I have a 2 year old plextor 12x10x32 and it has created 3000+ cdr and still working fine.
Are the newer ones 24x and above still made in Japan?

Nice price. I bought this drive 3 months ago for 111 with a $20 rebate that still hasn't shown up. I have heard that people have problems with Plextor rebates. It seems I am one of them too. (6-8 weeks for rebate and I am not even in the system, I need to call www.rebatestatus).

There is a clause on the rebate form that says not valid
for promotions/discounts, of which Plextor would most
likely say this is. Guess that is why Amazon doesn't
reference a rebate. Since Plextor covered themselves
and Amazon never advertized it, you may not see the
rebate at all -- think about whether you are willing to
buy this for $79.97+shipping before you do it.
Still is a good deal, but not quite as hot.

Actually I disagree. The plextor rebate form says that it's not valid with "other plextor promotions or discounts". I would argue that the sale price is an amazon promotion and not a plextor promotion. I would have expected Plextor's disclaimer to be pretty standard -- they want to prevent people from applying multiple rebates to a single product. In this case you are getting a sale on a product with a SINGLE promotion from plextor.

I remember sometime last year on Anatech, someone posted that they were denied a rebate from Plextor because they did not spend at least 159.00 for the drive. It was a great Dell deal if I remember correctly. I thought this was total bullsh1t since nowhere on the rebate form did it say a certain amount of money had to be spent for the CDRW drive. I hope this isn't my case or the cases of the people buying this Plextor CDRW.

Clarification on the rebate.

I sent in 2 rebates, one for a 12x and a 24x. It took some time before I actually got it, around 3-4 months, but it came. However, don't ask me about the minimum price purchase, thats another story...*evil grin*

Amazon Sucks!

They are still advertising the $89.97 price with no indication that quantities are limited, but they refuse to honor it. They said that they were out of stock and that their terms of service indicates that quantities are always limited, therefore they can continue to advertise a price with full knowledge that they are not honoring it. Nothing on the page says that it is out of stock, just that you can purchase a refurbished one for $135.00.

Rest assured that I will be contacting my attorney general's office.

If it doesn't have and "Add to Cart" (which it doesn't), that means you cannot buy it now.

Yes, they explained that, but (in the US), consumer protection laws place certain requirements on advertisers.

If they advertise an item at a certain price, they must honor that price. If quantities are limited, they must say so, otherwise they are obliged to give rainchecks to those that request them during the term of the sale. Also, if quantities are limited, they must have at least one available during the term of the sale. Amazon claims that they did state that quantities were limited, but that the statement appears in their terms of service, not on the ad itself.

It makes me angry that these (established) Web businesses believe that they are exempt from the consumer protection laws.

fr is right. It's just the way Amazon works. If it states limited quantities and you can't add it to your cart, it's Amazon way of saying it's out of stock. They aren't refusing to sell at that price, they just don't have any to sell so they won't take your order. Just put it in your wish list and have them e-mail you if and when it becomes available.

But does putting the item on the "wish list", lock in the same price from the sale, and allow you to buy it at that price when quantities become available again? (Does that act effectively like a "rain check"?) If not, then it's just plain pure bait-and-switch by Amazon, and is generally illegal according to most state's laws. It is my understanding that Amazon could then be brought to court by any number of states, if they do business in that state with consumers.

Your understanding of "bait and switch" may be incorrect. They have to be agressively advertising a product they are knowingly out of stock. Where's the add saying come buy it other than their own website which doesn't specifically state it's in stock? Having a product listed on their own website and refusing to sell it or lock it in at that price isn't bait and switch. There must be advertisements made in other places bringing you to the "store" after knowledge of it being out of stock and probably an attempt to sell you something else (the switch). I will grant you it states shipping USUALLY in 1-2 days on their site so it is misleading, but I dont' see the bait and switch.

Great drive for the money if you get the rebate, good deal even if you don't get the rebate. I paid about $110 each for two of these drives. I am fairly loyal to plextor. I have owned 3 plextor drives, and all have performed flawlessly. With that said, I would take a look at the faster 32x lite-on drives before I decide on the plextor because of rebate troubles some have had with plextor. The lite-on 32x drives usually can be had for about the same price after rebate (search to find the deals) and would be a tad faster.

Amazon is a good company, and you're intentionally misconstruing the item listing (not an "advertisement", just an item in their database) out of greed. Who's the "bastard" here?
