INSTALLATION OVERVIEW
The PC Card standard defines the physical socket dimensions and pin-outs for the PC Card connectors. There are three types of PC Card slots: Type I, Type II, and Type III. Each card type varies in thickness.
Most portable computers provide a stacked configuration consisting of two PC Card Type II slots. Because Type II and Type III cards have the same connector pin-out, but different thickness, a stacked configuration allows either two Type II cards or one Type III card to be installed.
HANDLING AND CARE
The DataPak Drive contains several delicate moving parts, such as the rotating disk and read/write mechanism. To ensure the safety of your data, take care when handling or transporting the DataPak Drive. When the DataPak Drive is not inserted into a PC Card slot, keep it in its protective carrying case to protect it from inadvertent shocks.
When going from one temperature extreme to another, allow the DataPak Drive a few minutes to adjust to the surrounding temperature before operating it. Additionally, the DataPak relies on a contamination-free environment to function properly and reliably.
INSERTING THE DATAPAK DRIVE
To install the DataPak Drive, locate the Type II PC Card slot on your portable computer. Insert the DataPak Drive into the PC Card slot. Slide the drive along the guide rails until it is firmly plugged into the slot inside the computer. It will slide in freely until the drive reaches the slot, where it will encounter some slight resistance as the connection is made. Insert the drive slightly beyond this resistance point to ensure that it is fully seated into the slot. Do not force the card. If it does not feel as though the card is seating properly, remove the card and examine the connector at the back of the slot to see if the pins are bent or otherwise obstructing the card.
WINDOWS 95/98 & NT
The DataPak Drive is accessed like any other hard drive. The PC Card driver configures the computer to recognize the PC Card slot, and the operating system assigns a drive designation. The drive designation is typically D: In some cases it is E, F, G, H, or I. Check your computer system manual for the specified drive letter(s) available for PC Card slots. Once the drive is accessed, it can be used to store data or run software applications.
Windows 98 and 95 both support hot swapping. Windows NT can support hot swapping with the addition of a third party software package such as CardWizard for Windows NT 4.0 from System Soft. Hot swapping allows the PC Card to be inserted or removed while the computer is running. Before removing a PC Card it is recommended that you go into Control Panel > PC Card, highlight the card being removed, and click on the stop button.
MACINTOSH
The DataPak Drive can operate under DOS format when the PC Exchange mode is set to ON, or be configured as a Mac OS formatted disk drive. As a DOS-formatted PC Card, your DataPak can share files between Mac and PC computers. The DataPak is pre-configured as a DOS formatted drive. No additional formatting is necessary to use the DataPak as a DOS-formatted drive.
If you plan to use your DataPak on Macintosh systems ONLY, you may reformat the drive under Mac OS. In doing this, you will NOT be able to share files with PC computers.
From the Special menu, select Erase Disk.
Type in a desired name for the drive and select Erase.
