Hot or not? BFG GeForce 7800GS AGP $175 after $60 rebate

Top of the line AGP graphics card... Best one ever made, there won't be any better than this. If you have an AGP rig and do not wish to upgrade in the near future to PCI-e, then you should jump on this deal.

x1950pro agp should be out soon (in the next month?). The x1950 pro pcie is better than the 7900gs pcie, so the x1950 pro is better than the 7800gs.

hot deal indeed. rebate was $30 less.

even before rebate the price is about the lowest among retailers.

I think the x1950pro AGP cards will go for more than that. I'm guessing demand will be high at first and everyone will jack up their prices.

not quite 😛

the x1950p in AGP will smoke it ... and it is available
[except for D3/Q4 Opengl games]

i bought the x1950p AGP 256MB vRAM version by VisionTek .... i had it for 3 weeks but am returning it for the 512MB version --out now ... but hard to get and not yet "on sale" 😉
[it's MSRP is $249 for the 512MB version ... faster than the one in the FS review]

Outside of robot world, its faster at higher res when the FPS drop. On paper.. it might be faster.. what if he squeezes a higher OC outa it =/

Modern shader-intensive games are "more playable" with the 512MB ver over the 256MB version 😉

[ ... that means you can play the game at possibly higher FPS since it is smoother (and load bigger textures more quickly, to boot)
... that IS faster in my book] 😛

it might also be: "more future proof"
[i don't eXpect the difference to be big]

nitpicker

I'm convinced... but the article didn't say anything about power consumption. I'm afraid my little Dell PS is maxed out now with my stock GS6800. Anybody know how much more power the 1950 uses? I definitely need to upgrade my video, but I'd like to avoid a complete new system.

450 watts recommended ... 30a on the 12v rail with a 'loaded system'

Mine is a 480w Thermaltake with 18a on the 12v rail ... not loaded but my CPU is o/c'd
[P4 2.80c @ 3.31Ghz] ... no stability problems whatsoever.

Thanks. Maybe I should move this to the Hardware forum, but do you know if it would work if I used a second PSU (i.e., another power supply just sitting by the PC) for the molex connectors on the 1950? IOW, if it gets enough power from the molex, will it draw less power from the AGP slot?

On the contrary

The difference between the 512 mb and 256 mb versions are negligible: we're seeing 2-4 fps in newer games and a larger gap in older, less graphically intensive games.

Some games wont allow you to access High settings without 512, and I don't think you can use Vista's best interface without it either.

there is no 'comparison' between the 256 and 512MB versions in your link as they are different cores ... and the 512MB version Gainward wipes the floor over the 256MB EVGA 😛
:Q

You cannot properly access "ultra" Quality in Q4/D3 games without 512MB vRAM 😉

In other news, the sky is blue, the earth is round, and my wifes cooking tastes like brown.
More at 11.

Gee golly Mom, brown for lunch again? Oh man, I wish they made other food other then brown 🙁

Is this what you hear at the lunch table day after day from your family? You want to make them a nutritious meal but who's got the time in this busy world of ours today?

Our top news story today, People at Anandtech Hotdeals fight over the memory size of a graphics card and make a big deal of it.
Thats right Bob, its almost as if they have no life that they have to get their fill fighting over a few frames per second the 2 cards may or may not get.
Oh thats so true Tom.

Our other top story today, funboy42, of anandtech as well, finds a way to end world hunger and invents a oil substitute to end our need for crude oil. When we went to his house for a interview he would not open the door and neighbors say they saw black choppers land in the middle of the night, along with black Ford sedans with people dressed in black, wearing black sunglasses, take him from his house at 3 am. Some neighbors of funboy's we interviewed deny this ever happened but were obviously shaken up or on drugs for they had a blank expression on their faces, were shaking rapidly, sweating, and kept peaking out their windows while we waited for funboy to return home. When we interviewed the local police they claimed no one has lived at that house for over 40 years and no one that goes by the name funboy42 has ever lived there, ever, and told us we didn't have a permit and had to leave town, which we did.

Went missing during this whole ordeal our own channel 5 news lighting grip hand Marty Smith. No one saw him since this morning and we don't know where he is. All we know is he clocked in this morning, he was in the van with us on the way there, he set up the lights, we asked him to get us some coffee and a jelly donut, never returned from getting those things, and didn't help us take the lighting down and return back to the studio with us in the van. If anyone has seen him your are urged to call, WTF you still reading this stuff, missing persons at 1800-555-Ou812.
Back to you Tom.

Aero Glass interface can run right even on a 128MB card. (Microsoft ran it on a demo show sometime ago on a 9600 PRO) Some games doesn't allow you to access high settings if you don't have 512MB, that is pure marketing crap. Look at Doom 3 and Quake 4 at ultra high, I still able to run it on everything max and no performance drop, only would pause for about a half second when switching of rooms because it needs more RAM than I have and swap some of the game textures to the hard. And other example of it is GRAW, It didn't allow me to access high settings, so I edited the render config file manually and I was able to run everything on high and I saw very little performance drop either (Only the ground was on medium because it would cause a checker pattern on it with big black squares on it), but everything looks far better (Particularly on the soldier's uniforms) So the only benefit of 512MB cards will be on super high resolutions and Anti Aliasing when you are not bandwidth or fillrate limited, and no shaders or geometry will benefit of the extra RAM and probably at such resolutions you are more GPU bound than limited by the amount of RAM. Still a good thing though but not a must have so I think that the benefits will be seen on DX10 since there's not too much overhead like in DX9.
