Hot? JVC Progressive Scan DVD 149.99 at Best Buy

I found this one yesterday while hunting around at Best Buy. Its the JVC XV-S65GD progressive scan dvd player for $149.99. (its not the one in this weeks flyer but very similar and cheaper too). It plays mp3, dvd, vcd, svcd and xsvcd. I hooked it up this morning to my DVDO Iscan and HDTV and it looks fantastic, although I haven't tried the internal progressive scan system. The picture is much better than the comparably priced rca dvd player (i haven't seen any pixelation). Mp3's play great, except no fast forward nor rewind (just like the other brands). The vcdhelp.com site has very positive posts for this player and the different playback formats. I haven't tried vcd nor svcd yet, but I will. I think its a great price for a progressive scan player that plays just about every format known to man.

I haven't checked out vcdhelp.com yet, but if it gets great reviews on there it's a safe bet it will read "burned" VCDs. I bet it is way less picky than my ancient Toshiba, the darn thing only reads VCDs burned on CD-RW discs.

Gotta check this one out, time for a new DVD player and this sounds good to me.

I have the XV-F85GD player... I think it's the same internals as all the GD players, exept mine has a 7 disc changer. It plays everything I throw at it except for divx. SVCD, XVCD, VCD, DVD all play with great quality. It plays burned vcd/svcd's as well. This is one of the best players I've ever seen. I just wish the companies would say SVCD compliant. Just got a Toshiba player for my sis, and it won't play svcd's, so have to convert them to xvcd... not difficult, just a pain 🙂

All the GD stands for is the color of the unit - Gold. If it ends in BK then it is Black. So, all GD players are definitely NOT the same.

It should play burned vcd's ok. vcdhelp.com has it listed as playing vcd's, svcd's and xsvcd's although i haven't tried it myself.

Another good choice at this price point is the apex 800 available at sams club for $129. Its very comparable to the jvc and will play anything except for DVDA disks. cd-r's, rw's, vcds, hdcd, etc.

For more money, the panasonic rp56 is a better progressive scan dvd player than the apex, but not as flexible in what it will play. It can be had for around $229. The biggest advantage this player has over the jvc and apex is its ability to handle almost any "difficult" dvd situation from decoding issues to scratches.
