I got the scanner and as I said earlier it is indeed the 3300 Visioneer, USB version.

The colors at the border of the glass are different to the paralell version and the connector is different of course.
But that's all.

Like all flatbeds it is a CIS (not CCD) but the quality is WAY better than the SlimScan C3 I had. From this short test I can see no differences to my Scanjet 3200C (the 17$ deal) .

The lid is detachable in case you scan a book.

One thing I must note though: the USB cable is quite short, around 1 1/2 meters only.

Attention, thanks for the update regarind being a Visioneer, but all high end and medium range flatbed scanners are CCD. Only the low end flatbeds are CIS.

dimwit:
Due to the height and width limitation, mirrors and optics needed for CCD's are hard to implement.
Even the 1200x2400 Canoscan is a CIS and that is quite high end.

dimwit, please tell me which flatbed scanners use CCD?
I have had quite a few different models of them (for my customers) and need some more so I would be interested in that.

extremepc:
Your'e still here?

Anybody know how long this deal will last?
/edit: Did anybody call cs to check if the rebate will be honored on the 6136u?

Attention, looking at CNET, All the editor's choices that list types scanner are CCD. Here is one for example:
http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/0-1074-404-2261380.html?tag=st.co.1016.ec.1074-404-2261380

I just went to http://computers.cnet.com/hardware/search/1,10121,0-1074-402-0,00.html?ob=1 and started from top to bottom.

The Epson Expression 1600 Professional Edition is, Epson Perfection 640U, Umax Astra 6400, HP ScanJet 5200Cse, Visioneer OneTouch 8650,Mustek Plug-n-Scan 1200 III EP are all CCD and so on.

My understanding was that CIS is limited to 300x600 optical, but like you say the Canoscan is CIS and goes way beyond that. The Canoscan is the highest rated CIS by Cnet 7/10, while all the others mentioned about are CCD and rated higher.

dimwit:
How nice for you that you found "All the editor's choices" at CNET and looked at them.

But you missed my question:

I asked you which FLATBED scanners use CCD?

None of the ones's you mentioned ARE flatbed scanners.
Even the Mustek that looks like that is 4" high.

http://www.Mustek.com/Imaging/products/discontinued/1200-iii-ep.htm

To your "understanding":
The issue with CIS is not the limitation of the pixels but the type of sensor used. CIS uses the cheaper CMOS sensor.

No doubt that until today the S/N (signal to noise ratio) of CCD sensors is much better than their CMOS cousins, i.e. they are much more sensitive.
That is not the point here.

You said :
"..but all high end and medium range flatbed scanners are CCD. Only the low end flatbeds are CIS.."

Meanwhile you agreed that CIS flatbed's can indeed be high end too.

I just would learn about the other statement you did regarding "..all high end and medium range flatbed scanners are CCD.." .

But anyhow, the deal is dead now. RIP.

Dang, tried going to Staples.com to get this scanner, but I'm getting this error after i try to add the item to my cart:

'no items in cart or current sku not in items collection

Commerce.SimpleList.1 error '8002000b'

Invalid index.

/Cart/includes/add_item.asp, line 102 '

Perhaps its time to call staples and see if they will be getting more in.....

Got mine by Fedex last night. I've been scanning pre-postmarked Florida ballots for Al Gore all morning -- I am up to 1,700 ballots as we speak. Just a few more, and I'll jump in my Covair and slip them into the Jacksonville post office.

Everyone can thank me later.

Attention, I think we just about agree on everything, except maybe the definition of flatbed. If you look at the bottom of the Mustek link you provided, it says "flatbed", still 4" high or whatever. Yes, the CIS are slimmer, but a flatbed is still a flatbed.

Oh well deal is over they are out so we can stop talking about it... and Central either way this goes this thing is a mess, and you joke is cute but not funny. 🙂

I got my scanner from staples a while ago... just installed. It's awesome!!! My previous scanner is a slim parallel port... this is much faster! and it doesn't hang your system during scan either! This is such an awesome deal!!! And I got my scanner the day after I ordered. Thank you, very nice find, very hot deal!!!!

DecoY, I'd check back with staples on this deal. I bought it for 30 with a coupon (it was 40 at the time) in October, so they've run this deal twice now in the last month.

It's funny, I thought about selling it, but just opened it up last week to scan some documents...works really well for the money. I was pretty skeptical about it, but I'm happy with it. You can also buy it off eday for around $40 (or less?).

It is great to see that this USB scanner is faster than many people's previous parallel port scanner. I still am looking to replace my old Plustek parallel port scanner, but so far the 3 cheap USB ones I've tried were all much slower.

Of course since parallel (EPP/ECP) is twice as fast as USB, looks like another parallel scanner may be the only way to get the good speed that I've become used to. What is more important is how the manufacturer uses the speed.

attention and dimwit, here is what Plustek has to say:

<< Please note every Plustek scanner is equipped with a Charge Couple Device (CCD) image sensor providing users with the highest image quality and a vast improvement over previous Contact Image Sensor (CIS) technology. >>

and yes, these ARE flatbed scanners of course....

Even the cheap Mustek X6 EPP scanner at BestBuy for $9.50 after $10 rebate uses CCD now. Same with the cheap Umax Astra's. CIS is an old technology.

I ordered one and thinks it's great for the price. Speed is more than acceptable (approx 30 sec full page on 300 dpi color).

Anyway my parallel port is tied up with my printer and I hate using pass through parallel hook-up for printer/scanner (Had problems with pass through previously). For this reason parallel scanners are taboo to me.

I realize this thread was created three weeks ago but it appears that Staples no longer carries this carries?

When I click the link that mikebill provided I was brought to the main Staples web site.

Also when I check their Scanners selection, I see no Memorex scanners what-so-ever.

RobsTV- what are u talkin about, parallel are twice as fast as usb, then why is everything switching to usb now, insteada parallel, i have a couple of old parallel scanners that cost a lotta money, and they suck a$$ compared to the $10 memorex i just got from staples yesterday, just thought i'd put in a word
