Some of the best up-conversion dvd player for the $$$, some review even suggests it is as good as player in the $3000 price range. Yes it is that good because I own one, myself.
Especially for those who own either lcd or plasma display, this little player will work wonder for you.
If you own an analog display (with no DVI or HDMI), need not apply.

Agreed one of the better upconverting DVD players along with the Panasonic S97 and Panasonic S99. I think im going to pick one up myself. I have a 50in Plasma.

with no dvi on my lcd, will the included dvi -> hdmi cable still allow me to upconvert? Or will it also upconvert with component cables?

TIA

In for one. Been eyeing an upconverter for a while now. Interested to see what kind of difference this will make on my 65" Mits CRT. (Yes, it has a DVI input).

Good deal. But i don't think you get the DVI/HDMI cable if you order from amazon.

If you get directly from oppo digital, it does come with the cables. I think it's $199 from them. so it may be worth it to go through oppo digital.

I would check with amazon first of course.

The Oppo unit comes with both dvi and dvi-hdmi cables. Oppo's Tech Support is also great if not one of the best in the industry.

I guess if you plan on buying HD DVDs, probably. But for us who backup or current DVDs, this is a no brainer.

Good question. I would say that it depends on whether or not you are on early adopter...if you are planning to get an HD DVD player (or Blu-Ray player) within a year of it coming out, then it probably doesn't make sense to get an upconverting DVD player. But keep in mind that you will pay a premium (I'm guessing around $400-$500) for the new HD players if you buy them within a year of their release.

If you currently own a lot of DVD's that you aren't planning to buy again in the new HD format, then an upconverting DVD player probably makes sense to buy now.

This is a really excellent player. My brother just got one for his 51" Hitachi HD RP. I tried it out on my XGA projector via DVI and the quality was amazing - no more ghosting and it really cut down on the grainyness in sky backgrounds. Also seemed to eliminate the bulk of the rainbow effect, although my projector doesn't really have that problem. I believe that the firmware is upgradable and that it also plays DivX/XviD content. The tray initially seems to be made out of cheap plastic, but it's actually supposed to be a break-proof bendable plastic.

Bummer, price is up to $199. Oh well, at least you get free shipping.

Also plays DVD-Audio (not officially documented), and there's a multi-region hack in the Amazon review section 😉

Great player, lots of user reviews on the web. Last I checked them, they were over $300 so this is still a good deal at $199. I'm still holding out for either a HDDVD or Bluray, at that point I suspect these will come down to the $100 range or lower.

It's already multi-region (ntsc & pal).
It's been the 3rd week since I have had this player and it hasn't stopped impressing me. Watched mr & mrs Smith last night, this player puts a smile on my face when the wife asked me if she was watching the movie via a hd channel on Directv satellite.
You want to impress your friend or SO or neighbor or whoever, pop Star War Ret of The Sith dvd in the Oppo, by using a Plasma display....Then do not tell them where the source comes from, I bet 10 out of 10 would say from a HD contents.

Nice! Shame about the movie though, only good part was the car chase scene.
