price range. The polks are subjectively probably as good as anything else you can get at this price. The fake cherry veneer and binding posts alone make it worth it. You couldn't build these speakers for $25 each yourself if you factor in the tools and time needed. The other appeal is B&M if you have a local fry's. I grabbed a pair for surrounds today. I don't like the way anything sounds at fry's fwiw, and their demo rooms are terrible, but cmon, $50...

Slim floorstanders with the same drivers have no real advantage over properly designed bookshelves. More of the same driver like you'll find in all these HT speakers will give you some more dynamics but at the expense of smooth dispersion. Anyway, for surrounds, these things should complement my R30's perfectly, and I'm sure many of you hoppedon the R30 deal a few weeks ago. I would have bought a third one for a center channel if they had let me.

I was ticked but I was going to get them for $49 a pair....

I called back, nicely told them they needed to sell them to me for that price I dont care if I have to wait months and months...

well sounds like im going to be waiting 3+ months, something like 360 units backordered and they got like 70 units last month and 70 3weeks later or some sh*t I dont know.. its a while

They second guy sounded like:
A: he wasnt very well trained
B: he was doing something hes not supposed 2 be doing selling them to me
or
C: pulling my leg and taking a fake order

I wasnt really rude, hope its A or B, I got an order number from him and went to say thank you for helping me out and... nobody was on the line

They're a decent set of speakers for surrounds. I finally got to really listen to them last night while watching the movie Collateral. They're crisp and provide decent mid's and good high's. Previously I bought a pair of R30 floorstanding speakers for my front surrounds that also act as LFE's because I don't have a sub hooked up. Now I'm waiting for a good deal on a center channel like a CSi3 or CSi5.

Are these only good as surrounds, or good enough as the two main speakers in a stereo setup?

And yes, deal is dead for now, they're up to $129 each! So, $25 each was one heck of a markdown! Right now the Polk deal at outpost is on the cherry R30s at $49 each, as posted in another thread.

They have no bass, so I doubt they'd be any good as the two mains. It wouldn't hurt to try though at $49 a pair. They'll come back on sale again soon I'm pretty sure. The R30 floorstanding speakers did after just about a week.

I just recieved my speakers 30 minutes ago. I put them in the front replacing my old Yamaha speakers. These aren't as efficient (I can crank the volume way past the point that my ears bled with the Yamahas and still be comfortable) but they sound great and are 1/4 the size. I'm happy with them. They look very nice too.
