HOT - Outpost.com WD 80GB w/8MB cache $89.99 after MIR, plus possible surprise

Ordered 4 of these bad boys to build a fast RAID 5 array. Got 'em today, and the boxes say that they're 80GB 8MB cache 7200 RPM drives....

BUT...

Once I opened them, I found 100 GB 8MB 7200 RPM drives....in not just one or two boxes, but all four!

I don't know how long this is going to happen, or if it's going to be the same for everyone...but the deal at Outpost ends on 12/26.

Just opened up the 80GB SE's from Circuit City that I bought and they were both actually 80GBs ... Definitely cool that you got 100GB's in your outpost drives though!!!!

SCSIfreek, the box probably had the 80GB UPC, but WD gave him an extra 20 gigs on his HD. I remember when they were giving 20GB drives in 15GB boxes at Best Buy a looong time ago. You'd open it up and it had a piece of paper in it saying "Congrats, we've given you a 20GB drive for the price of 15GB" or so. However, YMMV.

Good Q. However, the labels say 80GB, and (as stated in a post above) they include a slip of paper basically saying you received free giggage. =)

But seriously, it's free space. My only concern was when I opened the first one that my RAID array would not benefit from this, because (as some of you know) RAID 5 arrays use the capacity of the smallest drive in the array. If I got 3 100's and 1 80, then my array would have been the same as having 4 80's. Of course, I'm sure I could find a way to return that one puny 80Gigger and order another 100Gig to complete the array.

Regardless, as I said, it's free gig. Price per gig is around $1 with that bonus....

However, I'm starting to think that WD is doing this a lot more now. A few friends of mine bought this 80GB WD SE drive at various locations, and told me that they got 100GB drives also. Of course, they didn't get the $40 MIR, and they paid $159+ for it <snicker>.

Take a shot! If you get an 80GB and aren't happy with it, I'm sure you can get (most of) your money back....

I bought one of the 80gb SEs at CC (the $120-$40 rebate deal) .......I am getting sweet benchmarks with PC Mark and Sandra! These are really good drives with a trusty WD 3 year warranty to boot! (WD makes good on them too , plus they have great CS!)

It does have a little sheet of paper that says "You have just received extra gigabytes of space at no extra cost!". Sooo...100GB drive for approx. $65 after $40 rebate and $26 MSN wallet. Very happy! The only thing I am wondering is if the 100GB version still has the 8MB cache....I hope so...

It will say (JB) in the Model# not BB that's your 8MB cache Model

Sorry it took so long to reply...kinda lost this thread a while ago.

Anyway, I have a Promise SX4000 RAID controller. It's a 4ch ATA RAID which supports RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 0+1, and RAID 5.

I think 3ware makes a card which does RAID 5 as well, but I'm pretty sure it's a lot more pricey.

3ware makes there 7500-4, 7500-8, or 7500-12 controllers that do raid 5. Price ranges from $300ish for the 7500-4 up to $600ish for the 7500-12. I'm running the 7500-12 with 12 200GB WD drives with no problems. You can also have more than one of these cards in a box, something that can't be said for the promise cards at this point.

I would LOVE to be able to use expletives at this point, but I think the mods wouldn't like it much.

But let me ask...what on Earth are you doing with 12 200's? I'm still trying to figure out how I'm gonna use all of my 300GB!

Oh yeah...I meant to mention that my decision to go with the Promise card was the price of $140 for a 4ch....3Ware cards DO make me drool silicon bits though....

Unfortunately, it's for business purposes, not personal use. That being said though, after having used the 3ware card, I myself would pay the extra for the 3ware cards in my own systems, even if it is their 4 port cards, instead of 12 port.
