Progressive-scan output for seamless, flicker-free images on HD-ready TVs;

I'm not sure I agree with this statement.

I picked up one of these a few months ago and ended up returning it for two reasons:

1) The progressive scan wasn't flicker free. In fact, it was probably the worst progressive scan output I've ever seen. I know I'm more sensitive to flicker than most (at certain angles I can sometimes see the flicker in certain HDTV broadcasts, for instance)... but I really felt this was not done very well on this machine.

2) You couldn't really fast-forward/rewind mpeg-4 movies, which made watching large movies a bit of a pain if you had to stop in the middle of one for any reason. It would have been nice if the chapter seek buttons would have jumped at like 5 or 10 minute intervals or something.

So, I've been waiting for something better to come out... and for some reason the industry is adopting MPEG-4 support at a snail's pace.

Only thing is its not really mpeg-4 complient, as most real MP4 (nero or qucktime) codecs use ac3 for sound. Works good Progressive scan is great for me an most folks.

You can punch in a time and jump right to it. Not as convenient as having a button that'll jump in 5 or 10 minute intervals, but it does the job. And if you happen to stop a movie somewhere in the middle and note down the time, you can jump to the exact spot when you come back.

I agree with you there. Half a year ago, I figured we'd start seeing newer generation versions of the DVP642 in the near future. But now, it's still the only one of its kind around for under $70.

After some reading I hear people saying it's sorta loud. Is it as loud as the cyberhome ones? which was TOO LOUD, or are we talking not really noticeable?

mine was delivered from elsewhere earler this week.

the first thing I fed it was a cd-r with some xvid and divx movies. No problem.

burned stuff as a data cd using nero, and as long as the disc is finalized....plays everything so far.
It plays more than windows media player does...LOL

the remote is OK, not the best feel or best button placement, but OK.

I did not think it was loud. it made more noise than my sony, but nothing annoying that will ruin your dvd / divx experience.

So no more converting XVIDs? All I have to do is burn them as a Data Disc and it plays them?

Incidentally, what IS the difference between Divx and Xvid?

So even though this one claims to play Divx movies, it will also play Xvid, even though they use different codecs and this one's packaging doesn't explicitly state it plays Xvid?

It will play any MPEG-4 based codec. Sound is another issue, but I have yet to have a Divx movie not using a good standard sound codec.

This thing *is* loud. In fact, that is my only complaint. I'm glad my entertainment center has a glass door.
