Find sites such as SD or FW or head to their forums for the 10 dollar off coupon code

there is a 10 dollar rebate currently for this router.

I have 2 of these, one set up at parents and one at my own apartment. DD-WRT is awesome. I have permanent VPN tunnels setup for the two separate networks, you can use Windows DUN to "dial in" to the VPN, set up QoS (works awesome for XBOX LIVE, I can host a match of Rainbow Six Vegas while downloading at full 6M against usenet and BT), great port forwarding, and you can even tweak wireless strength, etc. DD-WRT Link: http://www.dd-wrt.com/dd-wrtv2/index.php

There are other firmwares such as Hyper WRT and Open WRT, but I haven't tried them personally.

$41 is a steal IMO.

Good deal OP. Indeed, DD-WRT is a must for this router. Mine is up all the time, no reboots, no problems. DD-WRT is free and makes this a great router.

Yes. I actually have one WRT54G v2.2 (Old version that works with DD-WRT) and a WRT54GL working in tandem, with the Linux version functioning as a wireless bridge.

EDIT: 44.69 Shipped AR for me. Pretty hot. Got this same router for <$40 AR from Buy.com when they had GCO deals still going.

Can anyone offer some insight on which is better - the buffalo WHR-G54S or the linksys wrt54gl? They are essentially the same price. I plan to load ddwrt on the router. So I guess hardware-wise difference?

The price went up. Now $62.99 - 10 rebate - 10 coupon (which I found in the SD forum). $42.99 shipped is still a great deal.

In for 1.

Anyone have an opinion?

Does it still support AOSS with the alternate firmware?

No, but you can use the button for other features.

Any reason to use the alternate firmware over the stock? Better performance or anything?

According to the dd-wrt wiki, the buffalo has twice the ram and a faster processor.

Better performance with heavy network loads such as bittorret, other p2p apps. You also get a lot more features like QOS, the ability to run a wifi hotspot, logging, advanced networking features. Basically you are running linux on it so the possibilities are endless. Not for the networking noob though, you should feel confident in how networks work if you're gonna jump in. For me the QOS is the killer app, I can download p2p stuff fast while still being able to browse the web and use VOIP.

Any of these DD-WRT type products have gigabit switch?

My old linksys is in need of replacement...befsr41...does this software make
it faster on the dhcp list and stuff...my old one can't/won't update the listing for 20-60 minutes when a computer connects or shuts down.

I have to get one of these if I can ...the buffalo sure looks good and cheap.

Not if you don't want to be able to run the equivalent of a $500-600 product for the price of $50.

Biggest thing I'm looking forward to is the QOS. Full speed torrents + 0-lag gaming at the same time, can't wait.

Forgot to say: If you get one of these, flash dd-wrt and like it, consider paypaling a few bucks to the guy that writes dd-wrt (brainslayer). There is a donate link on the homepage dd-wrt.com
He writes this all for free, the more money donated the more time he can spend making it even more kickass. As soccerballtux points out, your getting $500 of functionality for $40, consider sending $10 to help make it even better. I know in the hot deals section we're a bunch of cheapskates but this is for a good cause.

Ordered the Buffalo, and set it up today following Kaido's instruction set. Going to order a second for use as a client bridge in another room.

I haven't seen one yet, all of the cheap DD-WRT compatible routers I've seen are based on the same basic Broadcom reference design hardware with a 10/100 4-port switch integrated. I just hung an 8 port netgear gig-e switch off one of the router's LAN ports to service my wired clients and called it good.

I have one of these with DD-WRT v23sp2. As long as you only have up to about 50 concurrent connections you are fine. But when I play Battlefield 2142 on it, the router crashes at server refresh.

After I was sick of all the bad performance I tried to downgrade it to v21, and bricked it.

As a router, it has very crappy hardware. It won't do DD-WRT justice. I brought the Dlink 4300 later on and am very happy with that.
