Newegg has this drive for $99 shipped.

I have several of the Samsung drives that run $119 shipped that I am happy with, but is the extra $20 worth it?

Nice price but it does not tell you about the warranty. Is this the one where you have to go to Maxtor website and enter the serial number to find the warranty after you have purchased it?

Another option is the Seagate 500GB Serial ATA/300 16MB Buffer ST3500641AS-RK - Retail Hard Drive Kit at Frys.com for $104.99 and Free Shipping. It is retail and has a 5 year warranty. Might be a better deal unless you have to pay tax.

Yeah, I was looking at this too. I need a few large drives. Wish it were a little cheaper though. I know they have had these for 90-100 shipped.

Outpost was selling the retail Maxtor 500gb SATA 3.0 HD, which is actually a Seagate 7200.10 Barracuda, at $90 just a few weeks ago. Currently retail Seagate 7200.10 (with 5 year warranty) is available there at $105. By the way, the oem Maxtor drive (also a Seagate unit, judging by the model #) is for $100, not $99, at NE. The newer Samsung HD's are supposed to be quieter and cooler, if not faster, too, than the current crop of WD, Maxtor and Seagate HD's. There is a review on Anandtech. Barracuda 11's are just around the corner, though.

The ST3500641AS is a 7200.9, so I'd rather the Maxtor since it's a rebadged 7200.10. That said I got a pair of the Maxtors when they were $90 at Frys. They're in my server mirrored up running next to a couple of their Seagate twins that are running non-RAID. I have no doubt they'll outlive their useful period and get ebay'd.

Not surprised. That happens a lot with Seagate drives from Outpost, especially when they are on sale.

OP,

I've both drives (Samsung 500 & Maxtor 7200.10 500G)

The Maxtor HDD is significantly louder & hotter than the Samsung one, but it's slightly faster.
I'm really annoyed by my Maxtor 500G
But... I also don't think the Samsung HDD is worth $20 more

(especially OEM Samsung from newegg, more like refurb to me)
