It's pretty costly, IMHO. This centrino lappy isn't too light at 6+ LBs either. It's well-featured though. For reference, the Compaq 2100 laptops that were a hot deal:

We got for $760 after coupon and rebate shipped w/o tax:
Athlon XP-M 2400+ barton
Radeon 7000 on Radeon IGP-M chipset
30GB drive
14.1" screen
24xCDRW/DVD combo drive
Around 6 to 6.5 LBs
3.5 hr battery life.

The Pentium M 1.6 is a really costly chip that drives up the cost of stuff. Last I checked, the CPU itself is $700. You may want to settle for a mobile low volt Athlon XP-M with a barton core because they're almost as fast and almost as power efficient at a much lower cost.

Id love an Athlon XP-M married to an ATI 9600 Pro but at this time the two seem mutually exclusive. They put Athlons in the cheapo laptops - at least as far as price goes, but I'm a gamer.

At this price range I'd take a good hard look at the IBM ThinkPad T40.

i agree with RossMAN, you can get a nicely equipted T40 for around $1500-$2000.

The IBM's are 1" thick and under 5lbs with battery life from 6-9 hours, with the extended battery.

Hmmm ... I think the features of this gateway is really good already :) .. but yeah, $1700 is still too costly.

plus it's a gateway. As they said, if you are looking to spend that much, get an IBM. My roomate has a T40. Weighs like nothing..

I am selling my desktop for a laptop. but my budget is around 1200 dollars and I do want to have a good videocard in it.( in case I need it to use with special purpose.) 32 MB Radeon 9000 M Videocard is what I am looking for now. Any Suggestion?

Thanks

What an intelligent, well-formed opinion!

I think I hear your mom calling for you to take out the garbage.

Speaking as someone that has worked there in the past, he is right, they do suck. Their laptops are better than their desktops, but just barely. If you do consider the gateway, backup your system on a very regular basis, and spend the extra money for both the extended warranty, and if you can get it, the emergency replacement. I would guess to say that in the first year or so you will be without it at least once for 2 or more weeks, depending how fast they can get your laptop to the Texas facility to fix it. For that money, look at IBM, or alienware, or Dell.
