Hot? Panasonic LF-D311SC Internal DVD-RAM/DVD-R Drive 299.00?

So this is my first post and I think this is a pretty good deal. Maybe I'm not reading in between the lines, but it appears to me that you can make/duplicate DVD's for real with this thing (and you can do it the old fashioned DVD-RAM way too since it's a combo drive). These guys even offer a package with free shipping and some cheap media for the drive as an upsell. They are in stock, and they ship the same business day, but I don't know if I'm missing something. Sure would be nice to burn some of these DIVX rips to a DVD and pop them in the ol' home theatre system.

I've been researching DVD-Burners for a few weeks now. Seems that the DVD-R format is the most compatible with current DVD Players. The problem with burning a DVD Movie to DVD-R is that the DVD-R can only hold up to 4.7GB. You can rip a DVD Movie but it may be greater then 4.7GB which means you will have to span it across multiple discs. If this Panasonic is the same as the QUE! Drive from CompUSA last week then $299 is not a bad price.

However the DVD-R that I'm looking for a "Hot Deal" on most is the Pioneer A03. Some advantages it has over the Panasonic is that is can burn a DVD-R at 2x instead of the 1x of the Panasonic and it is able to burn on DVD-RW media (rewritable). Keep in mind that the DVD-RW is NOT very compatible with DVD Players. Just my 2 cents 🙂

Sorry about that mispost. I am currently shopping for a DVD-ROM, but really would like any advice on whether now is the time to buy or not. I have found a Hitachi GF1000 for a little over a hundred dollars through PW, anyone know if tat is a good idea for a bargain drive? Will it burn DVD's playable on my home player? Thanks for any help!

I think the prices of the roms will go the same way as the cdroms when cdrw came out. Soon enough you'll be able to buy a dvd-ram or dvd-r for little more than the dvd-rom.

You might as well get a dvd-r even now though in my opinion. That's my plan (because I already have a dvd player for my home theatre system). I guess if you don't have any sort of dvd you should get that dvd-rom you're looking at now because the price won't drop but about 20 bucks over the next few months in my estimate. Even then though, you can get a dvd player for your HTS for a few bucks more than a dvd-rom.

That's my 2 cents!

What does the speed ratings on DVD-Rs drives mean? I hope 1x doesn't equal the same 1x as a CD-R. About how long would it take to burn a full 4.7GB DVD at 1x? how about 2x?

From my understanding 1x DVD-R takes about 50 minutes and 2x takes about 30 minutes. Don't know the exact kb/sec figures tho. Anyone?

As someone who has owned both the Panasonic and Pioneer drives, let me offer the following advice.
True the Pioneer drive does burn DVD's at 2x, BUT only a few name brand DVD's that have been certified by Pioneer. Apparently there is something in the firmware that recongizes various brands of DVD. That means if you buy the generic brand of DVD's that are currently around $1.99-$.3.99 you can only burn at 1x. Name brand DVD's such as Pioneer/TDK/Memerox are about $6.99-$8.99.

The Panasonic drive is extremely slow at burning, which is why I had to return it. A 1x speed the Pioneer will burn a complete DVD in about 50 minutes, the Panasonic would take over 2 hours to burn a DVD at 1x. It seemed to vary as once it took almost 4 hours!!! Avoid this thing like the plague. Read the opinions at eopinions.com.
