You should all check these w/ Partition Magic or other partition utility. Mine had a formatted capacity of 111 Gigs when I got it, but there was almost 3 gigs of unpartitioned space, so I expanded the partition in Partition Magic and VIOLA 114 Gigs of free space. SO check these for a little extra room ;)

Yes, well, price always convinced me to go with 5400 ($49 for 60GB at Best Buy - Thanksgiving 2001).
I recently got my first 7200RPM drive and measured the difference:
Reinstalling a 1.5 GB compressed drive image file takes 13 minutes @7200RPM and 17 minutes @5400RPM. Do the math.

Yeah, but 4 minutes difference for the price just doesnt seem all that worth it :)

Anyone have the full drive or just the enclosure that they would like to sell? Send me a PM if so. Was able to only get my hands on one of these drives.

Thsi is my first time using a external harddrive. I plugged this baby into my computer w/ XP pro sp1. System found it immediately and install the drivers. But I could find the drive in "My computer". Do I need to install other software or do other setting??

Please advise.
Thanks a lot!

Dear ig'nant Raging Bitch,

Powerquest Drive Image 2002 (prettier interface) or Norton Ghost are the single most important pieces of software. They use a start up floppy to backup your entire hard drive to multiple CDRs. This is particularly useful if you partition your hard drive (Powerquest Partition Magic is excellent for this) first, then install your operating system onto C drive and then all large Apps on other drives. You than backup the C drive which contains Windows (+maybe a few other small programs).

Every few months, after Windows breaks down or starts giving you errors, you replace your C drive with backed up version of it, and things are just as they used to be when you backed them up first. I also keep a txt file where I write changes and tweaks I made to the original installation, that way, when I reinstall from backup, I make those changes, than save on CDR's again and so on every few months.

Originally, it took me days to reinstall Windows and get things back the way I like them. It now takes minutes with the help of Drive Image 2002 or Norton Ghost. Now just make sure you change location of Favorites, Desktop and Start Menu, (CUT and PASTE from C:\Windows will do) since they require more frequent backup, so if you have them on another drive, restoring C drive would not replace them.

Every setting in every application is just the way you first set it. (Every menu size, every font size, every icon.) Registry backup is no substitute for organized quick C Drive backup/restore.

I defragment my drives and use ScanDisk but nothing makes my PC go faster then when I restore from a backup made just after I first setup things the way I prefer.

exisle was right, I was referring to how long it takes for a Drive Image file located on a 7200RPM partition to be restored to another 7200RPM partition.

That's why it took me so long to get a 7200 RPM. (Couple months back: CompUsa-Microcenter price match 120 GB 7200RPM 8MB buffer $49.99)
You did the math right. Bottom line, I agree look at the price vs. GBs real hard but 7200 does make a difference if you can find a half-way decent deal for it. Regular price is not worth it IMHO, but keep coming back here and sooner or later...

Yes, all I'm saying is if there is a BIG price differential, the 4 minutes time doesnt make that much of a big savings... Like cdrw drives anything over 16x is just overkill....

Quick question about this drive, how much faster will it be for data transfer using the usb 2.0 vs using usb 1.1? Thanks in advance.

USB 2.0 benchmarks at 25 MB/sec and USB 1 tops out about 1.25 MB/sec so it will be about 20 times faster.

Hi Nealh,

I just plugged a $30GB 7200 drive into this enclosure.
The drive is a little bit warm but i think it's okay. Or you may dig two holes on the enclosure and put two mini fans on it.
Don't know if the power is engough for two extra fans though. :p

It's 61884 and it depends on the store you go. So definitely YMMV

Um.. I do. I use the NTFS compression built into WinXP for my Firewire 160gb drive. What do I care about the speed? I just checked the properties and it's getting me about 12% more disk space for free.... so that's about an extra 20gb for free. Seems almost stupid not to use the compression if you are using the disc solely for storage and not speed critical things.
