I just ordered one. Delivery for me was $5 for ground shipping, well worth it as I live 41 miles from the nearest CompUSA.

I have had bad experiences with Maxtor, but good with Seagate. I had lots of Maxtors early on, and none of them failed. But the Maxtors I used in the past two years have had more problems.

I think it is no coincidence that Maxtor has also shortened its warranty in the last couple years.

I agree that every hard drive will fail, and there is no substitute for backing up your data. But I think the incidence of problems will increase relying on Maxtor. The price difference is pretty minor.

Did you call the nearest CompUSA directly to order (as the deal is in-store only and not online)? Staples online is OOS for me and CompUSA is too far.

What zip code did you order from?

Ready for a data refill or it just spins?

I picked up 5 of them yesterday. I guess the checkout gal was knew or didn't know about the 2/customer limit. The guy before me got 4 of them.

It's unfortunately this type of practice that generally:
  • (a) ruins the chances of others benefiting from the deal and
    (b) prevents future deals such as these being offered again.

Well said. I'm in the middle of upgrading my computer and really needed just 1 (one) of these drives but it went out of stock while I was checking out so I'll have to look elsewhere. I'd buy one off eBay but don't want to encourage those who buy 5 to resell there.

Drove to best buy to pricematch. Jerks only did a 100% price match. I thought it was 110%

Oh well, best buy was a bit closer.

Exactly, Seagate is the brand to get these days, and Maxtor is the brand to not get, with WD somewhere in between.

3/5 of my Maxtors have failed in the last 2 years, only one still had a warranty left.

Not hot.

Would it really cause B)? Because the store is selling the same amount of drives either way, although I agree, it could result in some dis-satisfied customers if the store sells out. But .. knowing how good of a deal that something like this is, a customer should expect the possibility that the deal might sell out.
The reason that they normally limit quantities, is to prevent dealers from buying up their entire stock during these semi-loss-leader type sales, which are usually designed to bring customers into the store. (Ok, you're right, now I see the logic behind B) - it results in less overall customers being drawn into the store, well, sort of, they would likely show up regardless, unless they checked stock beforehand.)

Considering how stingy BB is with their PM policy now (even though it says "guaranteed" in places), consider yourself fortunate. They only give you 110%, if you purchase the item there in the first place, and then go back to BB to PM it to another store. I guess perhaps that's an additional bonus for your time, or something. But BB does not offer straight-up 110% PMs, perhaps you are thinking of Staples?

Not an expert on this, and I don't work in the hardware biz.

Deal looks very tempting - I'd like to get another HD for linux setup and extra data storage. Maxtor seems to be having lots of decent sales around the web. However, I've seen ALOT of negative feedback on Maxtor in particular. One website devoted to Storage (not sure if one can use the actual name in this forum) rated Maxtor pretty low in terms of reliability. I also found a link to a site known as WarrantyWeek that ranked Maxtor the second worst spender (not just harddrive company) as a percent of sales paid for warranty work in 2003 (their # was seemingly 5.9% of total sales).

Question: is this a perception issue or is there something to this?

Number above might explain why the warranty is only 1 year.

Precisely.

Also, we'd be foolish if we assumed stores did not monitor buying trends and their impact. Although certainly an issue regarding a different policy, there was a time Staples price matched after rebate prices, until the free memory (or worse, losing money on each sale) debacle a few years back, where people not only took advantage of a good deal (which I see no problem whatsoever with) but did so five and six times.

I wonder how BB's "devil customer" policy is working out thus far?

Yes, there's always somebody, that on the really good (say, free-after-coupon) deals, decides that they want to order like 1000 of them off of the web site. Yeah, like their sales team isn't going to notice something like that?

I haven't seen too many of the really, really hot deals (goods for free, and money back besides!) like there used to be a couple of years back. Honestly though, the reason that those deals even existed, was the sloppy sale planning and policy-making on behalf of the stores making the offers, at least speaking of the purely legitimate deals, not the shady fraudulent ones. Eventually the stores wisened up a bit, to deal with their "prodigy" deal-hunting customers. Remember the Staples' blacklist?

Heck, I haven't even seen FAR CD-R or jewel case deals in months, OM used to run them pretty-much bi-monthly last year. Does that imply that the economy is picking up, somehow? Or are stores just getting "cheaper".

I was told by BB from a previous PM that I would have to buy it first from BB then do a PM to get 110%. When you show them and ad or a receipt they just 100% it. I think that's a lot of hooey becacuse if it's the same price, why should I buy it at BB? just because I'm there?

Went to two Compusas and they were out so I PM at Fry's. Gonna use it for TV capture in my HTPC. Should be over 100hrs capacity at highest quality in MCE 2005. Now to find stuff worth capturing...

My Maxtor died yesterday, so I needed a new HD quick. I was at CompUSA yesterday, and they had these available. My brother picked one up just because it was so cheap, I got a 160gb Seagate Barricuda (5 year warranty :D) for $109 + $40 MIR for $69 + Taxs total (cost me $77).

I would have picked up that Maxtor if one didn't just die on me, or it had a longer warranty (3+ years).

Staples had a 200gb Maxtor for $89 + 30 MIR for a total of $59 tax, another decent deal. If only it wasn't a Maxtor.

So yes, you can pick these up locally.
