Edit: What kind of box are you guys buying? The one I got today at Circuit City looks like the regular box but in the green area it has a sticker that says "TI4200 64MB Crushes TI 4200 128MB Performance | 500 MHz Memory Clock Rate" wheras they had some boxes that didn't have the sticker...

I think the "TI4200 64MB Crushes TI 4200 128MB Performance | 500 MHz Memory Clock Rate" sticker is found on the older versions (non 128MB). For a while the 64MB cards had 513MHz ram while the 128MB cards had 444MHz ram. I'd stay away from those. The card I got today from CompUSA (thanks to this thread) came with 128MB of 513MHz ram and did not have the sticker.

Yeah, I found a box without the sticker and its the 8x. What a relief, I really didn't want to keep buying and returning...

Confirmed.

CC has a more recent version where the 64mb inside is now AGP8X.
CUSA has an even MORE recent batch where either by mistake they got shipped 128's inside, or they are no longer bothering making the 64mb with 8x.

I went to CUSA today, and the box was exactly the same (just like pic in their flyer) as the CC one, but the CC one has that "ass kicking" comment.
Those CC ones are 64 8x's, and the CUSA ones are 128 8X's.

Just look at the box at CUSA. If it looks like their ad pic (no rant in lower right front) then it's a 128.

I just ran Quake3 Demo on the card, and got exactly the same results as I did with the 64mb.
Powerstrip shows it with the same speeds, 8X, but with 128mb.

I noticed something else about the card itself.
The 128 has the same amount of chips, but half are on the other side. Then they use double the heat sinks (same size).
On the 64 all the ram chips are on the same side with the CPU and the sinks barely cover the 4 chips under them. 8 ram chips/2 sinks. 128mb is 8 ram chips/4 sinks, spread to two sides.

If you take the card out of the box and spy sinks on both sides you have a 128.

Lucky I didn't send in the UPC for that $20 CC MIR yet. It's going back.

i just easily pricematched compusa's price at Circuit City to $99 + tax out the door (was 64mb version though)... so for those of u who just want 64 without rebate hassle, go for it. and supposedly u can return the card to CC without restocking fee if u want the 128

and i also got another 128mb at CompUSA

to help you find the correct version:

if there is a yellow sticker on the right that talks about the 64MB beating the 128MB version, thats the OLD VERSION that u DONT want to get. there is a 64MB card in there guaranteed

if it doesnt have the sticker, your chances are 50/50 that youll get a 128, and 75% that youll get an 8x card

another thing you might want to look for... CompUSA often puts a tiny red and white sticker with CUSA Sku number on the box. this sticker also has a DATE on it. at the CompUSA i went to, i saw cards marked 1/13 and cards marked 2/3. the later date you can get, the better chance to get the right card. i picked up a 2/3, anything in from February should be guaranteed 128mb.

and yes, CompUSA is running out of PNY's... one CompUSA i went to tried to give me another brand. but it looks like they are running same deal this coming week (as i saw from another anandtech post for next week's deals), so they should be getting more in, and the new ones should definitely be 128s! or so u can hope!

i had those different UPC codes too: 7 51492 22316 2 on card, 7 51492 21937 0 on box

but both my 128mb cards have ram chips on ONLY ONE side, so going by chips wont work

the cheapest this is going for on pricewatch is indeed $140, but this is an 8x version, running at 513mhz memory clock (as opposed to standard 444mhz for most 128mb cards) in addition to PNY brand name with lifetime warranty, and heatsinks on the memory chips. so you are saving $40 AT LEAST AND getting a BETTER product, and you are getting it NOW without shipping, and you are getting it retail with 30 day return convenience, and if u get it at Circuit City, u dont even have to worry about rebate (although whether 128mb version can be found at CC is unconfirmed)

could you lift the ram sink and see what ram you have on the 128mb version???

I lifted mine and saw samsung 4ns High Density chips. My board has 8 chips on single side and two ram sink on top only. This is exactly like the 64mb configuration that you have discribed. With the Samsung HD chips, I have pretty sure that i got the same ram as the other 128mb ti4200. On my box, there is not yellow sticker and the cusa stick is dated 2/3/03.

My 128MB 513MHz version also had a 2/3 CompUSA sticker on it.

My 128MB 513MHz card has ram and heat sinks on one side only too. I used to have a 64MB version and that had the ram and heat sinks on both sides. I think the earlier post might have had his discriptions backwards.

You guys are lucky you were able to pricematch fully at Cicrcuit City. They would only pricematch the Instant Savings. Somehow though the price went down to $125. But oh well, one less rebate to worry about...

I believe so as well ..looking now at the 64mb I pulled out of my comp...dbl sided ram sinks..the 128mb just picked up..single sided...hate CompUSA they idiots swore they did na have this but I caught an employee headed to the lockup..asked him to look and see..he came right back out with one..asked about the 60GB Compusa boxed Maxtors...he was like I dunno...:( ..Caught another one and had him open up their glass case lockup to look at their overpriced retail pkged XP 1800+ ..was JIUCB core ..was $129.99 in the store(tagged as such) and $119.99 online @CompUSA :(

Hmmmm, didn't know that about other 128's having ram all on one side.

Glad mine is split to 2 sides. Better because those heatsinks don't fully cover 4 chips like they do when covering only 2 chips. Better heat disipation and having the chips on 2 sides helps there too.

I didn't want to pull any sinks off to check my ram type. Not sure if that will void the warranty.

BTW, notice the sticker on the card says removing it voids warranty. Duh! With heat it will just fall off. And if you put it back on, how would they know? It is on a different location on the 2 cards I had. Just don't lose it.

As for the box, that "sticker" on the CC box is not a sticker. It is actually painted into the box as part of the whole box graphics. I have not heard of anyone yet getting a CC card that was 128mb.

I ran the rest of my tests that I ran before and in all of them the 128 card showed a slight improvement over the 64mb card. I di however have my UT GOTY freeze while running the practice session of team play. I never ran that mode with the other card so can't tell if it is driver, game, system, or card related. Heat would not be an issue unless the glue job on the sinks is crap. The 128 should be cooler with the split ram setup. I am running a 300watt Antec PS though. Not much else in the rig now except Santa Cruz card and 1 hard drive, 2 cd drives.

Be intersting to see if the 128's are still in these boxes after CUSA gets new batches in. That would confirm PNY isn't bothering with 64mb anymore. Wonder how they will sell those PNY boxes with 128mb AGP8X on them for $249 then?

Got the card and a 50 pack of khypermedia CD-Rs at Staples for $84 after tax (after $10 rebate on CD-Rs), hope I'll get the 128 meg version. Ingram Micro usually carries more recent stuff, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed :)

PS: Tried to PM it at CC earlier, but the sales drone told me they only PM manufacturer's rebates. That's at Henrietta, NY CC btw. Also, all their cards have the 64 meg ti4200 ad sticker on the boxes, guess they are the older 64 meg batch.

If your 128MB card has heat sinks on both sides, then there must be more than one version out there. Is your card's ram 513MHz or 444MHz? Mine is 513MHz. Maybe that is the difference.

I like the one sided heat sink design. The placement of the sinks allows for better heat dissipation since the air flow from the fan is over the sink. If there were sinks on the underside of the card, they would not have the benefit of "forced air" cooling.

Mine is 513. Same as the 64mb. :D

"but the sales drone told me they only PM manufacturer's rebates"

Hah! that's opposite the excuse my CC gave me. They said if it's a manufacturer's one available, it should be available for them too so I could still send one in. Only after not finding any on the web they pulled the give me old $20mir and extra $10 stunt.

Obviously the amount of the end sale price has them cringing. When I first mentioned PM they were YEAH WE DO THAT. Then when the drone saw the final price he had to do the manager check deal. After 3 trips back and forth to me and the manager, the formerly expired $20 mir was come up with.
No more concern of mine since it's going back, unless somebody wants to buy this tested 64mb one out.

The semiofficla for any store is that they would only do it if it is NOT a mfr rebate and is available only at another store. It makes if you think about it. Any other reasonign is pure BS to get rid of you. They just wait to hear which it is then say the opposite.

CC is suck, PM it at Staples instead. You'll get it directly from Ingram Micro.

Picked one up but havent opened it yet.
Does it have a DVI to VGA adapter so I can run dual display VGA? Will it run one flat panel in DVI and still have the other for vga out?
