hot or not ? d-link d704p router at OM $39.99

went to Office Max looking for a cheap router to set up a small home network.

found the d-link d704p (4 port router with print server) for $39.99.(no rebate or price match)

brought it home and plugged it in --works flawlessly.

seems to be a good deal inasmuch a quick peek at pricewatch shows the same product at $45-47 plus shipping.

Hot? YES. I set this baby up last weekend at a friend's house and was shocked at how easy it was! Also, besides the parallel port for the printer, there's even a serial port on it too. This is a great router - he got his through that BB/OM PM+rebate from a couple weeks ago.

Yep - a smoking deal. Bought one for $34.99 out the door at OfficeMax about three weeks ago. Works like a champ. I use it to share my modem (no silly ICS to deal with in XP) and I use it as a DHCP server. Simple to set up too.

Most OM is OOS or only has a few..

good luck finding one

u can have it PM at Bestbuy / CC and both have $20 rebate.. 110% PM..

final cost = $20... fvck.. u kidding ? Nope.. good luck finding 1 thought..

Very good buy. I for some reason have bought 4 of them so far. I have no problem finding them in stock at Circuit City. AR the price looks to be around 14.99 or so.

Yeah i did the circuit city pricematch too! They have it for $89.99, so it cames to about $15 plus taxes. What a great deal!

Shows as an instore special at Omax for me. I will give the CC or BB thing a shot. Will they PM if you have already bought the router at Omax?? Then I wouldn't have to worry about it being OOS.

It's an instore special you have to havethe flyer from the store. i am going to attempt it now.

Anyone try doing a PM and BB yet? I think you might have a few problems since the actual model number is not listed on the Office Max ad. Also add that to the fact that BB may have the new version of the DI-704P (same hardware different enclosure design). They may try to hastle you about their router not looking like the one offered by OM. Anyhow it would be nice to know if anyone was successful at this.

I have this router and it works great. The only problem I have had was with the printer option. Sometimes it works and most of the time it doesn't. Anyone else have any problems?

I first tried CC but they were out. BB had 3 on the shelf but, as you pointed out they have the newer looking ones. the box was slighty different and the Router itself is silver and black instead of black and it comes with a CAT5 Cable.

I got the PM No problem, I gave them the officemax ad. They didn't even call to check stock. (even thought I knew they had 2 on the shelf). Printed out my rebate recipt and I was on my way. I only got a 100% PM not the 110%, I didn't realize it until I got out to the car and I figured it's not worth the hassle to go back for the $4. I got a Router w/firewall 4/port 10/100 switch and Print Server for $19.00 A/R I am happy.

If you can grab the new enclosure, the 4 Cat5 ports for the switch come out the back instead of the front (neater).

This is definatly turning into a hot deal. You might want to change the Title to reflect it.

is this only certain instore specials? i'd like to try PMing to BB, but I don't see see this router at this price in the flyer that came. thanks!

I printed out the large version of the OM ad - that way the OM stock number was readable. Then I did a search on the stock number, which clearly showed the description as DLink DI-704P. The item query also showed the price as $99.99.

Armed with both, I went to both CC and BB. At both places, I showed the image, pointed out the stock number, then showed the stock number query which clearly showed the DLink model number. Both places said "but their price is $99 bux". Told them both that it was $99 on the web site, but that the ad clearly showed it as $39 in store. Both CC and BB matched prices, no hassle.

CC wouldn't give me the rebate receipt that printed out. When I asked for it she said "but then you'd get it for like $15!". "Never mind" sez I, "I'll get the rebate off the web site"....

At BB, the guy said "and you'll still get the $20 rebate!".

Very cool.

And yes, the rebate says one per person, yada yada yada. Mom will be sending in the other 🙂

Hmm... I just went to CC and tried to pricematch the $39 deal from officemax - I didn't even realize that they had a $20 rebate, I just wanted the 10% discount. The CSR refused to do the pricematch, because it would end up being like $20 (duh, that's why i was buying it), so I talked to a manager. He agreed to lower their price to $59, so that it would be equal with the officemax price, after rebate. I tried to get him to understand that 1) they guarantee 110%, not just 100%, and 2) if one's a flat $39 and another requires a CC rebate (which I've had terrible luck with), which am I going to pick?

Am I doing something wrong?

Some printers are not networkable. Have you checked out the dLink website? I found out that my HP3150 is not networkable . . . 🙁

Try another CC store. A big hassle for $20 but this could work too. Buy at full price from CC, and buy at OM for 39.99. Go back to CC showing that you purchased one at OM for 39.99 and PM. Hopefully CC forgets and dont try to add the rebate amout, if not just return the CC one, but stuck with one for 39.99 from OM

Mine has been acting a bit funky printing to an HP Laserjet 4L that is on the supported list. It acts abit weird thought, somtimes it won't print at at all, sometimes it prints 25% (the top left corner) of the page zoomed HUGE over the entire 8.5 x 11 page. other times it prints fine. If i power cycle the router it prints fine for a while.

I couldn't get the print software to work at all under XP but, I found
Instructions on D-links site that show how to setup XP/2000 to print without the software.

I have the new titanium enclosure that was supposed to be identical to the old one, but when I went looking for firmware I found this in the readme file:
This firmware is not compatible with the DI-704P Titanium(silver) case. Implementing this firmware on the newer Titanium case model may render the device unusable. Use this firmware on the brown case model only.

hmm, leads me to beleive there are more than cosmetic differences between the old an new model.

I will try tech support and see If I can resolve the printer weirdness. If not I am still happy for $19 😀

Deal is still hot!

I just did this last night, price matched to CC, they had it for $89.95, they had 2 people call up to make sure it was the right price! They didn't give me the print out of the rebate though? Link for Rebate Online

can anyone tell me how i can reference the PM, because online officemax says it's 99.99. do i need to go to OM and look get a pricetag?
