I'm trying to find a way to lower the power consumption and heat dissipation of my two lcd monitors. I'm guessing that lowering the backlighting and reducing the refresh rate would be a step in the right direction. Does anyone know of anything else? My room will be sweltering in a few short weeks, and at the moment my monitors are giving off more heat than what I have inside my computer's case.
 
Lowering brightness will lessen the heat output. That is about the only thing that will make a difference. Everything else, resolution, refresh rate really doesn't effect heat output much.
 
Lowering the refresh rate will not only fail to lower your heat , it will also give you one hell of a headache from looking at it.
 
I don't find enough heat emanating from an LCD (41 inches and smaller) to be of concern. That is one of the beauties of LCDs compared to CRTs. Much less heat.

If you really want to lower power consumption, use one monitor instead of two. 🙂
 
I often find myself turning off the 19" lcd to use the 23" lcd. If I don't need widescreen, I'll do the reverse. I had found an interesting program that uses google maps and some weather webpage to figure out in real time how much ambient light there is outside; and it adjusts the brightness of your monitor to match. I'll have to try and re-find it. It was in the middle of my quest to find a ddc controlling program for multi-monitor setups, x64, and vista. Not a good combination for finding a program to replace osd for controlling my monitors.
 
What kind of LCD monitor do you have that heats up?

I have a little Dell 18.5" widescreen and does net even get luke warm. It feels cold to me. Maybe we need a heat guideline when buying LCD monitors.

I find it odd that you can hardly find a non-Widescreen monitor any more.
 
piasabird, I have two acer lcd monitors; a 23" widescreen, and a 19" full screen. It's not that the viewable part of the monitor is hot, but there is quite a bit of heat rising from the vents in the rear of the monitor.
