I have an XP laptop that I am thinking of using this in. High speed is not my concern - I'm looking for shock resistance since I worry about a laptop hard drive failing terribly if I ever dropped the laptop.

Is this a good drive a good choice? Anything else in this price range with 80g+ worth looking at?

No idea about shock resistance, but one of the reviews that I posted said this drive's minimal power consumption was great for laptop users.

I have the 64GB non + version and I will say, if you are looking for "speed" this isnt for you. While I've read that the + version is a tad faster its not by much and, writes are much lower than advertised under most conditions. It's sequencial reads are pretty good, but other than that, it is rather underwhelming.

**It's possible this is a newer generation, as their tests are faster than the ones I was looking at the other day**

since SSD's don't have any moving part, their shock resistance is at least as good, if not much better, than regular HD's.

It's much better than any regular hard drive. Here is Intel's spec sheets for shock:

Shock (operating and non-operating)
— 1,500 G/0.5 msec

The V+100 has the Toshiba controller and in Anand's review, he stated the controller has very aggressive garbage collecting. That keeps the drive performance at it's peak but it comes at a cost...more wear on the nand and higher power draw.

If one doesn't mind that, the price is very good.

SSD's are finally getting down to a reasonable price per Mb. Seems to still be in free fall though. I bet in a year or two they will be a quarter of the price per Mb that they are now.

Good luck with your kingston v100 ssd Impulse69. Mine died and couldn't be recognized by bios after a few months. There are a bunch of similar reports on newegg. Kingston says the firmware is to blame, and recommends you upgrade it. reviews and kingston's responses in the links

The pattern is
Customer: BRICK BRICK BRICK BRICK BRICK BRICK
Kingston: FIRMWRAARH

the v+100 uses a different controller, doesn't have the same issue. you might be better off with it

So this 96g drive we are discussing from OP is NOT subject to this problem, correct?

I installed this in my wife's laptop. She only has a T2350 and this was a great upgrade. Should double the life of her lappy *knock on wood*, while spending half of a new one (also new battery).
