How does this one compare to the Nikon 8800 or 8700?? The 8800 or the 8700 are made in Japan and the D50 is made in Thailand. Any1 have A/B comparason in term of photo qualities on these??

NOTE EVERYONE: Get an extra 2% rebate from ebates when you go throubgh them.

Thanks OP. Great Deal. I just ordered it. Ghettocowboy: I have a Olympus C-8080 which is one of the toprated prosumer cameras but its comparable to the Nikon 8080. I do like it but at high iso level you start to see noise. If you read the reviews on the d50 you start to see a tad bit of noise at 1600 ISO which is AWESOME. Just a little bit of noise at that high of iso is awesome feat for a value DLR SLR. The only thing your going to be missing with this camera is some consumer related features like micro modes so youll have to learn to adjust settings for micro type pictures which will increase your skills but means youll have to "learn" how to take pictures instead of having the camera handle everything. Also you won't get the video mode (which i don't care about anyways). Anyways i looked athe going prices on ebay on my Olmpus c-8080 and it seems to be almost what this camera is going for so im jumping on this deal.

D50 is a DSLR.
If you want speed and versatility then a p&s like the 8800 doesn't even compare.
The 87-8800 can't do instant on, high ISO, manual zoom, almost instant AF speed, can't change lenses.

I tried the $60 coupon code last night and it was expired already. Is it back again?

It's a great camera. I was looking at the 2 lens kit for ~$700 before tax. That's a really great deal since the 2nd lens 55mm-200mm is $279 retail.

Other than price, there is no comparison between the Nikon 8800 or 8700 P&S and the Nikon D50 DSLR.

Interchangeable lenses means great versatility and vastly greater control over your pictures with a DSLR. Only downside is the cost involved in satisfying the desire for more and higher quality lenses. :) Plus, DSLRs are just more fun to use!

As stated above, you do lose the ability to record movies with a DSLR, if that's important to you.

Well it tells me mine will ship on/before 5/3/06. I hope this is accurate and it at least ships by that date. Has anyone has experience with dell orders where this happened? Were they on time most of the time?

thanks,
ncage

Well, I bit. Ship date is on or before 5/18/2006 :( Hopefully it won't take that long!

Final price was $523.47 + $26.17 tax = $549.64 shipped; fatwallet cashback of $16.49 (end result of $533.15).

I bit too. Wife's been bugging me forever for a DSLR but I didn't want to spend $1000 on one. This is perfect.

That certainly would be nice if they shipped it that soon. I shipped it to my parents house since I will be moving.. it would be nice if it got there before the end of April so they can bring it with them when they come to my graduation and then I can use it when I go on vacation afterwords.

i end up going to dpreview.com and doing a lot of research. It appears that everyone that has been getting refurb d50 cameras from beachcamera/buydig have been getting cameras that look like they are brand new...only indication they are not is by the outside markings on the box. I have not read about one person that has been unhappy. I decide to call dell and cancel my order which i might add was a PAIN in the rear. I had this indian guy that could barely speak english and telling me i didn't have the exact correct information that i made the order. I said i could have used either of two phone numbers and he said well sir call back when you have the correct information and we will try to cancel it so i had to argue saying i did have the correct information and that i had the order number so he needed to cancel my order. So he went through and entered all my information again and was about to cancel it. I am so unhappy how hard it is to cancel something through dell..and no you can't do it through their website......you have to talk to this person that can barely speak english and who enters your information incorrect. They shouldn't have to have all that info to cancel an order anyways.

But anyways i digress i ended up buying the camera from beachcamera for 469.00 shipped. I was saving about a $100 over dells new price since they were still going to charge me tax on my order and with the luck people are having with refurbs i just decided to go that route. So i will have mine soon.

Man, I just read those posts on dpreview.com too about how good the refurbs are... I am so tempted to cancel my dell order too and get it from them.... do you have a ship date yet? I see that currently beach isn't processing orders until Sunday, but I was curious if you got in before they put that up.

Confirmation email says 5/18.

Now I just need to find a good SD card for it.

As for the refurbs....? The wife wouldn't stand for it.

No i don't because they are closed until 4/16 for the easter holiday. IM sure after that it will ship quickly though. I ordered my very first dig camera from beach (Canon S10) and i was extremly happy with there service. Here is my thought after reading about the refurbs....i have not seen one person that hasn't got one that it didn't look brand new. Yes you less warranty with it (3 months i think) but most likely if something is going to go wrong with it your going to figure it out in less than 3 months anyways and nikon will fix it and to boot i think i can sell my olympus c-8080 (which is a great camera it its own right) for more than im getting this camerea for. Yes and the 100 i will save i will use for a sigma 70-300mm APO DG Lens telaphoto/macro lens. So the $100 you can save you can use towards a good lense. My next lens will probably be a Sigma 150mm f2.8 macro lense which will probably cost more than the camere :).

I have no regret on ordering the refurb and im sure my pocketbook won't either :).

Some more stuff to add: if you don't want to spend time learning about photography, then don't buy a DSLR. Yes, it's more versatile and it's faster, but for most, a point and shoot is better for them. So anyone new to DSLRs and thinking on getting in on this deal, do reconsider. It takes a lot of time to learn to use a DSLR, and to learn the principles of photography. It is also a potentially expensive hobby (the lower price range of good lens is around $600).

That said, I have a DSLR and i really like photography. But if I didn't like photography, then using a DSLR would have frustrated me.

I will definitly have to disagree with some of the points you made in this post. First yes a dSLR will take longer to learn than a p&S we both agree with that but it won't take that long to learn the basic principles of photography (aperature/f-stop,shutter speed, iso, ect) and they aren't all that hard and this camera does have a lot of automatic settings so that you can take good pictures off the bat and experiment as you have time.

Second a good lense being at the lower end $600. I totally agree with this statement. So are you saying any lens below $600 is junk?
One of the first lenses that im going to get is a Sigma 70-300mm APO DG lens. Here are some pictures taken with this lens which you can get just shy of $200:

http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/searc...ery=sigma+70%2D300mm&forum=1034&page=3

This comes from a sub $200 lens. WHat do you think?

Here is pictures from a tamron 90mm macro lens which sells for just over $400.
http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1034&message=18023370

Here is pictures frmo a sigma 105mm macro lens which can be hand for under $400:

I am not saying that those expensive lenses your talking about especially zeiss and lieca brands do not warrant the cost somtimes but very GOOD results can be had from lenses a lot cheaper. I don't think its true telling people they have to pay $600 on the low end for a good lens.

a real quick question...I've read reviews for both, both get postive remarks...but between the D50 and the REBEL XT...which would you take? Right now there are some good offers on the canon Rebel XT, can be easily had for around $550 +/- if you shop around(body only) but still a competitively priced agains the D50(a little easier on the wallet)

???

I was in the same dillemma... Couldn't decide which too buy.... But, after much research, finally made a decision and here's why.

The Canon rebel is probably a little better... But is that little bit of better gonna change anything for those of us whose entire lives don't revolve around photography? Probably not.

The D50 is roughly $200 cheaper. From all acounts the D50 standard lens is better than the Rebel's. I say, buy the D50 and spend the 200 on another lens.
