Hot? or Not... Windows XP Pro Upgrade for $82.90 plus shipping

Nightwatch

Click here to see a listing that has ProVantage selling an Academic Version of Windows XP Professional Upgrade for 82.90 +6.95 for shipping. I was about to pick up a copy of XP Home Upgrade for $80 shipped from Staples but now I hesitate.

Does the AE version lack something?

I have heard XP Pro does not have the activation requirement, does anyone know if this is true?

<< I have heard XP Pro does not have the activation requirement, does anyone know if this is true? >>

The "corporate" version of XP Pro is the only version that requires no activation.

Untrue.....the Corporate Version has no Activation Requirent. Regular Pro Full or Upgrade both require it....

I don't know about XP Pro, but in my experience it would not be worth upgrading to XP Home from W2k. I've used W2k on a number of different computers. I also upgraded my home computer from Win 98 to XP Home. My impression of XP Home is that it is the same as, or at least very similar to, W2K but with a bunch of bloat added. If I had had W2k on my home computer, I'd have never upgraded.

My vote is don't do it, unless there is a specific feature in Win XP that you want. Otherwise, W2k provides the same stability.

I am using XP Pro Academic Upgrade and it has yet to force my to register. I have installedit on 2 computers, one as an upgrade and one as a full install. it's been about a month now.

does anyone have thoughts on what kind of time frame might be in place for it if there is one?

How did you get it to do a full install with the XP Pro upgrade? I tried this and it won't let me do it without "seeing" a previous versionn on the Hard drive. I can do a full install of Win Me with the upgrade by popping in a Win 98SE disc when prompted, but no deal with XP Pro.

set your bios to boot from the cd-rom. put the cd in there and it will boot from it. it will ask if you want to repair a windows install or install a new one. hit esc for new, then partition your drives and it will install.

The XP Pro Upgrade WILL do a full install just fine.

If it can't find an existing Windows on any Hard Drive (and you can fake this out in many ways, see above -- regardless, I HIGHLY recomment instaling XP ONLY on a newly formatted HD), it will prompt you during the installation to establish that you already own Windows just by putting a Windows CD into the CD-ROM for a moment. That's it.

it's either 30 / 60 / 120 days for registration for XP, I know Home is 30 days and thought XP PRO was 60?

<< I got it for 5 bucks. yeee haaaww...😀 >>

Oh, yeah?..........I got mine for nuthin!!........does that mean I can yeee haaaww 500 times more than you?............:Q:Q😀😀

i 've searched around and have found no conclusive answer for the production activation of xp pro academic upgrade.

the answers vary:

no activation

30 days

60 days

90 days

180 days

As far as i can tell the, the xp pro corp version is the only one that does not need activation. ANYTHING else will need to be, but the time frame is unclear.

if anyone knows better, please correct me. my info comes from digging around Google searching for "xp activation grace period"

😕

Uhmm.. isn`t that what I said??????

Here is the clear answer: Windows XP Pro, Academic and Regular retail versions, Upgrade and Full install versions, ALL require activation. If you installed the academic version (or another version -- they are EXACTLY the same), and it didn't appear that you activated anything, you may simply have missed it. Despite what the doomsayers have been spreading, if you have a constant Net connection, activation is incredibly quick and painless. You might not even know it happened. It took roughly 1/2 second to activate mine, and the activation process was part of a long series of "back/next" screens that were all part of setting up the software. It was a pleasant surprise that it was so simple.

But regardless, I assure you: This version DOES require activation.

I'm not sure why it's such a big deal, unless you're planning on using an illegal copy. Even if you don't have a net connection, you can still activate teh software just by calling a toll-free number.

Stupid question:

So does this mean that if I upgraded from Win98SE to Win XP Pro, that it will prevent me from using things like warez programs or does this simply mean that I shouldn't be able to use a bootleg copy of Win XP Pro?

The activation applies ONLY to WinXP pro -- no other programs, and no other previous versions of windows. If you stick a bootleg copy of Windows 95 in the CD-Rom to confirm that you are a legitimate upgrade customer, it would work just fine. (Though I certainly don't condone that. Plus, using bootleg copies of OS's is just risky, no matter how smart you think you are.)

<< What's the difference between the regular and academic versions? >>

"Microsoft Academic Editions are fully functional products at a special price. Do you qualify for Microsoft Academic Edition (AE) Products and Pricing? Qualified academic Faculty, Staff, and Higher Education Students are eligible for additional savings on select titles of Microsoft Academic Edition products and product Open Licenses! " and you cannot use Win95 to upgrade from/with.

I got a copy of XP home with my Dell Laptop, and when I reinstalled it from scratch I saw nothing for activation. Maybe it doesn't ask, it just does it automatically.
